They can also connect through Chromium’s Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP), although Playwright warns that this connection has lower fidelity than its native protocol.
Different interfaces for different jobs
| Aspect | Agent-browser | Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Interaction style | Command-line interface with commands to navigate, inspect, and interact with pages. Agent-browser project documentation | Browser automation library with browser, context, and page APIs for code and test suites. Playwright documentation |
| Typical workflow | Open a page, read its content or accessibility snapshot, then act on an element using a reference or semantic command. It also documents selectors, screenshots, browser state, tabs, and network inspection. Agent-browser project documentation | Define browser interactions and their lifetimes in code; use it for repeatable end-to-end checks and automation. Playwright documentation |
| Browser coverage | The cited documentation describes Chromium-oriented CDP connection capabilities; it does not establish equivalent cross-browser coverage to Playwright. Agent-browser project documentation | Supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Playwright documentation |
| Control structure | Agent-facing commands and page snapshots. | Explicit browser contexts and pages. Playwright recommends contexts for production code and test frameworks; its convenience browser.newPage() is intended for short, single-page scenarios. Playwright browser API |
The difference is useful rather than redundant. An agent can use concise commands to inspect a page and choose an action; a test or application can use Playwright code to define precise, repeatable behavior. A team may use both when it needs an agent-facing workflow and a programmable automation layer.

How the CDP connection works—and where it differs
Chrome DevTools Protocol is the documented bridge between the tools when agent-browser is managing a Chromium-based browser. Agent-browser documents a connect command and a way to retrieve the browser’s CDP URL; Playwright can attach to an existing Chromium browser with connectOverCDP. See the agent-browser connection documentation and Playwright’s CDP API reference.

That is an attachment route, not a guarantee that the two tools share every feature or behave exactly alike. Playwright explicitly says CDP connections have significantly lower fidelity than its Playwright-protocol connection. If your workflow depends on particular browser state or Playwright behavior, validate it using the connection mode you intend to deploy. The documentation establishes that both tools support the connection path; it does not guarantee seamless concurrent control by both.

Choose the tool that fits the work
Use agent-browser for agent-led inspection and interaction
Its CLI suits a compact loop: navigate to a page, inspect readable content or an accessibility snapshot, identify an element, and interact with it. Element references and semantic commands can make that workflow easier for an agent to express than writing a full browser-control program for each action. Its documented capabilities also include screenshots, tabs, browser state, selectors, and network inspection. Agent-browser documentation
Use Playwright for code and repeatable tests
Choose Playwright when browser automation needs to live in application code or a test suite, or when you need to define explicit context and page lifetimes. Its browser, context, and page APIs provide that structure, while its Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit support makes it suitable for cross-browser automation. For production code and test frameworks, follow its recommendation to use explicit browser contexts instead of relying on the short-lived browser.newPage() convenience method. Combine them when the boundary is useful
A practical division is to let an agent use agent-browser for interactive page work while Playwright handles scripted checks or application-level automation. If both need access to the same Chromium browser, CDP may provide the connection, but its fidelity limitation and the absence of a documented guarantee for simultaneous control make project-specific validation important.

Agent-browser is not currently a Playwright wrapper
Agent-browser’s changelog says version 0.20.0, dated March 13, 2026, made the project fully native Rust and removed the Node.js/Playwright daemon. The current relationship is therefore better understood as complementary interfaces with possible browser-level interoperability, not a requirement for Playwright to run agent-browser. Agent-browser changelog
The same changelog reports this project benchmark comparison:
| Measurement | Node.js version | Rust version |
|---|---|---|
| Cold start | 1,002 ms | 617 ms |
| Daemon memory | 143 MB | 8 MB |
| Install size | 710 MB | 7 MB |
These are figures published by the agent-browser project for its comparison, not independent measurements of the two tools or a general performance guarantee. Agent-browser changelog

Local or hosted browser execution
Local browser execution is not suitable for every environment. Agent-browser documents integrations with hosted browser providers, which can be relevant in CI, serverless deployments, or environments where managing a local browser is impractical. The right choice depends on the deployment environment; the documentation establishes integrations, not that any one provider is best. Agent-browser provider documentation
