Why Are Fonts Missing in Headless Chrome Website Screenshots?

Missing fonts in headless Chrome screenshots usually trace to early capture, failed web-font requests, or absent system-font and glyph coverage. Diagnose each cause separately.

Fonts usually appear missing in a headless Chrome screenshot for one of three reasons: the capture happens before web fonts finish loading, a font request fails, or the browser’s Linux/container environment lacks the required font or glyphs. Headless mode by itself does not mean Chrome cannot render web fonts. Check timing, network delivery, and installed font coverage separately.

1. Check whether the screenshot was taken before fonts loaded

A page’s load event does not guarantee that every external font has loaded successfully or that the intended face is visible in the screenshot. Chrome’s headless command-line documentation says it captures the page as soon as it is loaded by default if neither --timeout nor --virtual-time-budget is supplied. Google Fonts also documents that Chrome may render the rest of a page while leaving blank space where text using a pending web font belongs (Google Fonts technical considerations).

With Puppeteer, wait for the document’s fonts

Wait for the page’s font set before capturing, then inspect the font requests to confirm they actually succeeded. Readiness alone is not proof that the intended font downloaded.

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });

This assumes page is a Puppeteer page and url is the target page URL. Use the same URL and viewport as the failing job when comparing results.

With Chrome’s command line, use a bounded wait

If using headless command-line capture, set a timeout or virtual-time budget when the page needs time beyond initial load. These options can address timing, but they cannot repair a failed font request or install a missing local font. See Chrome for Developers’ New Headless documentation for the capture options.

2. Check whether the font request failed

Open the browser’s network log and console for the same run. Filter network requests for font resources, then check whether each expected font URL was requested and returned successfully. If a request failed, verify the URL, response, cross-origin configuration, and whether the runner can reach the font host. For self-hosted fonts, confirm the deployed file exists and the CSS points to it.

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • A CSS font-family declaration only identifies a requested family; it does not show that the browser loaded or used it.
  • Check computed styles and the actual rendered result in the target browser session.
  • Compare a screenshot taken after fonts are confirmed ready with the failing screenshot.

3. Check installed fonts and glyph coverage

Pages may request local/system fonts, and text may contain characters the installed fonts do not cover. This commonly affects slim Linux and container images. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide lists Debian dependencies including fonts-liberation and provides Docker examples with additional font packages; it notes that Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text may need extra font files (Puppeteer troubleshooting).

Choose packages for the needed family and scripts

Install font packages that provide the family and character coverage the page needs, then refresh the font cache if the target distribution requires it. Package names and cache commands vary by distribution, so do not copy a Debian package list blindly into another Linux image.

  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
  • If all text uses a fallback face, check whether the requested font family is installed or whether its web-font download failed.
  • If only particular characters or scripts are absent, check glyph coverage and install a font containing those characters.

4. Verify which headless browser is running

Record the browser version, automation-library version, executable path, and runtime image when reproducing the failure. Confirm whether the runner launches Chrome, a Chrome for Testing executable, or chrome-headless-shell. Chromium’s headless documentation says the old headless functionality stopped being part of the Chrome binary as of M132 and directs users of that mode to chrome-headless-shell (Chromium Headless Chromium documentation). That packaging change is a reason to verify the executable, not evidence that headless Chrome universally drops fonts.

5. Troubleshoot in a repeatable order

  1. Reproduce with the same URL, viewport, locale, runtime image, and browser executable as the failing job.
  2. Wait for the document font set to settle, or use a bounded command-line timeout or virtual-time budget.
  3. Inspect font requests and console errors in that browser session; confirm that expected files succeeded.
  4. Check the rendered/computed font and whether the problem affects all text or only particular scripts and glyphs.
  5. If the page relies on local fonts, install packages for the target family and glyph coverage in the Linux image, and refresh its font cache as required.
  6. Keep browser and automation versions pinned while diagnosing, then compare screenshots before and after the specific change.

6. Avoid common fixes that mask the cause

  • Adding a long sleep: it can make a timing race appear to go away, but it will not fix an unreachable or missing font file and can make CI timing flaky. Wait for font readiness and verify network success instead.
  • Assuming headless mode is the cause: headless Chromium is intended to run in server environments; the mode alone does not establish why a font is missing.
  • Assuming CSS proves the font rendered: the browser may have fallen back after a request error or because the local system font is unavailable.
  • Installing a generic font package for missing characters: a package helps only if it supplies the family or glyphs the page needs; check script coverage.
