If a mobile game looks soft or has harsh, haloed edges after upscaling, first identify where it is being rendered. On a phone or tablet, start with the game’s resolution, upscaling and sharpness options; on Android Emulator, check its graphics mode; on a PC, check supported GPU-level sharpening only if that is part of your setup. Change one setting at a time and compare the same scene.
Why upscaling can look blurry or too sharp
Mobile upscaling can reduce GPU work by rendering a game at fewer pixels than the display output, then reconstructing a larger image. Arm describes Neural Super Sampling (NSS) this way; Qualcomm describes Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR) as a spatial upscaler designed for Adreno GPUs. Because the starting image has fewer directly rendered pixels, fine detail can look soft even when the upscaler reconstructs a higher-resolution output. That is a general explanation, not a diagnosis of a particular game or device. Arm’s overview of neural technology for mobile games and Qualcomm’s 2023 GSR description explain these approaches.

Over-sharpening has a different likely cause: sharpening may be built into the upscaling stage or applied separately by the game or graphics driver. Qualcomm says GSR integrates edge sharpening. On supported desktop setups, NVIDIA and AMD also document separate GPU-level scaling or sharpening features. Stacking those filters can make edges look crunchy or produce halos. NVIDIA’s Manage 3D Settings reference and AMD’s Virtual Super Resolution and Radeon Image Sharpening documentation describe desktop controls; they are not general phone settings.

Arm distinguishes neural super sampling, which reconstructs an image from fewer rendered pixels, from neural frame-rate upscaling, which generates intermediate frames, and neural denoising, which targets ray-tracing noise. Those techniques address different problems, so a frame-generation setting is not necessarily the control to change when a still image looks blurry.

Fix a game running directly on a phone or tablet
- Open the game’s graphics settings. Look for render resolution or resolution scale, an upscaling mode or quality choice, anti-aliasing, and a sharpness control. Menu names and availability vary by game.
- If the image is blurry, test more source detail. If offered, raise the internal render resolution or select a higher-quality upscaling mode. Rendering more pixels may increase GPU work and can affect performance or power use; the actual effect depends on the game and device.
- If edges look harsh, lower sharpness first. Reduce or disable the game’s sharpening slider before changing other graphics options. If the upscaler itself integrates sharpening, the game may not expose a separate control.
- Compare one change at a time. Use the same scene and inspect both a still view and camera movement. Consider edge quality, detail stability in motion, smoothness, and heat or power during a consistent play session rather than judging a single screenshot alone.
- If the problem began after an update, reset the game’s graphics options. Restore the affected settings to their defaults and retest before changing unrelated system settings.
Arm and Qualcomm describe reducing rendering workload as a purpose of their mobile upscalers, but that does not establish a performance result for a particular phone. There is no single setting that can be recommended for every game, device, and upscaling implementation.
Fix Android Emulator graphics problems on a computer
This applies only when the game is running inside Android Emulator. Emulator graphics acceleration controls how the emulator renders on the computer; they are not a fix for a game running natively on a phone. Android Developers recommends the auto graphics option for most users. The host option uses the computer’s GPU hardware, while software rendering backends are alternatives when hardware modes cause problems. If the picture became wrong after changing the emulator’s graphics mode, return to auto and check whether the image improves. Avoid changing several emulator and in-game options simultaneously: isolate the rendering mode first, then assess the game’s own resolution and sharpness controls.

NVIDIA and AMD controls matter only when the game is being rendered through a supported PC GPU path—for example, a PC game or an emulator running on that computer. They are not universal settings for Android phones. NVIDIA documents an adjustable Sharpen control in its 3D settings; AMD describes Radeon Image Sharpening as contrast-adaptive sharpening and documents compatibility limits. Exact options depend on hardware, driver and application support.

- If the game has its own sharpness control, reduce that before adding driver sharpening.
- If the desktop driver also applies sharpening, disable or lower it while comparing the game’s own setting.
- Do not assume a desktop scaling option is available or appropriate for a native mobile game.
What not to change first
Do not treat all AI graphics features as interchangeable: image upscaling, frame generation and denoising do different jobs. Avoid editing protected game files, installing unofficial “AI enhancer” apps, or forcing hidden driver parameters as routine fixes; safe, supported steps for those actions are not established here. For exact menu names, use the game or device maker’s support information, since settings differ by title and hardware.
