Why AI Hasn’t Replaced Software Engineers—and Why It May Not Replace the Whole Role

AI is widely used to assist with software development, but coding is only part of engineering. Current studies show varied productivity results and do not establish long-term job impacts.

AI can generate and modify code, but that is only part of software engineering. Building and maintaining a dependable system also involves decisions about requirements, project context, testing, operations and, in some roles, mentoring or coordination. Current evidence shows widespread AI assistance, not wholesale replacement of software engineers. It cannot guarantee that engineering jobs will never be displaced.

Writing code is only one part of software engineering

A coding assistant can suggest an implementation or help produce a test. Engineering a working product also involves deciding what should be built, fitting changes into an existing system, checking how they behave, and responding when requirements or operating conditions change. Which of those responsibilities an engineer handles varies by role and team; generating code does not by itself settle them.

This distinction matters because automating a task is not the same as replacing an occupation. AI can take on portions of a workflow while people remain responsible for integrating the result, judging whether it fits the problem and coordinating work that depends on human context.

Where developers use AI—and where they still want people

A Microsoft Research mixed-methods study of 860 developers, published in October 2025, found strong current use of AI and demand for better support in coding and testing. Developers also wanted help reducing documentation and operations toil. The study identified clearer limits for identity- and relationship-centered work such as mentoring.

That is a picture of uneven task support, not a count of jobs eliminated. The same study highlights different needs by context: reliability and security for systems-facing tasks, transparency and steerability so developers can retain control, and fairness and inclusiveness for human-facing work.

DORA’s 2025 report, based on responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals worldwide and more than 100 hours of qualitative data, describes AI as an “amplifier” of an organization’s existing strengths and weaknesses. In practice, an AI tool is introduced into a team’s existing processes; the quality of those processes affects what the tool helps accomplish.

Why productivity findings differ

“Does AI make developers more productive?” has no single answer in these sources. They examine different workers, projects and outcomes: reported experiences, counts of tasks completed, or time spent on a defined set of tasks.

Evidence What it measured Finding and scope
International AI Safety Report: First Key Update (2025) Workplace experiments using code-completion tools Developers completed 26% more tasks in the large workplace experiments summarized by the report; benefits were greater for less-experienced developers.
METR trial (July 2025) Completion time in a randomized trial involving 16 developers and 246 tasks on mature open-source projects Allowing AI increased completion time by 19% in this trial. Participants had moderate AI experience and an average of five years’ familiarity with the projects. The authors said experimental artifacts could not be entirely ruled out.

These are not head-to-head results: the studies differed in experience, project complexity and tools, among other factors. The International AI Safety Report discusses those differences as possible explanations. It also warns that accepting code without adequate review can create technical debt. Neither result establishes what AI will do to productivity in every team or over the long term.

Why review and responsibility still matter

In Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey, 46% of respondents said they actively distrust the accuracy of AI output, while 33% said they trust it. These are reported attitudes, not objective measurements of error rates. The survey also found that 66% had encountered AI solutions that were “almost right, but not quite,” and 45% said debugging AI-generated code was more time-consuming.

Those responses help explain why producing a plausible answer does not finish the job. A change still has to be checked against the project’s requirements and constraints. Stack Overflow respondents also expressed resistance to AI use for high-responsibility systemic work such as deployment and monitoring, as well as project planning. In its question about future advanced AI, the survey asked when developers would still seek another person’s help—a reminder that human assistance includes more than code answers.

What the evidence does—and does not—say about jobs

The studies described here document adoption, task preferences, reported trust and productivity in particular settings. They do not show that software engineering jobs as a whole have already been replaced, and they do not provide a causal, occupation-wide forecast of future headcount.

So “AI won’t replace software engineers” is too certain if it is meant as a promise about every future job. The defensible point is narrower: coding assistance is not equivalent to automating all the work that engineering roles can contain, and the available evidence does not demonstrate wholesale replacement. AI may change which tasks engineers do and how teams organize them; how that affects employment remains unsettled.
