If an MKV video plays on Android but has no sound, the most likely issue is not the .mkv extension itself: MKV is a container, and the audio inside may be unsupported, on a different track, or sent to the wrong output. Check the phone’s audio route, the file’s audio tracks, and the player’s settings before converting the file.
Why an MKV can have video but no sound
MKV, or Matroska, is a container: it can hold video, one or more audio tracks, subtitles, and other data. The filename extension does not tell you which audio codec the file uses or whether your Android device’s built-in player can decode it. Android’s supported-format guidance describes platform support, but playback can also vary with Android version, device implementation, and the app being used. Video and audio are separate streams. A player may decode the video while failing to decode the audio, or it may be playing a track that is silent or in a language you do not expect. A sound-output setting or route can also leave an otherwise playable track inaudible.

Try these checks first
- Check the output. Raise the phone’s media volume, make sure the player is not muted, temporarily disconnect Bluetooth, and check whether another app produces sound. This helps distinguish a file or player issue from a phone-output issue.
- Try each audio track. Open the player’s audio or track menu and select another available track. Some MKV files contain multiple tracks, and some players let you switch between them. If no audio stream is present in the file, settings cannot restore one.
- Identify the audio codec. Open the player’s media or stream information if available, or inspect the file with a reputable media-information utility. Note the codec and compare it with the Android supported-format guidance for your Android generation.
- Test another player. VLC for Android is a useful compatibility check because VideoLAN describes broad-format playback and support for selecting multiple audio tracks. It is not a guarantee that every codec, file, or device combination will work. VLC for Android project · VLC for Android features.
- Check audio-output settings. If the track is present but remains silent, compare the player’s audio settings and test ordinary device output. Choose the next step based on what you find

If the device and player still cannot decode it, consider converting the audio to a compatible codec or remuxing only if the issue is the container. There is no universal winner between a built-in player and VLC: compare support for the file’s actual audio codec, track-selection controls, audio-output options, and behavior on your Android version and device.

When converting the file makes sense
Conversion is a later step, not the first diagnostic. Use it when you have identified an audio codec that the player or device cannot play and a compatible player is not a workable option. A conversion or remuxing tool must preserve or change the relevant stream appropriately; simply renaming the file or changing its container does not guarantee sound. The available Android and VideoLAN documentation does not establish a conversion recipe that will fix every MKV.
