Why a “Final” Android Release AAB May Still Be Unsigned or Untested

A release AAB can still be unsigned and cannot be installed directly. Check the selected variant, configure release signing, and test through generated APKs or Google Play internal testing.

A release-labeled Android App Bundle is not automatically signed, installable, or ready for users. Check the selected build variant, confirm that release signing is configured, and test the bundle through generated APKs or Google Play internal testing before calling it final.

Why a release AAB may not be final

An .aab is a publishing artifact containing compiled code and resources. Google Play uses it to generate APKs tailored to device configurations; the bundle itself is not an APK and cannot be installed directly on a device. A build type named release describes how the app is built, not whether the resulting bundle has been signed.

Gradle does not sign a release bundle unless a signing configuration is assigned. Android Studio’s ordinary Generate Bundle(s) action can also produce an unsigned release AAB. That is why a file named or labeled “release” can still be short of a publishable upload artifact.

Check the variant and signing configuration

Confirm the exact variant

Gradle combines a build type with any product flavor to form a build variant. Flavors can use different source sets, resources, and configuration, so two outputs with similar names may not contain the same app. In Android Studio, inspect the selected variant in the Build Variants tool window before generating the bundle.

Make sure release signing is assigned

For a Gradle-built release bundle, check that the base module’s release build type references the intended signing configuration in its build configuration. Keep the keystore and private key secure and maintain protected backups. If using Android Studio, use the Generate Signed Bundle / APK wizard when you need the release bundle signed; this is distinct from the ordinary bundle-generation action. See Android’s build-variant and signing configuration guidance and its explanation of signed and unsigned release outputs.

Understand which key signs what

When Play App Signing is enabled, the upload key signs the bundle submitted to Google Play so Play can verify who uploaded it. Google Play then signs the APKs distributed to users with the app-signing key. The uploaded AAB therefore need not carry the same signature as an APK installed by a user. If the upload key is lost or compromised, Play Console provides a reset process for enrolled apps; losing the app-signing key for an app not enrolled in Play App Signing can prevent future updates. Details are in Android’s app-signing documentation.

Test the bundle before treating it as a release candidate

Choose the testing route based on what you need to verify. A locally generated APK helps confirm the bundle can produce deployable packages. A Play internal test exercises more of the actual distribution pipeline, including Play signing and shrinking.

Route What it validates How closely it matches Play delivery
Generate APKs locally with bundletool Lets you inspect the bundle and deploy APKs generated from it without publishing to Play. Useful for local checks, but it does not exercise Play’s complete processing path.
Google Play Console internal testing Tests a Play-mediated build, including Play signing and shrinking. Closer to the APKs users receive through Google Play.
Firebase App Distribution Shares builds with testers, including CI-produced builds. The cited documentation does not establish that it reproduces Play’s signing path.

Android describes local APK generation and internal testing in its Play Console upload guidance. For release readiness, also test the release version under realistic device and network conditions, as recommended in Android’s release-preparation guidance.

Use the right signing method for an AAB

Android documents jarsigner as a separate command-line step for signing an app bundle. apksigner signs APKs; it cannot sign an AAB. Do not apply an APK-signing command to a bundle. For a Gradle release bundle, configure signing in the base module’s build configuration. See Android’s command-line build documentation for bundle and signing details.

Before uploading a corrected update

  • Verify the intended build variant and product flavor.
  • Confirm the release signing configuration or generate a signed bundle through Android Studio’s signed-bundle flow.
  • Remember that the AAB is not directly installable; generate APKs with bundletool or test through Play.
  • Use Play internal testing when you need a closer approximation of Play’s signing and shrinking.
  • For an update, increase the base module’s version code and upload a newly built full app bundle.

Android’s upload guidance covers version-code updates and bundle submission. These checks distinguish an output that merely exists from one that is signed for upload and has been tested through an appropriate delivery path.
