The right fix depends on where the problem appears: a still GIF, a missing #images option in Messages, and a GIF that will not load in Safari are different issues.
GIFs are visible but not moving in Messages or Safari
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Motion.
- Turn on Auto-Play Animated Images.
- Return to Messages or Safari and check the GIF again.
Apple says this setting controls whether animated images such as GIFs play automatically in Messages and Safari. It is separate from Auto-Play Message Effects, which controls full-screen message effects rather than GIF images. Apple’s iPhone guide to motion settings.

#images is missing from Messages
Check the keyboard language and region at Settings > General > Language & Region. Apple recommends checking these settings when #images is unavailable. Its listed supported countries and regions are the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, India, Singapore, the Philippines, and Japan. Apple’s #images availability guidance.
This is a documented first check, not a guarantee that changing the region will resolve every case. Apple’s availability list does not establish that every configuration or network problem is fixed by changing language or region.

A #images GIF moves in Messages but not elsewhere
That behavior can be expected. Apple states that “GIFs from #images animate only in the Messages app on Apple devices.” A GIF from this collection appearing still outside that context does not, by itself, show that your iPhone is faulty. GIFs or other content are not loading in Safari
If Safari pages or their content fail to load, Apple recommends these general website-loading checks. They are not a GIF-specific diagnosis:

- Try a different network.
- Check your VPN settings.
- Restart your iPhone.
- Clear Safari website data.
- Confirm that JavaScript is enabled.
- If only one website is affected, check whether Private Relay is on. If the issue continues, contact the website developer.

Send or save a GIF using Apple’s built-in options
Send a GIF from #images
- Open a conversation in Messages and tap Add.
- Choose #images, search for a GIF, and select it.
- Send the GIF in the conversation.
Save a GIF received in a message
- Touch and hold the GIF in the message.
- Tap Save. Apple says the GIF is saved to Photos.
