The image records what the browser received; by itself, it cannot tell you which signal triggered the site’s defenses—or prove that the agent has a rendering bug.
What a CAPTCHA screenshot tells you
A CAPTCHA, “Just a moment” interstitial, or access-denied screen is often a deliberate response from the website’s bot defenses. Sites use these controls to reduce automated abuse, and legitimate automated visits can be caught along with malicious ones. AWS notes that websites cannot reliably distinguish all legitimate agents from malicious bots (AWS Prescriptive Guidance).

The screenshot establishes the visible page state, not the reason for it. Check the final URL, page title and text, response or network state, and the agent’s execution trace where available. A successful navigation does not necessarily mean the browser reached the intended page content: it may have loaded a challenge instead.

Why a site may challenge an agent
There is no single universal trigger, and an image alone cannot diagnose one. Bot controls can consider several kinds of signals together, including browser and request characteristics, automation evidence, device or environment fingerprints, TLS fingerprints, and repeated-request patterns. AWS describes browser profiling, device fingerprinting, rate limiting, and TLS fingerprinting as possible bot-control techniques (AWS Prescriptive Guidance).

A site can apply challenges selectively—for example, to a login page, search, or form—and may present them as an interstitial or through a client-side mechanism. Changing one visible setting, such as the User-Agent, is not a dependable fix: the site may use other signals, and its policy may still deny access.
How to troubleshoot the screenshot
- Verify the destination. Compare the final URL with the URL the agent was meant to visit. Note whether the page is a CAPTCHA, an access-denied screen, a login prompt, or another interstitial.
- Preserve evidence. Save the screenshot and any request ID, challenge ID, or agent trace. Record the page title and visible text before retrying.
- Inspect browser and network state. If your tool exposes them, check the DOM or page text, redirects, network responses, and console output. Interpret these alongside the screenshot rather than inferring a cause from the image alone.
- Use an authorized route. Look for the site’s documented API or approved integration, or ask the site operator for permission. If the site permits it, a human may be able to take over the same live browser session to complete a challenge.
Cloudflare’s browser documentation describes inspecting browser state and handing a live session to a human for CAPTCHA, login, or MFA (Cloudflare Browser docs). A handoff is useful only when the site allows the underlying activity; it is not a reason to evade access controls.

If the CAPTCHA appears in ChatGPT
For recurring CAPTCHA prompts in ChatGPT, OpenAI advises checking VPN use and non-standard browser configuration or extensions, then trying an incognito window after checking VPN status. If the prompts persist, report them with a screenshot; the puzzle includes a request ID that can help support investigate. These are ChatGPT-specific steps, not a guaranteed fix for other agents or websites (OpenAI Help Center: CAPTCHAs in ChatGPT).
What signed agent identity can—and cannot—do
A participating site may be able to verify a signed agent identity and make a more informed access-policy decision. AWS describes Web Bot Auth for Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Browser as a preview feature based on a draft IETF protocol. It is conditional: support and policies vary, the protocol and feature may change, and website owners retain control to block, monitor, or rate-limit signed traffic (AWS Web Bot Auth documentation).

AWS’s October 30, 2025 announcement presents verifiable identity as an alternative to brittle CAPTCHA-solving automation, alongside the website owner’s policy choice (AWS announcement). This is not a universal CAPTCHA bypass: identity helps only where a site’s controls recognize it and the operator chooses to permit the request.

Choosing the next step
Use the route that matches the site’s rules and your task: an official API or explicit permission for routine access, a recognized signed identity where the site supports it, or a permitted human handoff when a challenge needs attention. If none is authorized, stop rather than trying to defeat the site’s controls.
