Windows on Arm can run many x86 and x64 games through emulation, but that does not guarantee a game will launch. A common blocker is a required anti-cheat or other driver that is not made for Windows on Arm. Check the game publisher’s current compatibility guidance before trying repairs; if the game depends on an unsupported component, local troubleshooting may not fix it.
Why a game may not launch
Emulation does not cover every dependency
Windows can emulate many apps built for x86 and x64 processors. Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism, which Microsoft says improves emulation for apps that are not built for Arm. This expands what may run, but it does not make every game, graphics path, driver, or anti-cheat system compatible. Anti-cheat and other drivers can be the blocker
Microsoft warns that some games and apps may not work on Windows 11 Arm PCs if they rely on anti-cheat drivers that were not made for those devices. A game itself may run through emulation while a required driver does not. Drivers need to be built for Windows on Arm; emulating the game cannot supply a missing compatible driver. Compatibility depends on the particular game
There is no blanket answer for all games on Windows on Arm. Check the game publisher’s latest support information. Microsoft also points users to Works on WoA, a crowdsourced compatibility resource; treat its listings as a clue, not as an official publisher guarantee. Compatibility can change as Windows, drivers, and games are updated.

How to troubleshoot a game that will not launch
- Write down the relevant details. Note the exact game and launcher, PC model or processor, Windows version and build, where launch stops, and the full error message. These details help identify whether the game or a required component is supported.
- Install Windows updates and restart. Microsoft recommends keeping Arm-based Surface devices up to date. A restart is also a basic Windows app troubleshooting step. Updating may resolve ordinary software issues, but it cannot make an unsupported driver compatible. See Microsoft’s Surface guidance and Windows app repair guidance.
- Check the publisher’s support page before changing settings. Search for the game name alongside “Windows on Arm,” “ARM64,” “anti-cheat,” and the exact error. If the publisher identifies a known compatibility issue, follow its guidance rather than trying unrelated fixes.
- Look for a driver or anti-cheat failure. If the error points to one of these components—or the publisher says it is unsupported—ask the publisher whether an update is planned or available. A local repair cannot replace an incompatible driver.
- Try Repair for an ordinary app problem. For an installed desktop program, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, then choose Advanced options if shown. Select Repair when available; if that does not help, Reset may be offered. The exact options vary by app. Microsoft documents these steps in its app and program repair guidance. They address common app issues, not known platform incompatibility.
- Contact the publisher if the game should work but still fails. Send the exact error, Windows build, PC model or processor, and the steps already tried. Microsoft directs users to the game or app publisher for compatibility questions because the publisher determines whether its product works on Windows on Arm. Microsoft’s FAQ explains this distinction.
What not to try
- Do not disable anti-cheat or bypass a game’s security controls to force a launch.
- Do not install unsigned drivers or rely on generic driver-updater utilities. They cannot make an unsupported driver compatible and may introduce security or stability problems.
- Do not assume a repair utility, controller, or other accessory will resolve a software or driver compatibility issue.
If the game is unsupported
If the publisher confirms that a required component is not supported on Windows on Arm, the practical choices depend on the game and your location: wait for publisher support, choose a compatible game, or investigate whether a cloud-gaming service offers that exact title in your region. Cloud gaming is not a guaranteed workaround; availability, catalog, device support, and pricing vary.
