If a portable carpet cleaner barely picks up dirty water, start by checking its recovery tank: it may be full, improperly seated, or blocked by a dirty filter or accessible debris. Before troubleshooting: turn off and unplug the cleaner
Use the steps below only for removable parts and checks described in your cleaner’s manual. Portable machines do not all have the same tank, filter, float, hose, or pickup layout. Do not open the motor or reach into moving parts or openings unless the manual specifically directs you to.

Check the recovery tank first
Empty a full tank
A full dirty-water tank can stop suction. Empty it as directed by the manual, and look for visible debris around the tank and its seating area. Rug Doctor lists a full waste-water tank as a cause of no or low suction; BISSELL says suction stops when the dirty-water tank is full. Reseat the tank securely
If the tank is not installed correctly, the collection path or seal may not work as intended. Reinstall it firmly according to the manual. On the BISSELL HydroSteam models covered by its support instructions, debris under the tank can also interfere with seating.

Inspect the tank filter and accessible debris
Check the filter or screen associated with the dirty-water tank. A clogged screen can reduce or stop suction. Rug Doctor advises cleaning debris from the portable spot cleaner’s waste-water tank filter screen. BISSELL gives a red-filter cleaning procedure for Little Green HydroSteam models 3532, 3618, 3605, 3605F, and 3606. Follow the cleaning method in your own model’s instructions; do not assume every filter should be rinsed, brushed, or replaced the same way.
Where your manual allows, remove visible debris from the tool, hose port, or area beneath the tank. BISSELL identifies debris in the tool and under the dirty-water tank as possible suction problems on the models named above. Clear only accessible areas and avoid forcing objects into the suction path.

Check hose and seal connections only as your model allows
A loose hose or poorly seated seal can interrupt dirty-water pickup. For the rental-machine setup described in Rug Doctor UK’s guide, check that the dome filter is connected properly, the black rubber tank seal sits flush, and the grey hose connector is snapped into place. A test point on one machine may not apply to another. BISSELL’s instructions for the listed Little Green HydroSteam models call for testing suction at the red filter after cleaning it. Follow only the test for your exact model and keep hands away from moving parts and openings unless the manual explicitly tells you otherwise.

When to stop and contact support
If emptying and reseating the tank, cleaning the accessible filter, and checking permitted connections do not restore suction, stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or rental provider. BISSELL directs users with unresolved suction problems to support. Rug Doctor UK says to return its rental machine to the store if suction is absent at both the hose and front pickup. The cited guidance does not provide a universal internal repair procedure, so do not open the motor or attempt an unsupported repair.
