Hyprland is the Wayland compositor; it does not by itself install every font family or glyph. The title’s “missing piece” may be a font, but the right diagnosis depends on the symptom and the affected application.
Is it a missing glyph, a fallback font, or blurry text?
These symptoms can look related but point to different causes:

- Missing characters: the requested font may not contain the needed glyphs, or no available fallback may provide them.
- An unexpected typeface: the requested family may be unavailable, so an application selects another face based on its configuration and available glyph coverage.
- Fuzzy or distorted text: this may be a display-scaling or DPI issue rather than a missing font.
Fontconfig helps Fontconfig-aware applications discover available fonts and configure rendering. As ArchWiki puts it, “Fontconfig is a library designed to provide a list of available fonts to applications, as well as configuration for how fonts get rendered.” Hyprland’s role as compositor is separate from that font discovery. Check what Fontconfig sees and selects
Start with these commands in a terminal:
fc-listlists fonts recognized by Fontconfig. Look for the family you expected to use.fc-match "Family Name"shows which face Fontconfig selects for a family request. ReplaceFamily Namewith the family you want to check.
A successful match does not prove that the selected face covers every character in your text. For a language-specific check or a particular Unicode character, ArchWiki’s font guidance documents language-filtered font listings and charset-based matching. Choose where to get and install the font
If the intended family or glyph coverage is absent, use a font that meets your design and character requirements. There is no single best family for every language or application.

For fonts outside the repositories, ArchWiki describes creating packages as an option. If you install font files manually, do not put them in /usr/share/fonts/, which is managed by the package manager. Fontconfig scans standard font locations recursively; its directory guidance is in ArchWiki’s Font configuration article.

Refresh discovery, then check the affected application
Fontconfig-aware software often notices font changes automatically. If the new font does not appear, run fc-cache; then restart the affected application if necessary. A cache rebuild is not required after every installation.
If the problem remains, compare the result of fc-match with the font and characters the application actually renders. Application font handling can differ, and not every application uses Fontconfig in the same way. If the text is consistently fuzzy rather than missing or replaced, investigate display scaling and DPI instead of assuming a font is absent.
