The symptom alone does not identify the cause. Start by refreshing the player and restarting the app; then check whether other apps or devices work, inspect the HDMI and network connections, and confirm that your service and account can show the event.
Start with the quickest checks
- Refresh or reopen the player. Refresh the browser, or force-close and reopen the streaming app. Close other apps and unnecessary browser tabs. ESPN and NBC Sports list these as basic steps for stalled or poor playback (ESPN playback troubleshooting; NBC Sports FAQ).
- Restart the device. Power it down fully, restart it, and try the stream again. Check that the app and device software are current and supported. If the problem remains isolated to one app, clearing its cache or browser data—or reinstalling the app—may help; NBC also recommends restarting the modem or router (ESPN playback troubleshooting; NBC Sports FAQ).
- Check the connection. See whether another video app streams on the same device. For a phone or tablet using mobile data, try Wi-Fi. For a TV or streaming device on Wi-Fi, move it closer to the router or test a direct Ethernet connection if practical. NBC Sports recommends Ethernet as a way to improve stability when wireless playback is choppy or buffering; it is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix (ESPN playback troubleshooting; NBC Sports FAQ).
- Check the display path. Make sure HDMI cables are firmly connected and try another HDMI port if available. Display-protection errors and settings can be device-specific: YouTube TV publishes Roku-specific guidance, which should not be applied to other devices without checking their instructions (YouTube TV troubleshooting).
- Confirm access to the event. If other programs play but this golf event does not, check that the service offers the event, your subscription includes the channel, and your account and location meet the service’s requirements. For NBC provider-linked viewing, signing in again or relinking the provider may resolve stale authentication. What the symptom can—and cannot—tell you
Buffering, freezing, a spinning wheel, and blank or black video are different symptoms, but none proves a particular cause. A weak or unstable connection is one possibility; so are an app problem, unsupported or outdated device software, a faulty display path, interfering software, or a restriction on the event. Use the checks below to narrow down which part of the setup is involved rather than assuming there is an outage or hardware failure.

Spinner, buffering, or choppy playback
Refresh or reopen the player, close other apps, and test another app on the same device. Check Wi-Fi signal and whether other devices are using the connection heavily. If you are watching on mobile data, try Wi-Fi; if a TV or box is on Wi-Fi, compare it with a direct Ethernet connection where possible. Router distance, wireless interference, other connected devices, and an ISP issue may all affect playback. The cited support guidance does not establish a golf-specific minimum internet speed.
Black screen or blank video
After reopening the player, check the HDMI connection and try another app or device. ESPN identifies content filters, antivirus software, proxy accelerators, and pop-up blockers as possible causes of video not displaying. NBC also suggests checking ad blockers or other software that may interfere with streaming. Only one event or channel fails
If other live channels or shows work, focus on whether that specific event is available to your service and whether your subscription, provider sign-in, location, and platform are eligible. Sports restrictions can be determined by partner rights and location, so a single event failing does not by itself point to a network problem (NBC Sports FAQ; YouTube TV sports restrictions).
Use other apps and devices to locate the fault
Change one variable at a time so the result is useful. Test a different app on the same device, then try the same golf stream on another supported device. If possible, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. These comparisons do not prove a cause, but they help identify whether the failure follows the event, service, device, or connection.

When to contact support
If the same service fails across supported devices while other apps work, contact the streaming service and include the event, device, app version, and any error message. If multiple apps fail on one device, device or network support may be more relevant. ESPN advises contacting its support team after its troubleshooting steps do not resolve playback.
