An order is an instruction with conditions: its price, trigger, time-in-force, and other qualifiers can keep it open, limit it to a partial fill, or cause it to expire or cancel. Check the order’s details and confirmed status before changing or submitting it again.
This guide covers U.S. stock orders. Broker labels, supported order types, routing, and rules for other assets or countries may differ.

Why didn’t my limit order fill?
A limit order sets the worst price you are willing to accept. A buy limit can execute at the limit price or lower; a sell limit can execute at the limit price or higher. It will remain open if the market does not meet that price condition while the order is active. As Investor.gov puts it, “A limit order can only be filled if the stock’s market price reaches the limit price.” Investor.gov explains common order types.
A displayed quote or a chart showing the stock briefly at your limit does not prove your order should have filled. Quotes apply to finite available quantities, prices can move as orders are routed, and your order may not receive an execution at a displayed or last-traded price. A limit order prioritizes price control over certainty of execution.

Why is my order still pending?
Submitting an order sends an instruction to your broker; it does not itself execute a trade. The broker routes the order to a market or another execution venue, and prices can change during that process. The SEC does not require execution within a set time. Investor.gov describes how stock trading works.
Market orders generally execute promptly, but the execution price is not guaranteed. Available shares at a quote are finite, and larger orders may fill in pieces at different prices. If only part of an order executes, the app may show a partial state while the remainder stays active, depending on the order’s terms.

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
- NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). Then twelve identical weeks: five Daily Logs, five Deep Dive trade pages, and a two-page Weekly Review. 189 guided pages, roughly 80 trades. Guided prompts walk you through every step. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
- BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.
How stop orders can trigger without an execution
Stop order
A stop order waits until its trigger condition is met, then becomes a market order. Once triggered, it generally seeks execution, but the price is not guaranteed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

A stop-limit order also waits for a trigger. When triggered, it becomes a limit order, so it can remain unfilled if the market does not meet its limit-price condition. A trigger is not the same as a completed trade. Brokers may differ in which stop types and trigger methodologies they support. See Investor.gov’s order-type guidance.
Check the order’s duration and qualifiers
Time-in-force and order qualifiers determine how long an instruction stays active and whether it can fill partially. Availability and handling vary by brokerage. FINRA’s guide to stock-order time parameters and qualifiers was updated July 17, 2024.
| Instruction | What it means for an unfilled order |
|---|---|
| Day | Generally expires at the end of that trading day if it has not filled. |
| Good ’til canceled (GTC) | Can remain active beyond the day, but the broker’s expiration limit varies. |
| Immediate-or-cancel (IOC) | Fills any amount immediately available and cancels the remainder. |
| Fill-or-kill (FOK) | Cancels the whole order if it cannot fill immediately in full. |
| All-or-none (AON) | Prevents a partial fill; unlike FOK, it may remain active rather than requiring an immediate full execution. |
| On-open or on-close | Restricts the order to the opening or closing process; check whether your broker supports the instruction and whether it is still eligible. |
Also check for a minimum-quantity condition or another qualifier that could restrict execution. An order may not be active in extended-hours trading simply because the stock is trading outside regular hours; confirm the session settings for that order in your app or with the broker.

What to inspect safely in the app
- Confirm the instruction. Check the security, buy or sell side, share quantity, and order type. Make sure they match what you intended.
- Review price conditions. For a limit or stop-limit, compare the limit with the current market and verify which stop trigger applies. A price appearing on a chart is not proof of a fill.
- Check duration and session. Review time-in-force, any minimum quantity or other qualifier, and whether the order is intended to work in the current trading session.
- Read the detailed status. Look for open, partial, filled, rejected, expired, or canceled status and any reason provided. App labels are broker-specific; use that broker’s help material or contact support if the label is unclear.
- Verify before acting again. Confirm whether any shares have already executed before submitting a replacement. If you request cancellation, wait for the broker’s confirmation that it took effect: an order can execute before cancellation becomes effective.
Investor.gov cautions that an apparent cancellation receipt alone should not be treated as confirmation that the original trade was canceled. Check the order with your broker if its status or cancellation state is uncertain.
Choose the tradeoff, not a supposed guarantee
No common order type guarantees both a particular price and an execution. A market order generally offers greater likelihood of prompt execution, but its price is uncertain. A limit order constrains the acceptable price, but may not execute. Stop orders add a trigger stage; stop-limit orders can remain unfilled after triggering. Time-in-force and qualifiers further affect duration and partial-fill behavior.

Do not loosen a limit or switch to a market order just to clear a pending status unless the changed price-versus-execution tradeoff matches your intent. If the order’s routing, supported type, or status remains unclear, consult the brokerage rather than guessing from the app label.
What execution statistics can—and cannot—tell you
SEC Rule 605 reporting materials describe how execution-quality reporting treats unexecuted and partially executed orders, but that reporting context does not establish the probability or timing of a fill for an individual customer order. The SEC’s Rule 605 FAQs include entries new or modified April 1, 2026; they are not a guarantee about a particular order.
