Amazon moved the power button from the bottom edge to the upper-right side on its refreshed 2026 Kindle models to make one-handed operation feel more natural and reduce accidental presses, according to its October 2026 announcement in Japan. The change addresses a familiar complaint, but it also reverses a placement that Amazon representatives had previously linked to cost and internal component layout.
What changed on the 2026 Kindles?
Amazon’s Japan announcement says the refreshed 2026 models place the power button on the upper-right side of the device rather than along the bottom edge. Amazon’s stated aims are more natural one-handed operation and fewer accidental presses. That is the company’s design rationale; the announcement does not report results from a controlled usability comparison.

The launch details in that announcement are specific to Japan and the October 2026 announcement: the basic Kindle models were on sale there, while Paperwhite and Colorsoft variants were available for preorder, with shipping planned for November 11. Availability and release timing may differ elsewhere, so check the listing for your market.
Why was the button on the bottom before?
Reporting by TechRadar describes two earlier considerations. Amazon VP of Design Chris Green reportedly said the original placement was chosen to keep costs down. Kindle hardware lead Kevin Keith had said in 2024 that the button needed to be close to the display’s light guide.

- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
These are explanations reported from interviews, not a published engineering breakdown. They indicate that cost and component layout informed the older design, but do not establish that either was the only constraint or quantify the manufacturing savings.
What trade-offs does the new position address?
Accidental presses
TechRadar and Tom’s Guide describe readers accidentally pressing the bottom-edge button while resting or propping up a Kindle, sometimes switching it off during reading. Those accounts show the kind of frustration Amazon’s change is meant to address, but they do not establish how often it happened among Kindle owners. Amazon has not published a measured reduction in accidental presses.

One-handed use
Amazon says the upper-right-side position is intended to feel more natural to operate with one hand. That is a stated design goal, not independent evidence that every reader will find it easier. Hand size, grip, and whether someone reads left- or right-handed may affect how the placement feels.
Internal layout and cost
The reported cost and light-guide explanations help make sense of why the older bottom-edge location may have been attractive to designers and engineers. They do not, by themselves, show what changed inside the 2026 models or how much the move affected production cost.

Does your Kindle have the relocated button?
No: the change is not universal across Kindle generations. Amazon’s support instructions for the 2024 Paperwhite identify its power button on the bottom edge. Check the exact model and generation before following button instructions or buying a case; the 2026 Japan announcement does not establish that every regional model has the same layout or availability.

If accidental bottom-edge presses are a recurring problem for you, the relocated button is a relevant difference to consider in a 2026 Kindle Paperwhite listing. Amazon’s stated ergonomic aim may suit your habits, but there is no published comparative test here showing how much the change improves comfort or reduces mishaps. Confirm that the specific model sold in your region has the upper-right-side button, and check case compatibility by generation.
