Start with the normal uninstall options, then follow the path that matches the control you see. A failed uninstall alone does not prove that an app is malware.
Try uninstalling it from Settings or Google Play
For an app you installed yourself, first try the phone’s app settings or Google Play. Menu labels vary by Android version and device manufacturer, and Google notes that some of its Android uninstall steps apply only to Android 13 and later.

- From Google Play: Open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, choose Manage apps & devices, then Manage. Select the app and tap Uninstall. See Google’s Android uninstall instructions.
- From the phone: Open Settings and look for the app under Apps or Apps & notifications, select it, and check whether Uninstall is available. The exact path depends on the manufacturer.
- From the launcher: Some Android devices let you remove an app by pressing and holding its icon and choosing an uninstall option. The gesture and label differ by device.
If the uninstall option is missing or the app remains, note exactly what the screen says before trying another fix. That message can distinguish an administrative restriction from an app Android does not allow you to remove completely.

“Uninstall” is available
Use that option. If it fails, try the other standard route above. If the app is on a work-managed device or in a work profile, an administrator policy may still control whether it can be removed.

Only “Uninstall updates” appears—or there is no “Uninstall” option
Google’s Android Enterprise guidance says that when “Uninstall” is absent or only “Uninstall updates” appears in the documented managed-app route, the selected app cannot be permanently removed through that route. Removing updates is not the same as deleting the app. Do not assume every preinstalled app can be fully removed; where Android offers a separate disable option, that also differs from uninstalling. A message says an administrator installed or controls it
An employer, school, or other administrator may have installed the app under an administration policy or blocked users from uninstalling apps. Google also documents work-profile policies that can prevent users from uninstalling apps or changing them in Settings. Contact the organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction. See Google’s work-profile policy guidance.

Is it a work-profile app?
Work-profile apps and data are separate from personal apps and data. Removing the work profile removes the work apps and associated work data, not just one troublesome app. An organization may also disallow work-profile removal; if Android blocks the action, ask the administrator what is permitted. Do not remove a profile unless you understand the effect on its work content. See Google’s guidance on removing a work profile.
Could a downloaded app be causing a phone problem?
If the issue is broader than one app—for example, the phone behaves abnormally after you installed something—safe mode can help test whether downloaded apps are involved. Google recommends checking whether the problem goes away in safe mode and, if it does, removing recently downloaded apps one at a time. Restarting into safe mode varies by phone; use your manufacturer’s instructions if the steps on Google’s page do not match your device. Safe mode is a diagnostic step, not a way to override an administrator policy or a guaranteed fix for every uninstall problem. See Google’s safe-mode troubleshooting steps.

What if you suspect malware?
An app refusing to uninstall is not, by itself, proof of malware. But persistent pop-ups, unusual behavior, or other warning signs deserve attention. Google recommends running Google Play Protect, installing available system and security updates, and removing apps you do not trust. Follow Google’s guidance for removing malware or unsafe software from an Android device. If symptoms persist, Google says a device reset or help from the manufacturer may be needed.

Android menus and available controls differ by device and version. If the instructions do not match your phone, consult the manufacturer’s support information; for a managed phone, contact its administrator.
