An electromagnetic brake overheats when its electrical, mechanical, or thermal demands exceed the limits of that specific brake. Common causes include incorrect coil voltage or a faulty rectifier, excessive switching or braking load, a misadjusted air gap, mechanical drag, and blocked cooling. Identify the model and compare measurements and operating conditions with its manufacturer’s specifications before changing settings or replacing parts.
Why an electromagnetic brake gets too hot
Heat is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The permissible braking load depends on the brake’s torque, speed, and switching capacity; exceeding those design limits calls for manufacturer guidance, according to Siemens’ SIMOTICS M-1PH8 operating instructions. The relevant limits vary by model, so a voltage, duty-cycle percentage, temperature, or air-gap value that applies to one brake should not be treated as universal.

Incorrect electrical excitation or a circuit fault
Excessive coil excitation or voltage can damage a coil. Conversely, low coil voltage, defective wiring, or a faulty rectifier can keep the brake from operating as intended. Check the actual brake’s rated coil voltage and control arrangement, and compare measurements with its instructions—not with a generic value. Troubleshooting guidance from Warner Electric and INTORQ includes electrical checks such as coil voltage and resistance.

Frequent starts and stops, high braking energy, or sustained slip can create more heat than the brake can dissipate. Check the application’s operating history against the unit’s switching-frequency, duty, and thermal limits. Siemens’ instructions say: “If any of these data are exceeded consult the manufacturer.”

Air-gap, wear, or mechanical problems
An air gap outside the specified range can interfere with magnetic operation. In friction assemblies, a gap that is too small can also allow surfaces to rub continuously. Wear, contamination, misalignment, obstruction, or dragging parts may add friction and heat. Inspect and adjust only by the procedure for the exact model.
Insufficient cooling
Blocked or inadequate cooling airflow can contribute to overheating. Check that cooling paths are clear and that the brake is installed and operated under the maker’s stated cooling and ambient conditions. A hot housing by itself does not establish a fault: interpret temperature only against the manufacturer’s specified limit and measurement location, if provided.

How to diagnose the cause safely
- Identify the brake. Record its manufacturer and model, then obtain the current manual. Note the rated coil voltage and control or rectifier arrangement, switching frequency, duty and load limits, specified air gap, and any service-temperature limits.
- Check the electrical circuit. With appropriate isolation and qualified personnel, inspect wiring, terminals, and rectifier or control hardware. Measure voltage at the coil under the condition specified by the manufacturer; check resistance if the manual calls for it. Compare results with that model’s specifications.
- Inspect the mechanical assembly. Look for wear, contamination, misalignment, obstruction, or friction surfaces that drag. Measure and adjust the air gap only using the model-specific instructions.
- Review how the brake is used. Examine starts and stops, braking energy, load, slip, and ambient conditions. Determine whether the application exceeds the brake’s permitted duty or thermal capacity.
- Correct the identified cause and reassess. Restore airflow if cooling paths are blocked, or address the electrical, mechanical, or application issue identified. If measurements are outside specification, the coil is damaged, or overheating persists, stop relying on continued operation as a fix and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
What to use for checks—and when to get service
A digital multimeter can help check coil voltage or resistance when the manufacturer’s troubleshooting procedure calls for those measurements. A feeler-gauge set may be appropriate for checking the air gap if the model’s manual specifies it. Neither tool replaces qualified electrical work or the correct service procedure.
Do not keep replacing a coil without resolving the reason it failed. Manufacturer guidance may direct repair or replacement of the brake or stator for particular electrical faults; confirm the prescribed remedy and exact part compatibility with the brake maker or a qualified industrial service provider. If the brake’s operating limits are unclear, ask the manufacturer to assess the application before returning it to service.
