Why AI Can Feel Mentally Overwhelming—and How to Reduce the Load

AI can save effort on one part of a task while adding work in deciding what to ask, reviewing the answer, and checking it. Here’s how to keep the process manageable.

AI can save time on drafting or searching while adding work elsewhere: deciding what to ask, judging the answer, checking important details, and choosing what to do with the result. That shift can make using AI feel mentally tiring, even when the tool is useful. The experience is not proof that you are prompting badly; it can reflect the extra decisions the interaction requires.

Why using AI can take more mental effort than expected

A 2024 CHI paper describes metacognitive demands—the work of monitoring and directing your own thinking—as distinct from cognitive load, the overall mental effort a task requires. Generative AI can add metacognitive work at several points: clarifying your goal before you prompt, evaluating whether to trust the response, and deciding whether or how to automate part of a workflow. These demands vary with the task and interface; different ways of interacting with AI do not impose identical demands. The paper’s framework helps explain why the strain is not simply a matter of writing a better prompt.

  • Unclear goal: If you do not yet know what a useful result looks like, you may have to work that out while also directing the tool.
  • Too much to assess: A long answer or many alternatives can leave you deciding what matters before you can use anything.
  • Uncertain reliability: You may need to check claims, correct errors, and decide which parts—if any—are suitable to rely on.
  • Workflow choices: You still have to determine where AI fits, what it should handle, and how its output connects to the rest of the task.

These are practical applications of the paper’s conceptual framework, not effects established by a consumer trial. The paper does not show that one prompt style or routine works for everyone.

AI can reduce some work and increase other work

The balance depends on what the AI is doing and what the user must do around it. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis by Eun Jeong Gong, Chang Seok Bang, and Jae Jun Lee examined 21 studies involving 2,885 healthcare professionals in seven countries. It found different workload results across clinical applications—not a general result about consumer chatbots.

Clinical application What the 2026 review found Evidence qualification
Ambient AI documentation Lower pooled NASA-TLX temporal demand (SMD −1.46; 95% CI −2.81 to −0.11) and effort (SMD −1.29; 95% CI −2.16 to −0.42). Each pooled result came from 2 studies. The review describes wide confidence intervals and a limited evidence base, including voluntary early-adopter cohorts.
Diagnostic imaging AI Workload findings were mixed or sometimes higher. The review rated certainty for workload evidence in this area very low.
Clinical decision-support systems Workload findings were mixed or sometimes higher. The review rated certainty for workload evidence in this area very low.

The review rated certainty as moderate for cognitive-workload reduction with ambient AI and low for burnout reduction. Its findings are specific to healthcare professionals and clinical tools; they do not establish that everyday AI use relieves stress or has a net benefit for the general public. The authors describe the net effect of clinical AI on the healthcare workforce as an open empirical question. Read the systematic review and meta-analysis.

Why checking AI output can be tiring

Using AI can move a person from producing content to supervising generated content. That does not make review automatic or effortless: the reviewer must notice when an answer is wrong, incomplete, or inappropriate. In a clinical human-AI interaction brief, the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality describes risks including automation complacency, automation bias, confirmation bias, and functional fixedness. Under time pressure or heavy workload, people may rely too readily on automated output; a suggestion that fits an existing belief may also receive less scrutiny. These are clinical human-factors examples, not direct evidence about every consumer use.

The AHRQ brief cautions: “However, this approach relies on the notion that humans will be effective and consistent reviewers of AI-generated content—an assumption that does not always hold true.” AHRQ’s Human-AI Interaction brief was last reviewed in July 2025.

  1. Choose one outcome first. Before opening the tool, decide what finished result you need—for example, a short outline or a summary of a specific document. A clearer goal can reduce the work of repeatedly reconsidering what to ask; this is an application of the framework, not a proven intervention.
  2. Set limits on the response. Ask for a format and scope you can assess, such as a brief checklist or a few options. The sources do not establish an ideal number of words or alternatives; the point is to avoid creating more material to evaluate than the task needs.
  3. Decide what needs checking. Identify consequential facts or recommendations before using the answer, then verify them against an appropriate source. UK government guidance includes quality-assuring accuracy and assessing whether a task is suitable for AI as parts of effective use. The People Factor guidance was published on 4 June 2025.
  4. Stop when the result is good enough for its purpose. Further rounds may add more evaluation and integration work. This is a reasonable application of the framework, not a measured treatment effect.
  5. Keep judgment with the person doing the task. For consequential decisions, do not treat a plausible response as a substitute for appropriate expertise or primary-source checks. Human review is important, but the AHRQ discussion shows why it should not be treated as infallible.
  6. Use another method if AI adds more work than it removes. UK guidance explicitly recommends assessing whether a task suits AI and disregarding tasks for which it is unsuitable.

How teams can avoid turning AI into hidden workload

Workload is not only an individual’s problem to solve through better prompting. ISO 10075-2:2024 sets out ergonomic design principles for work systems, including task and equipment design, workplace design, and social and organizational working conditions, with the aim of preventing both overload and underload. ISO’s overview of the standard describes that design scope.

The UK government’s 2025 People Factor guidance calls for human-centred planning, engagement, training and support, risk management, and monitoring as organizations adopt and optimize generative AI. It warns that access and instructions alone do not ensure effective use: “Just because you give people access to new tools and guidance on how to use it, it doesn’t mean that they will use it well.” For a team, that means clarifying which tasks are appropriate for AI, training people to assess outputs, and measuring whether a new workflow adds review, approval, or handoff work.

Context and transparency can also matter in specialized settings. In its updated May 2026 living guidance for research, the European Commission discusses AI interactions with third parties in meetings and information management, as well as hidden prompts that users may not see. This is specific to research settings; it should not be read as evidence that hidden prompts commonly cause consumer overwhelm. Read the Commission’s updated ERA guidance.

A quick way to decide whether AI fits a task

Before using AI—or continuing a session—consider the work around the output as well as the output itself. These comparison questions are practical inferences from research on prompting, verification, task suitability, and workload; they are not a validated consumer scale.

  • Goal clarity: Do you know what finished result you need?
  • Review burden: How much checking and correction will the response require?
  • Cost of error: Does the task need expert review or verification against primary sources?
  • Output volume: Is the response concise enough to use, or does it create more alternatives to judge?
  • Workflow fit: Does AI remove a real bottleneck, or add a handoff and another approval step?

If the goal is unclear, the stakes are high, or review outweighs the time saved, narrowing the task or choosing a non-AI method may be more useful than prompting again.

What the evidence does—and does not—say

The available workload synthesis here concerns healthcare professionals using clinical AI, while the metacognitive-demand paper offers a conceptual account rather than a randomized trial of personal tactics. The clinical findings do not establish that consumer AI causes or treats anxiety, burnout, or another mental-health condition. No general-public estimate of how often people experience AI-related overload is established by these sources. The most defensible conclusion is narrower: AI can shift effort, and whether it reduces or increases the total depends on the task, interface, review burden, and fit with the workflow.
