Amazon says it uses personal information to recommend products and services that may interest you, identify preferences, and personalize the Amazon experience. That information can include more than purchases: searches, product and content views, items added to or removed from a cart, orders, and other purchase or content-use history may all contribute. Amazon does not disclose the exact formula or the weight assigned to any one activity for an individual recommendation.
What Amazon means by shopping history
“Shopping history” can sound as if Amazon looks only at a list of completed orders. Its Privacy Notice describes a broader set of activity that it collects, including searches, product and content views, items added to or removed from a cart, orders, and purchase or content-use history. Amazon says it uses personal information to recommend features, products, and services, identify preferences, and personalize the experience with Amazon Services.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That makes it reasonable to understand a recommendation as potentially reflecting several kinds of interaction, not just something bought. Looking at a product, searching for a category, or putting an item in a cart and later removing it are examples of activity Amazon lists in its notice. The notice does not say that every one of these actions necessarily changes a particular recommendation, or how strongly it might do so.
Amazon’s stated purpose is personalization: showing products or services that might be of interest based on information it has about a customer. A recommendation is therefore not a definitive statement about what Amazon thinks a person wants, nor evidence that the person bought or even seriously considered the item. It is a personalized suggestion, and the public explanation does not reveal the exact rationale behind an individual placement.

Why a product can appear even if you did not buy it
A purchase is only one kind of activity in the history Amazon says it collects. A product may be relevant to an earlier search or view, or to an item added to or removed from a cart. Amazon’s notice supports those as possible inputs to personalization, but it does not let a shopper trace a specific recommendation to one action with certainty.
That distinction helps explain why recommendations can seem unexpected. A view or search is not the same as an expressed, lasting preference: someone might be comparing options, researching a gift, checking a price, or browsing casually. The notice does not describe how Amazon distinguishes those situations, how long a particular activity may matter, or whether other information changes the result. It would be misleading to treat an appearance as proof that Amazon has identified a firm preference.
Amazon’s public description is about purpose and categories of collected information, rather than a technical account of how each storefront recommendation is produced. It does not publish a consumer-store formula specifying, for example, how a product view compares with a purchase, how recent an action must be, or which signals are combined in a given case. Any precise explanation of why a particular item appeared would go beyond what the notice establishes.

What Amazon does—and does not—say about the recommendation system
Amazon’s Privacy Notice provides the clearest consumer-facing explanation: personal information is used to recommend products and services, identify preferences, and personalize Amazon Services. It also describes types of shopping and browsing activity that Amazon collects. Together, those statements establish that shopping activity may inform recommendations; they do not expose the production algorithm used for a specific Amazon.com recommendation.
Amazon also offers Amazon Personalize, a separate service for developers. Its AWS documentation describes recommendation capabilities that can use interaction data and item metadata. Some supported recipes can use real-time events, while the way new data affects results depends on the recipe and its update behavior. Those documents explain an AWS product, not the exact implementation of recommendations on Amazon.com. They should not be read as proof that the consumer store uses the same recipe, scoring method, or update interval.
This boundary matters because technical examples can sound more conclusive than they are. Amazon Personalize shows that Amazon provides tools for building recommendation systems with interaction data and metadata. It does not establish which model, data combination, or refresh schedule powers any particular recommendation a shopper sees on the retail site.

Store recommendations are not the same as ad personalization
A product recommendation within Amazon’s shopping experience and an advertisement are related only in the broad sense that both can be personalized. Amazon’s Privacy Notice treats advertising information separately from specific shopping actions. It says Amazon does not share specific actions such as purchases, product views, or searches with ad companies, while it may share advertising identifiers and estimates of ad value.

