CSS naming a font does not install or deliver it. For consistent results, provide a licensed web font, specify a fallback stack, and choose how text should appear while the font loads.
Why the font can change between openings
CSS uses the first usable family in a font-family list. If Gill Sans is not installed on a visitor’s device and the page does not deliver it as a web font, the browser moves to the next family or generic fallback. A declaration that only names Gill Sans therefore cannot ensure every visitor sees Gill Sans.

A font that is delivered over the web may also take time to load. During that interval, the browser can render fallback text and later replace it with the requested face. That visible change is often called a flash of unstyled text. The SitePoint thread from October 2024 describes a Gill Sans page that reportedly showed a default font on first opening and appeared correct after reopening; participants suggested font availability and loading behavior, but the thread does not establish the current cause of that site’s symptom. Read the SitePoint discussion.

| Approach | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Rely on a font installed on the visitor’s device | The browser can use the font when it is installed; otherwise it falls through to the next family. This is not a cross-device guarantee. MDN: font-family |
Deliver a licensed font with @font-face or a web-font service |
The page can request the font resource rather than depending only on local installation. Self-hosted files need a valid source URL and appropriate weight and style descriptors. MDN recommends WOFF2 for typical modern web delivery. MDN: @font-face |
| Use an alternative downloadable face | The SitePoint participants suggested Cabin and Lato as alternatives, but the discussion does not verify that either is an exact visual match for Gill Sans or establish licensing for a particular use. SitePoint thread |
Set a fallback and loading behavior
Use a sensible fallback so text stays readable if the preferred family is unavailable. Quote family names containing spaces, and include a generic family at the end:
#1 Best Overall
body {
font-family: "Gill Sans", "Gill Sans MT", sans-serif;
}
If the page provides a web font, define it with @font-face and use that family in the stack. For example, the file path and family name below are illustrative; replace them with a licensed font file and a URL that actually resolves on your site.
@font-face {
font-family: "Site Sans";
src: url("/fonts/site-sans.woff2") format("woff2");
font-weight: 400;
font-style: normal;
font-display: swap;
}
body {
font-family: "Site Sans", Arial, sans-serif;
}
font-display controls the presentation while a downloadable font is loading. With swap, fallback text is shown and can be replaced when the web font arrives. It does not make an absent, blocked, or unreachable font file available. Other values alter the loading and replacement behavior; choose based on whether visible fallback text or avoiding a later visual change matters more. MDN: font-display

Troubleshoot the first-load problem
- Check the applied CSS rule. Inspect the affected element and confirm the actual
font-familystack. Check spelling, quotation marks around names with spaces, and whether another rule overrides it. - Determine whether the font is local or delivered. If the CSS only names Gill Sans, visitors without it will see a fallback. For consistent rendering, provide a legally usable web-font resource or use a font service. MDN: font-family
- Verify a self-hosted font declaration. Check that
@font-facepoints to the right file and that the declared weight and style match the text using it. MDN: @font-face - Inspect the font request. Reproduce with a clean browser cache, then check the browser’s network panel and console for a failed or delayed font request. This is a diagnostic step, not evidence that caching caused the reported problem.
- Review the fallback and display strategy. Make sure the fallback remains legible and decide whether the font should swap in after loading. A display setting changes the loading experience, not font availability. MDN: font-display
