When the Canadian dollar weakens against the U.S. dollar, a Canadian shopper needs more Canadian dollars to pay the same U.S. price. The conversion depends on the exchange rate used for the transaction; the Bank of Canada’s posted rate is a reference, not necessarily the rate or fees a card or payment provider applies.
How a weaker Canadian dollar changes the price
A U.S. price is stated in U.S. dollars (USD). To estimate its cost in Canadian dollars (CAD), multiply the USD price by the exchange rate quoted as CAD per USD. When that figure rises, each U.S. dollar costs more Canadian dollars.

Illustrative calculation
Suppose an item costs USD 100. At a hypothetical rate of CAD 1.30 per USD, its converted price is CAD 130. At CAD 1.40 per USD, the same item converts to CAD 140, before any payment fees. These figures illustrate the arithmetic only; they are not current rates or a provider’s offer.

The Bank of Canada describes a weaker dollar as bad for Canadians shopping or travelling abroad. In this case, the reason is straightforward: the U.S. seller’s USD price has not changed, but it takes more CAD to cover it. Bank of Canada: Understanding exchange rates

Why the amount at checkout may differ
The exchange rate used in a simple estimate may not match the rate applied to a card or other payment. The Bank of Canada says, “All Bank of Canada exchange rates are indicative rates only, obtained from averages of aggregated price quotes from financial institutions.” Its published figure is useful as a reference, but does not establish a shopper’s card rate, bank spread, fee, merchant conversion offer or final CAD charge. For a real purchase, check the conversion rate and fees shown by the payment provider for that transaction. If a merchant offers to charge you in CAD rather than USD, compare the displayed amount and terms with the conversion terms from your payment provider; the available evidence does not establish which option will be cheaper for a particular shopper.

Why this does not mean every Canadian price rises by the same amount
The direct conversion of a U.S. sticker price is different from the price a Canadian retailer sets in CAD. A weaker Canadian dollar can increase the Canadian-dollar cost of imported finished goods and imported inputs, but businesses decide whether and when to pass those costs on. The effect depends on factors such as a product’s import content, demand, the costs of changing prices and how long firms expect the currency move to last. Pricing and the route a product takes to market also matter, so retail prices do not necessarily move immediately or in step with the exchange rate. Statistics Canada’s examination of import prices and the Canada–U.S. exchange rate from 2018 through 2022 found co-movement after the second quarter of 2021 that may suggest pass-through to import prices. That relationship does not show that exchange-rate changes alone caused every change in import prices. Statistics Canada: Import prices and the exchange rate

How exchange rates affect cross-border shopping and retailers
A stronger Canadian dollar can make U.S. shopping more attractive to Canadians and reduce Canadian-dollar costs for importers. Those effects can pull in different directions for Canadian retailers: import costs may fall, while some retailers—particularly those exposed to shoppers crossing the U.S. border—may face more competition for sales.
A 2019 Bank of Canada staff working paper estimated that a 57% appreciation of the Canadian exchange rate from 2002 to 2012 led to a 6.5% reduction in the retail price index. Those are historical, model-based estimates for that period, not a forecast or a rule for how prices respond to any currency move. The paper also found estimates consistent with direct-importing retailers passing lower import costs through to prices, while firms near the U.S. border faced sales pressure associated with cross-border shopping. Its findings do not predict the outcome for every retailer or the current period. Bank of Canada Staff Working Paper 2019-34

What to compare before deciding where to buy
A lower U.S. sticker price does not by itself establish that buying there will save money. Compare the full costs and terms on both sides:
- The U.S. price converted using the transaction exchange rate, not just a reference rate.
- Any payment or currency-conversion fees.
- Shipping, travel and other costs involved in getting the item.
- Whether the product is the same and whether its warranty and return terms are comparable.
There is no product-by-product price comparison or current provider-fee data here, so no general savings conclusion follows from the exchange rate alone.

Why the Canadian dollar moves
The foreign-exchange market determines the Canadian dollar’s value. The Bank of Canada lists relative interest rates, relative inflation, demand for financial assets, and demand for Canadian goods and services among factors that can influence it. No single factor explains every move.
For example, in an analysis dated January 29, 2025, the Bank said the Canadian dollar had declined against the U.S. dollar since October 2024, mostly because of rising uncertainty around trade policies, with a modest contribution from a widening policy-interest-rate differential. That explanation describes the developments covered by that analysis; it is not a current explanation for the exchange rate in October 2026. Bank of Canada, January 29, 2025
