Most often, images below the fold are missing because the page loads them only when they approach the visible area or when scrolling triggers site code. A full-page screenshot may capture the whole document without actually scrolling through it. Scroll the page in stages, wait for the images to load, and then capture. If images are missing from an ordinary viewport screenshot too, investigate the image requests and page errors instead.
Why a full-page capture can miss images
“Full page” describes how much of the document is included in the image; it does not necessarily mean the browser scrolled through every section first. Playwright describes its full-page screenshot as capturing the scrollable page “as if you had a very tall screen and the page could fit it entirely.” That capture area alone may not trigger behavior tied to actual scrolling. Pages commonly defer off-screen images. Native lazy loading can postpone a request until an image is near the viewport, while site scripts may use scrolling or viewport-intersection callbacks to load images or other content. A screenshot can therefore include the space where an image belongs even though that image was never loaded.
A Playwright issue opened May 21, 2026 discusses this distinction, noting that from the page JavaScript’s perspective, “nothing scrolls.” That observation concerns the issue described; it is not a rule that every browser or screenshot tool behaves identically.

First check whether the problem is limited to full-page captures
Images are missing only below the fold
Lazy loading or scroll-triggered behavior is the leading explanation. Manually scroll down the page in stages and pause where images should appear. If they show up after you scroll, the page likely needs those triggers before capture. For an automated capture, reproduce the scrolling and wait for image completion or a specific page condition rather than relying on a single arbitrary delay.
Images are missing in a normal viewport screenshot too
Treat this as a page-loading problem, not a full-page capture problem. In Chrome DevTools, open the Network panel, enable its Screenshots feature, and reload to compare the visible page with network activity. Check whether the image request was made and whether it completed, and confirm that the page supplied an image source. A screenshot cannot include an image the page has not successfully rendered. Fix it in a scripted capture
For a page that loads content as it scrolls, visit the relevant sections before taking the final full-page screenshot. The following Playwright example scrolls down in viewport-sized increments, waits for images that have been requested to finish, and then captures the page. Install Playwright and its browser first; save this as capture.mjs and run it with node capture.mjs https://example.com.

Some pages add content indefinitely, require a particular interaction, or load images from CSS backgrounds rather than <img> elements. The loop allows the document height to settle across repeated passes; if the site has a known loading indicator or image selector, waiting for that specific condition is usually more reliable. Fix it if you own the website
Do not lazy-load images expected in the initial viewport, especially the main first-screen image. Google’s guidance recommends allowing above-the-fold images to load normally and using lazy loading for images lower on the page. web.dev: Browser-level image lazy loading
For custom lazy-loading code, verify that the trigger fires, the image source is set, and the image loads in the browsers and capture workflow that matter to your users. If your site relies on intersection events, test with actual scrolling rather than assuming an expanded screenshot area will trigger them.

Try a browser-native full-page capture
Firefox Developer Tools offers a full-page screenshot option. Enable the “Take a screenshot of the entire page” toolbox button, then use the screenshot tool to capture the page. Mozilla documents the workflow in Taking screenshots. Trying another browser can help isolate a capture-tool difference, but it does not guarantee that scroll-dependent content has been activated.
