If a umux session disappears after you close a terminal window, first check whether the umux process that hosts it is still running. Closing the terminal may have ended that process, but the umux documentation does not establish exactly what happens for every operating system, version, or launch method. Run umux ls, then check status and recent logs. For future sessions, keeping umux inside a detached tmux session can help the host process survive a terminal disconnection; it is a practical workaround, not a documented umux setting or a guarantee against machine restarts.
What “the window closed” may mean
Here, “window” most likely means the terminal window from which umux was launched. umux is described as an API-based, stateful shell-session tool, not a terminal interface organized around windows and panes. Its README describes a workflow for creating a shell, sending commands, waiting for output, reading logs, and removing a session. It also says shell state—such as the working directory and environment—persists across commands. That does not establish that a live shell survives when the process hosting umux exits. The project README does not explain whether closing a particular terminal ends the umux server, a spawned shell, or both; the result may depend on how and where umux was started.

Check whether the session is still alive
- Open a terminal in the same environment where you ran umux and enter
umux lsto see whether the session is listed. - If it appears, run
umux statusand inspect recent output withumux logs --tail 100. These commands help distinguish an accessible session from one that has stopped producing output. - If the session is absent, treat its shell as ended unless you can verify otherwise. If you configured
UMUX_LOG_DIR, inspect the corresponding JSONL log for the last recorded input and output.
umux’s README says that UMUX_LOG_DIR enables durable input/output logs. Logs can help reconstruct what happened, but they are records of activity—not a restored shell or proof that a program is still running. The README also notes that default history is kept in memory and that disk logging is optional. See the umux README.

If closing the terminal also terminates the process hosting umux, run that process inside a detached tmux session. tmux is designed to keep a session resident on its host after you disconnect, and you can reattach when you reconnect. The UIUC NCSA guide documents this behavior for sessions on its login node. The approach is a host-process persistence workaround: the reviewed umux documentation does not describe an umux-specific detach option, and tmux cannot protect a session from a reboot of the machine or login node.

umux’s README states: “All waits require --timeout (or set via UMUX_DEFAULT_TIMEOUT). No infinite hangs.” That governs how long waits behave; it does not promise that sessions persist after their host process or terminal ends. The statement appears in the project README.
If the problem persists
If the umux process appears to be alive but its session is missing or inaccessible, gather the details needed to narrow down the cause rather than assuming a known window-close defect:

Do not confuse a umux session problem with a tmux server error. tmux’s FAQ says that messages such as “server exited unexpectedly” or “lost server” usually indicate a crashed tmux server; a killed server or deleted socket can also explain missing tmux sessions. That advice concerns tmux itself and does not diagnose umux. Read the tmux FAQ.
