A failed video download can come from five different places: the video or account is not eligible, the connection drops, the device cannot save the file, the server denies access, or the downloader cannot handle the available format. Start with the exact error message and check those layers in order; the right fix depends on which one failed.
Start by identifying what failed
Before changing settings or trying another tool, note the complete error message, the video site, the downloader and its version, your device and operating system, and whether the problem affects one video or every video. These details help distinguish a local storage problem from an access denial or a format issue.

There is no universal fix for every downloader. The steps below identify the likely failure layer without assuming a particular app or operating system.

1. Confirm the video and account are eligible
Check that the video is still available and that the account you are using has permission to view or download it. Some platforms restrict downloads to their own offline-viewing feature, particular membership levels, or videos you uploaded yourself.

YouTube’s official download options
For YouTube offline downloads, YouTube’s download videos to watch offline help says to make sure you are signed into the account with the required Premium membership. The feature is not a general way to download another user’s video as a file: YouTube’s download your own YouTube videos help says creators can download their own uploads, while viewers can use offline viewing in the YouTube app with Premium where available.
If you are trying to download your own upload and YouTube’s feature refuses, its help lists possible restrictions including a removed video, a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, preapproved audio, and downloading the same video more than five times in 24 hours. These are YouTube-specific conditions, not general limits for all video sites or downloaders.
2. Check the connection and retry a paused transfer
Confirm that the device has a working internet connection. If the signal is weak or unstable, switch to a more reliable network when practical, then resume a paused transfer or retry it once. Repeated attempts on a failing connection are unlikely to resolve the underlying problem.

YouTube says its own downloads require a strong internet connection and recommends at least 3 Mbps. That is YouTube’s service-specific guidance, not a universal minimum or a guarantee that a download from another site will work. Google Chrome’s download errors help also identifies unstable internet as a cause of interrupted file downloads and recommends trying again later or resuming a paused download.
3. Make sure the device can save the file
A transfer may be valid but fail because the destination drive is full or the app cannot write to the selected folder. Check available space and verify that the chosen destination exists and is accessible to the account running the downloader.
- “Disk full”: Chrome says this means there is not enough space on the computer to download the file. Free space or choose another supported destination.
- “Insufficient permissions” or “System busy”: Chrome associates these errors with an inability to save the file. Check folder access and whether the destination is available.
For YouTube offline downloads on a supported phone or tablet, YouTube documents using an SD card to avoid using internal storage in its download videos to an SD card help. Other apps may not support an SD card or external drive, so confirm the downloader and device can use the destination before selecting it.

4. Treat authorisation and server errors as access problems
Messages such as “Needs authorisation,” “Forbidden,” or an HTTP 403 usually point toward an account, permission, or server-side access issue rather than a full drive. Check that you are signed in to the right account and that the video is available to it. Chrome recommends checking authentication and contacting the site owner if permission is absent.

Those are possible explanations, not a diagnosis for every 403. Do not assume that changing networks, exporting cookies, or using another workaround is permitted; use the site’s authorized download method and account access.

If the download finishes but has no sound, no picture, or will not play, the problem may be the selected format or how the downloader handles separate streams. Some sites provide audio and video separately, particularly at higher quality; a downloader may need to merge them into a playable file. The yt-dlp FAQ describes this behavior for some sites, notably YouTube.

If the message names an unavailable format, select one the downloader actually lists or consult that tool’s current documentation. The exact setting varies by app, so do not assume that a menu path or format choice from one downloader applies to another.
