If a small solar-powered car won’t move, first give its panel strong direct sunlight and check whether the motor turns while the wheels are lifted off the ground. A motor that stays still points to insufficient light or an electrical connection problem; a motor that spins while the wheels do not points to the axle, gears, or assembly.
Start with a safe, simple test
- Move the car into direct sunlight. Aim the panel toward the sun. Shade, cloud cover, or a panel facing away from the sun may leave it without enough power to start the motor. A bright indoor room is not a reliable substitute. Science Buddies recommends direct sunlight on a sunny day.
- Lift the car so its wheels can turn freely. This removes ground friction from the test. Watch the motor and wheels: whether the motor spins determines which checks to make next.
If the motor does not spin, check light and wiring
Keep the car in direct sunlight with the panel facing the sun. Then compare the wiring with the diagram in the instructions for your exact model. Check that the panel wires are firmly connected to the motor, and look for loose or broken leads. Science Buddies recommends checking connections and repairing loose or broken ones; Pro’sKit’s GE-617 support FAQ also identifies insufficient sun and incorrect connections as possible causes.

- Check for wires touching or crossing where the instructions say they should not. A short can heat the connection and melt contact points, according to Pro’sKit’s GE-617 FAQ.
- If a wire or contact looks hot, melted, or damaged, stop using the car until the fault is corrected. Do not keep testing a suspected short; ask an adult or a qualified person for help if needed.
If the motor spins but the car does not move, check the drivetrain
With the car lifted, turn a wheel gently by hand and see whether the axle moves freely. Look for debris, a jammed axle, or a transmission that binds. If the motor shaft spins but the axle does not, inspect the gear teeth: they need to meet and mesh. Science Buddies advises realigning the motor or axle so the gears engage.

For a kit you assembled, compare the car with its instructions. A part installed in the wrong position or plastic burrs left on a trimmed part can interfere with smooth operation. Pro’sKit identifies assembly and incompletely trimmed burrs as possible causes.

Use the instructions for model-specific repairs
The right wiring, polarity, parts, and power arrangement depend on the car. Check the manual for the exact model before changing wiring or replacing a component; do not assume a generic panel or motor will be compatible. If the manual does not resolve the problem, contact the manufacturer. Pro’sKit’s GE-617 product page describes one battery-free solar science kit, but its parts are not established as compatible with other cars.