That distinction is important when interpreting what a recommendation means. Seeing an item in Amazon’s store does not by itself show that Amazon sent the underlying purchase, view, or search history to an outside advertising company. At the same time, the privacy notice’s description of advertising identifiers and estimated ad value should not be mistaken for a full account of every advertising practice or every control. The narrow point is that Amazon distinguishes these data categories in its notice.
How to change which activity informs recommendations
Amazon identifies three relevant controls: Improve Your Recommendations, an item-level Use this item for recommendations toggle, and Your Browsing History. These controls have different scopes. One lets you manage recommendations, another excludes a selected item from being used for recommendations, and the browsing-history page lets you edit recorded browsing history.

Manage recommendations with Improve Your Recommendations
- Open Amazon’s Improve Your Recommendations control while signed in to the account whose recommendations you want to manage.
- Review the available recommendation-management options and make the changes that fit your goal. Amazon’s Privacy Notice points to this feature as a way to manage store recommendations; it does not provide a complete list of every screen or option that may appear.
- For a specific item you do not want used as a recommendation input, use that item’s Use this item for recommendations toggle and switch it off.
The item-level setting is targeted: it concerns the selected item. It should not be treated as a global switch that stops Amazon from personalizing all recommendations or prevents other kinds of activity from being collected.
Edit Your Browsing History
- Open Your Browsing History in the Amazon account you use for shopping.
- Review the recorded browsing entries and edit the history using the controls shown there.
Amazon points to this page as a way to edit browsing history. Editing that history is distinct from turning off the recommendation use of one item: the first concerns the recorded browsing list, while the second is an item-level recommendation control. The public description does not specify that editing browsing history erases every other record Amazon may hold or changes every recommendation immediately.

Amazon says that signing out and blocking cookies can let someone browse its websites without linking browsing history to the account. That is a narrower claim than stopping all tracking or personalization everywhere: it concerns the connection between website browsing history and an account. It does not establish what happens across other devices, services, or contexts.
Best Value
There is a practical trade-off. Amazon warns that rejecting cookies can interfere with essential store features, including using a cart, checking out, or accessing services that require sign-in. Cookie blocking is therefore not a friction-free setting for someone who also needs normal shopping functions.
If the goal is to reduce account-linked browsing rather than keep shopping as usual, signing out and blocking cookies are the measures Amazon describes. If the goal is to manage recommendations while continuing to use an account, the recommendation and browsing-history controls are more targeted options. Neither choice should be described as a guarantee that every kind of personalization stops.
Which control fits your goal?
| Goal | Relevant control | Scope and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manage the store recommendations shown to you | Improve Your Recommendations | A recommendation-management control identified by Amazon. The specific options presented may vary; Amazon’s notice does not enumerate every screen. |
| Exclude one particular item from recommendation use | Turn off Use this item for recommendations for that item | Targeted to the selected item, rather than a global stop to personalization. |
| Edit the list of recorded browsing activity | Your Browsing History | Addresses browsing history. Amazon’s notice does not say that editing it erases all other information or immediately changes every recommendation. |
| Browse without linking website browsing history to an account | Sign out and block cookies | Amazon says this can avoid linking browsing history to the account, but cookie rejection can interfere with cart, checkout, and sign-in features. |
How to interpret recommendations without overreading them
- A recommendation can be informed by more than completed purchases, because Amazon lists searches, views, cart changes, orders, and other activity among the information it collects.
- An item’s appearance does not reveal which action influenced it, how much influence that action had, or whether Amazon inferred a lasting preference.
- Amazon’s consumer-facing notice describes the purpose and broad categories of information, not an exact algorithm, signal weights, or retention period for recommendation inputs.
- The AWS Amazon Personalize documentation describes a separate developer product and cannot establish the precise machinery behind a recommendation on Amazon.com.
- Recommendation controls, browsing-history editing, and cookie settings serve different purposes; changing one is not a guarantee that all other forms of personalization stop.
Amazon’s own concise explanation is: “We use your personal information to recommend features, products, and services that might be of interest to you, identify your preferences, and personalize your experience with Amazon Services.” That is the best-supported answer to why products appear: Amazon uses personal information for personalization, and its listed information includes shopping activity. The reason behind any one item remains undisclosed.
