App updates can fix security weaknesses, repair bugs, improve compatibility, and add or refine privacy controls. They do not all do the same job, and an update is not a guarantee that every device will run faster. Keep apps and device software current, install important security updates promptly, and check whether your device still receives security support.
What app updates can change
An update may be a security patch, a bug-fix or quality release, a feature update, or a combination. A small app update is different from a major operating-system release, so its effects depend on what changed and whether the app and device support it.

- Security: A patch can close a known vulnerability. The FTC advises installing software updates regularly and promptly because attackers may exploit weaknesses before they are fixed. - Privacy: Security fixes can help protect personal information, while some system updates support permission management and choices about what data apps receive. Updating does not replace reviewing each app’s permissions and privacy settings.
- Reliability and performance: Bug fixes can address crashes, freezes, and malfunctioning features; updates may also optimize performance. These are potential benefits, not a promise that every release will make every phone faster. Android’s explanation of updates
- Compatibility: Updates can help apps and devices work with newer software and services. Conversely, a new release may not support every older device or app equally.
App updates are only one part of keeping a device current
Phones may receive updates through an app store, from the device manufacturer or carrier as operating-system updates, and through separate system services. Updating apps does not necessarily update the operating system or those services. For Android, Google’s general path for device software is Settings > System > Software update. Names and locations can vary by manufacturer and model. How to keep apps and device software updated
- Enable automatic updates where available. The FTC recommends automatic updates when that option is offered. Check the app store’s update settings and your device’s system-update settings; the controls are separate.
- Install security updates promptly. Do not leave security-update reminders unattended. Read the update notice or release notes if you need to understand what is changing.
- Restart when the device requires it. Some updates do not finish installing until the phone restarts. Follow the device’s instructions.
- Check support for your exact model. Look up the manufacturer’s published security-support period and end date for that model. Update frequency and support periods vary, and an app update cannot provide operating-system patches to a device that no longer receives them. What to consider before installing an update
Most users should keep updates enabled, but the details of a release can matter. Consider these factors when an update notice or a known issue raises a question:
- Security urgency: Does the release fix security issues? Give security fixes priority rather than postponing them indefinitely.
- Device and app compatibility: Check whether the release supports your model and whether essential apps have compatibility information.
- Installation needs: Follow any instructions about restarting, available storage, or other requirements shown by the device or app.
- Rollout status: Some updates are released in stages. FTC staff has discussed staged rollouts as a way to reduce the risk of widespread failures; a gradual rollout is not, by itself, a reason to disable updates. FTC staff discussion of staged rollouts
- Problems after installation: If an update causes trouble, consult the app developer’s or device maker’s official support guidance and the release notes. One problematic release does not mean updates as a whole should be switched off.
Why staying current has limits
No update schedule applies universally across apps, manufacturers, models, or carriers. Support duration and update frequency differ, and a device that has passed its security-support end date cannot be made fully current simply by updating its apps. The FTC’s 2018 mobile-update findings describe variation in support and deployment practices, not a current consumer-level estimate of how much updating reduces risk or improves performance.
