Apps ask for location when a feature depends on where you are—such as directions, nearby places, local updates, or an alert triggered by entering an area. But a permission prompt does not prove that location is essential to every part of the app. Check which feature needs it and whether the requested precision and access period make sense.
What location access lets an app do
A phone estimates its location using signals such as GPS, nearby Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth, and mobile networks. An app with permission can use that estimate to power location-dependent features; the exact signals and results vary by device and conditions. Apple explains how Location Services works.

- Show where you are: A map can mark your current position or use it to help provide directions.
- Find nearby places: A shop or service app can list branches near you.
- Show local information: An app may surface regional news, events, weather, or nearby listings.
- Attach a place to content: Location can add a place to a photo or post.
- Trigger an alert at a place: A geofence can prompt an action when you enter or leave an area.
These are common functional reasons, not a diagnosis of any particular app. Whether a feature truly needs location depends on what it does.

Location access is not all-or-nothing. Platforms distinguish a broader, approximate area from a more precise position. The right level depends on the task: a regional forecast or list of nearby branches may work with an approximate location, while walking directions may benefit from a precise one. Google Play’s location guidance gives examples of features that can use coarse location and explains the distinction from precise location.

If the app offers a choice, grant the least precise level that still serves the feature. If the result is too broad or a location-dependent function does not work, you can reconsider the setting.
Why does an app want access in the background?
Foreground access applies while an app is open and visible. Background access allows location use when it is not visible. That can make sense for a feature that must react to your arrival or departure from an area, such as a location-triggered reminder. It is harder to justify for a feature that only displays information while you are actively using the app.

Android guidance says most use cases need location only while someone is engaging with the app. Its guidance for background access says the feature should be important to core functionality, provide significant user benefit, be disclosed, and be apparent to the user. Those are platform standards, not evidence that every app follows them. See Android’s location-permission guidance and Google Play’s location policy guidance.
How to judge a location prompt
- Identify the feature. Look for an explanation naming what location enables, such as finding nearby branches or providing directions. On iPhone, Apple’s prompt identifies the app and the developer’s stated reason. For background access, Google Play guidance calls for a clear disclosure of the feature that uses it.
- Match precision to the task. Ask whether an approximate area would be enough or whether the feature needs a precise position. A broad local list and walking directions have different needs.
- Match duration to the task. Access while the app is in use may fit a map or nearby search. Background access calls for a clear reason tied to a feature that must work when the app is not visible.
- Consider whether the request is expected. Location access is easier to understand in a map or store-finder than in a feature whose purpose has no obvious geographic connection. If the app does not explain the connection, you can deny access and see whether other functions still work, or ask the developer.
Android’s guidance emphasizes requesting the minimum scope needed and considering what users would reasonably expect. A permission prompt is a gate that lets the platform mediate access; it is not, by itself, proof that the request is necessary or that the app is misusing location.

What permission does—and does not—tell you
Granting permission allows an app to access location through the platform at the scope you approved. The prompt does not give a complete account of how the app handles resulting data, including retention, sharing, or processing by third parties. Apple advises users to consider an app’s terms and privacy practices as well as its Location Services permission. Review the app’s privacy information if you want to understand its data handling.
A 2017 paper hosted by the Federal Trade Commission discussed how third-party libraries embedded in apps could access location through the app and why users might have difficulty distinguishing a library’s use from the app’s core function. It is historical evidence of a transparency concern, not proof about any particular app today: FTC-hosted paper on location permissions and third-party libraries.

How to change location access on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Select the app you want to review.
- Choose the available access option that fits how you use its location feature. If available, you can also adjust whether it may use precise location.
You can change your decision later. Turning Location Services off prevents apps from using location through that service, which can limit features that rely on it. See Apple’s instructions for Location Services.

Android controls depend on your device
Android permission labels and settings paths can differ by operating-system version and device. Look for the app’s location permission in your device settings and, where offered, choose the least precise access and shortest duration that still supports the feature you want. Android’s developer guidance describes the permission model, but the setting path on your phone may vary: Android location permissions.

If you deny access
Denying or reducing access may disable or narrow the location-dependent feature, but it does not necessarily prevent the rest of the app from working. For example, a map may no longer center on your position, while other app functions remain available. The outcome depends on the app and feature; if you are unsure, try the app without location and assess what stops working.
