If an Android browser starts crashing, freezing, or failing to load pages after an update, the timing alone does not prove the update caused it. First identify what is failing: the browser, a particular website, your connection, or a web page displayed inside another app. Then work through reversible checks before changing app data or removing updates.
First, identify what “broken” means
Different symptoms point to different places to investigate. Note whether the browser exits or will not start, opens but cannot load a page, fails on one site or many, or whether only links inside a particular app are affected. If you need support, record the browser name, device model, Android version, and update involved.

Try safe, reversible steps first
For symptoms such as “Chrome keeps crashing” or “Chrome won’t open,” Google recommends freeing memory, reloading, reopening Chrome, and restarting the device. These steps do not establish the cause, but they are a sensible first check.
- Close extra browser tabs and other apps that are not in use.
- Pause downloads, then reload the problem tab.
- Close and reopen Chrome.
- Restart your Android phone or tablet and try again.

Compare the browser, page, and connection
Open the same page in a different browser. If it works there, the issue may be specific to the affected browser or its profile. If it fails there too, the site or network is a more useful place to investigate.
- Only one site fails: Try other sites in the same browser. If those load, contact the site owner if the problem persists.
- The page works in another browser: Focus on the affected browser. Google describes reinstalling Chrome as a later option; be cautious with any step that deletes browsing data, because local data may be removed.
- Pages fail in multiple browsers: Check your connection. If network trouble seems likely, Google recommends restarting the modem and router, then contacting the site owner if the problem continues.
If links fail inside another app, consider WebView
A page displayed within an app may not be using the full browser. Android’s WebView documentation describes WebView as a component that lets an app show web content as part of its own screen; unlike a fully developed browser, it does not provide features such as an address bar or navigation controls.

If a page fails inside one app but the same site works in a standalone browser, the host app or its embedded web content is a reasonable diagnostic lead. That pattern does not, by itself, prove WebView is the cause.

A WebView-related app-crash incident is documented, but it was specific to March 2021. In a notice dated March 23, Google said reports had begun the day before and that its investigation linked the issue to a recent Android System WebView update. Google said it had halted that update and posted a new version, and advised users to update Android System WebView and Google Chrome. The notice also said that some devices did not have WebView preinstalled and only needed Chrome updated. It identified the fix as version 89.0.4389.105; that is the historical incident build, not a current version recommendation. Read Google’s March 2021 incident notice in that dated context.

Samsung’s article, updated June 22, 2021, also connected reports of app crashes to a recent WebView update and recommended updating Chrome and Android System WebView, then restarting. Its directions are Galaxy-oriented and may not apply to another manufacturer or newer software. If app updates are stuck or WebView appears disabled, use current instructions for your device rather than treating older, device-specific directions as universal. Use the official app store and current device guidance to check for available updates. Do not begin by manually uninstalling WebView updates: Google warned in its 2021 incident notice that doing so could result in loss of data from some apps. That warning concerns the documented incident; it is not a reason to assume an update is causing a present-day problem.

When the problem persists
Keep track of whether the failure affects one site, every site in one browser, multiple browsers, or pages inside another app. That distinction helps support teams narrow down what is failing.
