A website’s “update your browser” warning can mean your browser is genuinely missing a feature the site needs—or that the site has misidentified a current browser. Check the installed version and update through the browser’s own menu first. If it is already current, troubleshoot extensions and settings; the warning alone does not prove your browser is obsolete.
Why does a website say your browser is outdated?
There are two main possibilities: a real compatibility limit or an inaccurate warning. A website may rely on newer browser features, support only versions it has tested, or prefer a browser for which it has optimized its site. Microsoft lists outdated software, unsupported features, and site optimization as possible reasons for its “This website works better in Microsoft Edge” notice on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Support policies vary by site. GOV.UK Frontend, for example, assigns browser versions different support grades, with the most recent stable versions of major browsers in its highest grade. One site’s warning does not establish that your browser is unsupported everywhere. GOV.UK Frontend’s browser-support policy illustrates how such policies can differ.
The site may be reading your browser incorrectly
Websites can use browser information called a user agent to identify the browser. That information can be changed by an extension or customization, or misread by the site. Mozilla says an incorrect Firefox user agent can trigger an outdated or incompatible warning even when Firefox is up to date. Mozilla’s Firefox troubleshooting guidance explains the issue.

User-agent detection is also inherently brittle: strings may include overlapping or conflicting browser labels. MDN describes browser detection based on user-agent strings as unreliable. MDN’s browser-detection guidance discusses why. Microsoft’s developer guidance, dated January 4, 2024, likewise recommends detecting specific features where possible rather than relying on browser identity. Microsoft Edge’s user-agent guidance is aimed at web developers; it does not mean every warning is wrong.
How to check whether the warning is real
- Check the installed version. Open the browser’s About or Help menu and look for its version and update option. Use the browser’s built-in update mechanism rather than a download link in a pop-up or warning page. Some old browser versions may no longer be supported; Google provides browser-specific support guidance. Google Account Help’s browser troubleshooting page.
- Apply any update and restart if prompted. Reload the site afterward. A pending update may not take effect until the browser restarts; this depends on the browser and device.
- If the browser is current, check extensions. Temporarily disable extensions, especially ones that modify browser identity or privacy behavior, then reload the site. Mozilla identifies add-ons as a possible cause of a changed Firefox user agent and recommends checking extensions when the warning persists. Mozilla’s troubleshooting steps.
- Check site-related settings. Confirm JavaScript is enabled and review whether strict privacy settings or security software are interfering with the site. Google includes JavaScript, extensions, privacy settings, and security software among its troubleshooting checks. Google Account Help.
- Try another supported browser. If the site works there, the problem may be specific to the current browser or the site’s implementation. If it fails in more than one browser, that points toward a site issue, though it does not prove the cause. Changing the reported user-agent label cannot add browser features that are actually missing.
- On a managed device, ask the administrator first. Work or school security policies may control browser settings and extensions. Google advises users of company computers to contact their administrator about managed security settings. Google Account Help.
What to send the website’s support team
If the browser is current and the warning remains, report the issue to the website. Include the site name, the complete warning text, your browser name and version, your operating system, and whether the same page works in another browser. These details help support staff distinguish a site-specific support policy from a detection or compatibility problem.

A user-agent change and actual feature support are different things: making a browser report a different identity will not supply a feature it lacks. The site may need to correct its detection logic or clarify which versions it supports.
