FSR 4 may be missing from a handheld because AMD’s ML-based upscaler depends on supported graphics hardware and game integration. AMD currently lists Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards for FSR Upscaling, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027; that compatibility statement does not confirm support for every handheld processor with AMD graphics. A game may also need to expose the feature or meet the requirements for AMD Software’s upgrade path.
What AMD currently confirms about handheld support
AMD now calls the feature “AMD FSR Upscaling with ML Technologies” on its FSR Technologies page. AMD says it is available on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series graphics cards, with RX 6000 Series graphics support launching in 2027. The statement names graphics-card families; it does not establish that all AMD APUs or handhelds are supported.

That distinction matters because an AMD processor or Radeon-branded integrated GPU is not, by itself, proof of FSR 4 compatibility. AMD’s original GPUOpen release specified RDNA 4 hardware, Windows 10 or 11, and DirectX 12. AMD’s RDNA 4 announcement described FSR 4 as exclusive to RX 9000 graphics cards at launch and explained that its ML algorithm used hardware-accelerated FP8 WMMA in RDNA 4. Those are launch-era requirements; AMD’s newer support page has since expanded its stated graphics-card support to RX 7000 and announced RX 6000 support for 2027.
Why reports about future handheld support do not guarantee it today
On October 7, 2026, TechSpot reported that AMD senior vice president Jack Huynh told South Korean media that official FSR support would reach a range of APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld gaming PCs before the end of 2026. Hardware Busters reported a plan involving a lighter model for some existing chips and a new generation of APUs, while noting that specific supported chips and feature details were not available. These reports describe a roadmap, not confirmation that a particular handheld can use FSR 4 now.

Neither report provides a complete model-by-model compatibility list. Until AMD identifies the exact chip and implementation, treat a planned expansion as distinct from shipping support. The reports are available from TechSpot and Hardware Busters.
Why the game may not show an FSR 4 option
Hardware support is only part of the check. Some games integrate AMD’s ML-based upscaler directly into their graphics settings; they may still label it “FSR 4” rather than “FSR Upscaling.” In other supported games, AMD Software can replace an existing upscaler with the ML-based version. AMD documents that software route for games with FSR 3.1 or later integration, and the game’s own FSR setting may still need to be enabled.

Frame generation is a separate feature. AMD’s documented frame-generation upgrade path requires FSR 3.1.4 or later integration. Do not assume that a missing frame-generation toggle and a missing upscaling option have the same cause.

- Identify the exact handheld and graphics hardware. Check the product’s precise model and GPU or APU, then compare it with AMD’s current compatibility statement. Do not infer support from AMD branding alone.
- Check the game’s graphics menu. Look for “FSR 4” or “FSR Upscaling.” A game may provide the ML upscaler directly, independently of the AMD Software route.
- Check AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. With the game closed, open Gaming > Graphics and look for the “AMD FSR Upscaling” and, where applicable, “AMD FSR Frame Generation” controls. AMD’s setup instructions require the game not to be running while configuring global graphics options.
- Confirm the game’s integration version if using the upgrade route. AMD documents the upscaling upgrade route for games with FSR 3.1 or later. For frame-generation upgrading, AMD specifies FSR 3.1.4 or later. The game’s in-game FSR option may also need to be switched on.
- If the setting is still absent, check current support for that exact combination. Verify both the handheld hardware and the game against AMD’s latest information. A driver update alone cannot be assumed to add official support to unlisted hardware.
What to conclude from a missing setting
A missing option can mean the handheld is not on AMD’s confirmed compatibility list, the game does not implement the ML upscaler, or the game requires the AMD Software path rather than a native menu setting. Check the device and game separately, and distinguish support AMD has shipped from support that has only been reported as planned.
