Why battery use may rise after an update
Apple Support explains that an Apple Watch can be used immediately after watchOS is updated even though certain tasks related to the update continue in the background. Those tasks may affect battery life while they run. Apple does not specify which tasks are involved, so it is not possible to attribute the change to a particular activity such as indexing or syncing based on this guidance alone.

Apple’s recommendation is to wait a few days after noticing reduced battery life, then check again. “A few days” is guidance, not a promise that battery life will return to normal by a particular day. What to check while you monitor battery life
Battery use varies with how you use the watch and the conditions it operates in. If you want to make the comparison more useful, keep everyday use and connection conditions as consistent as practical while you wait.

- Keep the watch near its paired iPhone when practical. When you are away from the iPhone, Apple advises considering Wi-Fi rather than mobile data where available; connection strength also matters.
- Review Background App Refresh. You can review this setting in the Watch app on your iPhone under General > Background App Refresh. Turning it off or limiting it may affect how apps refresh their content.
- Consider Low Power Mode only if its tradeoffs suit you. It changes or disables some features to reduce power use. Apple lists examples including Always On Display, background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, and heart-rate notifications. Check battery health if the problem continues
After the post-update period, check the battery’s reported capacity if battery life remains poor. On the watch, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health and look at Maximum Capacity. This figure is an estimate of capacity relative to when the battery was new; it is not a direct measure of how much charge remains during the day.
Apple says to contact Apple Support if the watch reports that its battery needs service or if you suspect the battery needs replacement. A capacity estimate can change after recalibration
For some models after specified software updates, Apple says the watch recalibrates its reported maximum battery capacity to provide a more accurate estimate. A changed reading after recalibration is not, by itself, proof that the battery suddenly became damaged. Apple does not state how much the displayed capacity may change, and the listed cases do not apply to every model.
