A corded vacuum may be the better buy if your home has a lot of carpet, pets, or frequent, lengthy cleaning sessions: it can keep running without a battery recharge break. A cordless stick is often more convenient for quick pickups and stairs. Neither type is automatically better at cleaning; compare the exact models on the surfaces and messes in your home.
When a corded vacuum makes more sense
Choose corded when uninterrupted cleaning matters more than freedom from a power cable. That can suit homes with extensive carpet, pets, or enough rooms that a cordless model’s runtime and recharge cycle would interrupt the job. Larger dust cups can also mean fewer stops to empty, although capacity varies by model.

“Corded” does not necessarily mean a bulky upright. Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide shows corded-stick models weighing from 3 to 9 pounds, including the 3-pound Bissell Featherweight 2033M and 9-pound Shark PowerDetect HZ4002. Weight alone does not establish how comfortable a vacuum is to push, carry, or use on stairs, so consider handling results as well.

A cordless stick may be more practical if you mainly clean up small messes, move between rooms without changing outlets, or want to vacuum stairs without managing a cord. Its trade-off is battery runtime: check the stated runtime and charging time for the specific model, and consider whether they fit your usual cleaning session. A corded machine avoids a battery-runtime limit, but its cable restricts reach and requires access to outlets.

Which cleans better: cordless or corded vacuums?
There is no reliable type-wide winner in the available model results. Cleaning performance depends on the individual vacuum and the surface. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide gives the Shark PowerDetect HZ4002 an overall score of 85, but an overall score is not a promise that it will suit every floor or household. Its guide price is $290; that is a dated guide figure, not a live retail quote.
Consumer Reports describes the Shark Rocket HV301 as strong on bare-floor debris and pet hair, respectable at edge cleaning, and only so-so at removing dirt from carpets. It reports a 73 overall score and a 30-foot cord. By contrast, the Dirt Devil Vibe SD20020 scores 31 overall and performs poorly on carpets, with only marginally better results on bare floors. These model-level results are a reminder to compare the exact vacuum, not assume that every corded stick performs alike.

- POWERFUL SUCTION FOR CARPET & HARD FLOORS: Clean carpets and hardwood floors with strong multi-surface suction. This lightweight upright vacuum cleaner lifts dirt, debris, and pet hair for a complete home clean.
- LIFT-AWAY FUNCTIONALITY FOR ABOVE-FLOOR CLEANING: Detach the pod to clean stairs, furniture, and more—attach the upholstery or crevice tools to clean dust and debris from baseboards, curtains, blinds, tight spaces and other surfaces.
- PERFECT FOR PET HAIR CLEANUP: Powerful suction and a specialized upholstery tool removes pet hair from carpets, furniture, and stairs with ease—ideal for homes with pets and everyday messes.
- HEPA FILTER WITH ANTI-ALLERGEN COMPLETE SEAL: Advanced HEPA vacuum technology traps dust and allergens* inside the vacuum, helping deliver a cleaner home environment. *Allergens refer to non-living matter.
- SWIVEL STEERING FOR EASY MANEUVERABILITY: Navigate tight spaces, corners, and around furniture with ease using smooth swivel steering for effortless control across floors.
The Rocket HV301 is a corded stick, so the comparison is not simply “corded versus stick”: a stick vacuum can be corded or cordless. Consumer Reports recommended the Rocket as an alternative to the Vibe in its March 17, 2026 article, but its stated carpet limitation matters if carpet is a major part of your home.
How to compare models for your home
- Match tests to your floors. Look for separate results on carpet and bare floors, especially if your home has both. A model that collects debris well from hard floors may not be the right choice for deep or extensive carpet.
- Check pet-hair and edge pickup. These are distinct tasks; do not assume a strong overall score means strong results on both.
- Compare reach with runtime. For a corded model, check cable length against room size and outlet placement. The 2026 guide lists 30-foot cords for the Shark PowerDetect HZ4002 and Shark UltraLight PetPro HZ702. For a cordless model, compare its stated runtime and charge time with the size of the job.
- Consider handling, not just weight. A lighter machine may be easier to carry, but check how it feels in use and whether it is practical for stairs, furniture, and storage.
- Look at capacity and upkeep. Check bin or bag capacity, how it empties, filter and brush-roll maintenance, and whether the required parts and tools are available for the exact model.
- Verify the deal and configuration. Prices, stock, included tools, and model configurations can change. Confirm them with the retailer before buying, rather than treating a guide price as current.
What the model examples do—and do not—show
The 2026 Consumer Reports guide is useful for comparing listed models, features, and test results, but its values are not population-wide claims about all corded or cordless vacuums. Its $290 figure for the Shark PowerDetect HZ4002 is a guide price, not evidence of its current selling price. Likewise, the cited scores and performance descriptions apply to the named models; they do not establish that corded vacuums generally last longer, cost less over their lifetime, or outperform cordless machines.

- POWERFUL SUCTION WITH SCATTER-FREE TECH. Engineered to capture messes on hard floors with less scatter and powerful suction on carpets. Enjoy a convenient, highperformance clean in one machine.
- COMPACT & LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN. Weighing less than 8 pounds, this vacuum is easy to carry and store. Perfect for dorms, apartments, and small living spaces without sacrificing cleaning power.
- REMOVABLE EXTENSION WAND. Features a quick-release wand to easily clean abovefloor surfaces like curtains, upholstery, and baseboards. Tackle dirt and debris in tight spaces with ease.
- EASY EMPTY DIRT CONTAINER. The bagless design allows for quick and mess-free emptying with the push of a button. Keep your hands clean and your home debris-free.
For a specific purchase, use current independent results where available, then prioritize the surface and cleaning task that matter most in your home. If you are comparing the Rocket HV301 with the Vibe SD20020, the Rocket’s stronger reported results make it the better-supported option of those two, while its so-so carpet performance remains a meaningful drawback for carpet-heavy homes.
