An app can still say “connected” after internet access fails because the label may reflect an earlier check—or merely the presence of a network path, not a successful connection to the app’s own service. Wi-Fi or cellular availability, general internet access, and a working app request are separate things.
What “connected” can mean
The word can describe several different conditions, and an app’s indicator may not distinguish between them:

- A network is present: the device is associated with Wi-Fi or has a cellular network available.
- General internet access appears available: the operating system has evidence that the network can reach the public internet.
- The app’s service responds: the app can reach its endpoint and complete the request it needs.
These layers do not guarantee one another. A device can remain connected to a Wi-Fi network while a captive portal blocks normal access, for example. And even when general internet access works, a particular app’s hostname, endpoint, authentication, or service response can fail.

The app is showing an earlier state
An app may update its label after a successful check and keep that value until another check changes it. If the network disappears and the app does not receive or act on a new status, the old “connected” state can remain visible. This is a common explanation, not a diagnosis of any particular app.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
The network exists, but internet access does not
On Android, NET_CAPABILITY_INTERNET means a network is configured for internet access; it does not prove public servers are reachable. Android distinguishes this from NET_CAPABILITY_VALIDATED, which indicates that a system probe found access to the public internet. A captive portal can prevent normal access even when a network is present. Android’s network-state documentation describes these capabilities and their limits.
A system-level check is not a check of the app’s service
Even a validated network is only evidence about general connectivity at the time of the probe. Filtering or a sudden signal loss can interrupt access, and a successful general path does not establish that the app’s own request will work. The service could be unavailable, its hostname might not resolve, or the request could fail for another app-specific reason.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
What Android and Apple report
Both platforms provide ways for apps to observe network conditions, but those signals describe the network path—not guaranteed success for every app operation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Platform | Mechanism | What the signal tells you | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android | ConnectivityManager, NetworkCapabilities, and NetworkCallback |
NET_CAPABILITY_INTERNET indicates a network configured for internet access; NET_CAPABILITY_VALIDATED indicates that a system probe found public internet access. |
Capabilities can change. Even a validated network can encounter filtering or sudden connectivity loss; the signal does not guarantee an app-specific request will succeed. Android Developers |
| Apple platforms | NWPathMonitor, including currentPath and pathUpdateHandler |
Observes the currently available network path and delivers updates when path conditions change. | A path update does not guarantee that a particular backend request will succeed. Apple Developer |
Android says validation is the nearest the system can tell that a network is actually providing access, while noting that filtering or sudden losses can still occur. Apple describes NWPathMonitor as “An observer that you use to monitor and react to network changes.” Neither description makes the system signal equivalent to a successful app request.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What to do if you are using the app
- Try the operation again after a short wait; a fresh request can reveal whether the service is responding.
- Check whether other internet-dependent apps or a web page load. If they also fail, the issue may be broader than this app.
- If only one app fails, close and reopen it, then check the app’s own service-status information or support channel if available.
- For an app that appears stuck, look for a refresh or retry control. A persistent label alone is not proof that the request completed.
How app developers can make the status more accurate
A reliable indicator should update from changing network evidence and from the app’s own requests, rather than staying “connected” indefinitely after one successful check. Android documents inspecting the active network and its capabilities and registering callbacks for changes. Apple’s NWPathMonitor provides path updates. In either case, the app should still handle request failures and update its service status based on the operation the user actually needs.
