A project can still work after it is parsed and saved while its original text has changed—or while information the editor never understood has disappeared. The distinction is the persistence boundary: what enters the application, what its editable model represents, and what the application can promise to preserve when it writes the project back.
Three different guarantees hide behind “save and restore”
When evaluating import, editing, serialization, or restore behavior, ask three separate questions:

- Can the application understand the input as a project? This is an admission and interpretation question.
- Which fields can the typed model edit? A model can represent only the fields its schema and implementation know about.
- Can it keep the user’s original representation where it does not own a change? This is a preservation question, and it may concern meaning, characters, or bytes.
A “yes” to the first question does not establish a “yes” to either of the others. Likewise, a model that edits known fields does not automatically retain unknown fields or the source spelling of known values. DEV Community’s October 1, 2026 article, “Exact Text vs Reconstructed State: A Persistence Boundary Lesson”, frames these as distinct promises rather than a single claim of lossless persistence.
Why parsing can make exact reconstruction impossible
Parsing turns a representation into values the application can work with. That is useful, but the conversion can discard distinctions present in the input. Once discarded, those distinctions cannot be recovered merely by serializing the resulting model.

A large JSON number
The article uses the JSON number 9007199254740993 as an example. If an application parses it as an ordinary JavaScript number, the value can be rounded. Serializing that in-memory number cannot reproduce the original digits reliably: the parser has already lost the lexical information needed to do so.
Formatting, ordering, and unsupported fields
Even when the parsed values retain the intended meaning, a serializer may emit different whitespace or key order. It may also omit fields the application’s model does not represent. Whether those changes matter depends on the product’s contract: a source-oriented tool may need to preserve formatting, an editor may need to carry extension fields it does not interpret, and a migration may intentionally normalize the document.

Choose the fidelity contract before choosing a storage design
“Preserve the project” is too broad to guide implementation or testing. State which fidelity level is required for each boundary:
- Semantic preservation: formatting may change, provided supported meaning remains unchanged.
- Text preservation: retain characters, ordering, and user-authored formatting wherever the product promises that surface.
- Byte preservation: retain the exact carrier when signatures, encoding, unknown fields, or unsupported extensions must survive.
These contracts need not be mutually exclusive. An application can keep a parsed model for editing and retain original source material for the round trips that require it. On export, it must make an explicit choice: regenerate from the model, or forward preserved source material while applying only the changes it owns. A successful parse-and-serialize test with ordinary fixtures does not establish byte equality.

Keep preserved source tied to the boundary that admitted it
A preserved carrier can hold information outside the editable model, but it is not a substitute for validating the input or deciding which authority is allowed to accept it. It must also belong to the project identity and lifetime for which it was admitted; otherwise a later save could apply stale source to a different project.
The DEV Community article describes WorldScript Studio’s restore and import paths as carrying admitted source alongside the editable model. In that account, the source is admitted after relevant identity and schema checks, then serves as the starting point for a later save while application-owned fields are overlaid. These are implementation details reported by the article, not an independent verification of the application.

The design lesson is to preserve the richest representation a particular boundary needs, bind it to the authority and project context that admitted it, and make each transformation explicit. The model makes data usable; the carrier can support a narrower preservation promise.
Storage adapters can support different guarantees
A filesystem path and a browser database do not necessarily store the same representation. The article distinguishes a filesystem path, where an application can preserve and write original text, from IndexedDB, where the relevant stored value is structured data. Because those boundaries carry different forms, they cannot be assumed to provide identical byte-level behavior.

Scope the promise to the adapter and operation that support it. For example, “the filesystem restore path preserves admitted text” is a bounded claim; “the application preserves every project byte in every adapter” is not supported by the design described in the article. Document what is retained, what is regenerated, and what normalization is expected at each path.

A round-trip test that checks only whether the output parses as valid JSON proves that the output is valid JSON. It does not prove that unknown fields, large-number lexemes, or the original source representation survived. Conversely, byte-for-byte equality is the wrong assertion when the product intentionally removes machine-local metadata.

- Where byte identity is required, compare the exact output against the admitted input, accounting explicitly for any owned edits.
- Where semantic preservation is required, assert semantic invariants and document allowed normalization instead of requiring identical text.
- Check that fields the application owns receive the intended edits, while opaque fields promised for preservation remain present.
- Assert that prohibited metadata is absent and unsupported inputs fail closed.
- For browser-backed state, test aborted writes and quota failures as well as successful persistence.
These are test-design recommendations from the article, not a report of independent testing. The appropriate assertions follow from the contract: preserve what is promised, permit only documented transformations, and reject inputs the boundary is not authorized or equipped to accept.
A practical review checklist
Before documenting or changing a persistence path, answer these questions for that specific path:
