If a person is missing from WhatsApp, the usual cause is that WhatsApp cannot read the phone’s contact entry, has only limited access to the address book, or cannot match the saved number to a WhatsApp account. Start by searching WhatsApp for the person’s name or number. Then check contact permissions, verify the number’s international format, and use the platform-specific refresh steps below.
The exact menus differ between iPhone models, Android versions, and manufacturers. If a label is different on your phone, use Settings search for “WhatsApp” or “Contacts” rather than guessing.

What “missing” means in WhatsApp
Several different problems look alike:
- The person is not listed when you start a new chat.
- A conversation exists, but it shows a phone number instead of the saved name.
- Only some contacts disappeared after you changed phones, accounts, or permissions.
- All contacts appear to be missing, even though your phone’s Contacts app still shows them.
- You can receive messages or participate in a group, but WhatsApp does not show the person’s address-book name.
These symptoms do not necessarily mean the account is blocked or that WhatsApp has deleted your phone book. Contact-name visibility and the ability to exchange messages are separate. WhatsApp says that denying contact permission does not stop you receiving messages or taking part in groups, and you may still create contacts within WhatsApp that are not synchronized to the phone’s address book.

How WhatsApp contact access works
WhatsApp reads contact records from the accounts and address books that your phone exposes to it. The permission is not merely a one-time setup switch: the operating system can limit which records are visible, and a work account can impose another restriction. That is why a person can be present in the phone’s Contacts app but absent from WhatsApp.

On iPhone, Full Access lets WhatsApp use the address book, while limited access exposes only the contacts you selected. Limited access is useful when you do not want an app to see every entry, but it means a newly saved person must also be added to the approved selection. On Android, the Contacts permission controls whether WhatsApp can read the relevant contacts at all; the wording and location of that control vary by manufacturer.
These controls affect names and contact discovery, not whether another WhatsApp user can send you a message. A number-only chat can therefore be a permission result rather than a messaging failure.
Do this quick check before changing settings
- Open WhatsApp’s Chats tab.
- Search for the person’s name or complete phone number. On iPhone, pull down on the Chats list if the search field is hidden.
- If the person does not appear, open the Calls tab and search there as a second check.
- Open the person’s existing conversation, if one is available. A number in the header usually means WhatsApp can access the conversation but is not matching it to a visible phone contact.
Searching first tells you which problem you have. A successful search with a missing name points toward contact access or number formatting; no result anywhere points toward the saved number, account, or the person’s WhatsApp availability.

Fix a missing contact on iPhone
Give WhatsApp full or selected contact access
iPhone can give an app either broad access to the address book or access to only contacts you select. A contact that is outside the selected set will not appear to WhatsApp, even if it is saved correctly in Apple’s Contacts app.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security, then Contacts.
- Tap WhatsApp.
- Choose Full Access if you want WhatsApp to see the address book, or use the selected-contact option and add the missing person.
Apple documents this control as the general place to decide which apps can access contacts. If you use limited access, every newly created contact must be added to WhatsApp’s permitted selection; saving it in Contacts alone is not enough.
Check whether WhatsApp is missing or disabled in the permission screen
If WhatsApp does not appear in the Contacts permission list, or its control is unavailable, check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Screen Time restrictions can prevent changes to privacy permissions. Turn off the relevant restriction or allow privacy changes, then return to the Contacts screen.

Recheck the contact after changing access
Return to WhatsApp, open Chats, and search again. If the person is still absent, confirm that the phone entry contains the correct number and continue with the international-format and work-account checks below.
For a single missing person, compare the selected-contact list with the exact record in Contacts. If the contact was recently created, it may not have been included when limited access was configured. Add that record specifically, then search again rather than changing access for every contact.
Fix a missing contact on Android
Allow the Contacts permission
- Open Android Settings.
- Tap Apps (on some phones this is Apps & notifications).
- Select WhatsApp.
- Open Permissions, choose Contacts, and select Allow.
Google notes that manufacturers use different labels and layouts, so the same control may be under Permission manager or a similarly named menu. Searching Settings for “WhatsApp” or “Contacts” is often faster than following a model-specific path from another phone.

Then return to WhatsApp and search by the person’s name and number. If only one account’s contacts are absent, check whether that account is still syncing to the phone’s Contacts app before changing WhatsApp again.
Refresh WhatsApp’s contact list
If permission is already allowed but the list still reflects old information, WhatsApp documents a reset-and-refresh sequence for Android:
- Open Android’s account settings and remove the WhatsApp account listed there.
- Reopen WhatsApp.
- Start a new chat.
- Open More options and choose Refresh.
Account-setting locations vary by Android version and manufacturer. Read each confirmation prompt carefully and use WhatsApp’s Android Help Center instructions for the wording on your device. WhatsApp says this procedure does not delete WhatsApp messages, contacts, or other data from the phone. It also warns that resetting can remove entries from WhatsApp’s list when their information has already been deleted from the phone, so check the phone’s Contacts app before confirming.
Do not confuse a refresh with deleting your WhatsApp account
The documented Android procedure concerns the account entry used for contact access in Android settings. It is not an instruction to use WhatsApp’s in-app Delete my account command. If a screen offers to permanently delete the WhatsApp account, stop and verify that you are in the correct Android account-settings area.
Because Android settings differ, take note of the exact account entry you are removing and read every warning. The goal is to make WhatsApp rebuild its contact list, not to remove your profile, erase chats, or delete the records in the phone’s Contacts app.

Verify the saved number and country code
WhatsApp needs a number it can match to an account. For a contact in another country, edit the phone entry and save the complete international number, including the plus sign and country code. Do not rely on a local dialing format that works only inside your own country.
After saving the corrected number, close and reopen the new-chat picker or search by the full number. If the contact is still not found, check for a mistyped digit, an old number, or a duplicate entry with a different format. A conversation linked to an old number will not automatically become a conversation for a newly saved number.
Compare the number shown in WhatsApp with the number stored in Contacts digit by digit. A duplicate record can make one entry look correct while WhatsApp is matching another. Correct the existing record first, then search again; creating several near-identical entries makes it harder to tell which number is associated with the conversation.
Check work, school, and Exchange contacts
Contacts supplied by a work or school Exchange account can be subject to an administrator’s mobile-app policy. The entry may be visible in the phone’s Contacts app while WhatsApp is prevented from reading it.
Ask the Exchange administrator whether third-party apps are allowed to access that account’s contacts. If policy blocks access, changing WhatsApp’s local permission cannot override the organization’s restriction. You may need to save the person in a permitted personal contact account, if your organization’s rules allow that, or use the organization-approved directory instead.
This is especially relevant when personal contacts appear normally but every contact from one managed account is absent. The pattern points to the account policy rather than a damaged WhatsApp list. Do not bypass an employer’s rule by copying protected information into another account unless the organization explicitly permits it.
Why an existing chat can show a number instead of a name
WhatsApp can continue delivering messages even when it cannot read the matching address-book entry. This happens when contact permission was denied, limited access excludes the person, the number was saved under a different format, or the original contact was deleted.

A working conversation therefore proves only that the number can exchange WhatsApp messages. It does not prove that the same number is visible to the address-book integration. This distinction explains why a group participant can message you while their saved name remains unavailable.
When the contact is missing only from the new-chat list
A person may have a saved phone entry but no discoverable WhatsApp account on that number. Search by the full number and check an existing group or conversation before assuming the contact list is broken.
- If the number appears in a group, open the participant details and compare it with the saved entry.
- If an old chat exists, check whether the chat is tied to a previous number.
- If neither search finds the number, confirm with the person that the number is current and registered for WhatsApp.
These checks separate a local address-book problem from a number that is not currently associated with the service. They also prevent an unnecessary permission reset when the underlying issue is simply an outdated phone number.
If many or all contacts are missing
First open the phone’s Contacts app. If the records are missing there too, restore or resync the phone’s contact account using the phone’s own account settings before troubleshooting WhatsApp. WhatsApp cannot display an entry that the operating system no longer provides.
If the Contacts app is complete but WhatsApp is empty, check the app permission before attempting a refresh. On iPhone, confirm whether WhatsApp has Full Access or whether the selected set is empty or incomplete. On Android, confirm that Contacts is allowed. Only after those checks should you consider the Android reset-and-refresh procedure.
After moving to a new phone or restoring a backup, repeat the permission review. Privacy permissions can be configured differently on the replacement device, and an iPhone’s limited-contact selection does not automatically include every new record.
What not to do
- Do not erase all contacts to force a resynchronization; that can destroy the source data WhatsApp needs.
- Do not delete and reinstall WhatsApp as a first step. Reinstallation introduces backup and verification risks without correcting a restricted contact permission.
- Do not repeatedly remove accounts or approve prompts without reading them. Android account screens differ, and the documented reset can change which entries appear in WhatsApp.
- Do not assume that a number shown in a chat proves the phone contact is available to WhatsApp. Messaging can work while address-book access is blocked.
- Do not grant Full Access on iPhone automatically if limited access is intentional. Add the specific missing contact instead when that meets your privacy needs.
- Do not treat an Exchange policy as a handset malfunction. An administrator may need to change the policy, and local settings cannot override it.
A complete troubleshooting sequence
Use this order so that the least disruptive checks come first:
- Search the Chats tab by name and number; on iPhone, reveal the search field by pulling down if necessary.
- Search the Calls tab and inspect any existing conversation or group participant entry.
- Open the phone’s Contacts app and verify the entry, spelling, digits, and country code.
- On iPhone, review WhatsApp under Settings > Privacy & Security > Contacts and include the person in the selected set or grant Full Access.
- On Android, open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions > Contacts and choose Allow.
- On Android, if the list remains stale, follow WhatsApp’s account-removal and More options > Refresh sequence, checking every prompt.
- If the entry belongs to Exchange, ask the administrator whether the account policy blocks app access.
- Only after these checks investigate device-level restrictions such as Screen Time on iPhone or a manufacturer-specific Android permission manager.
At each stage, search again before moving on. If the contact appears after a permission change, you have identified the cause and do not need to perform the more disruptive reset steps.

How to prevent the problem from returning
- Save international numbers with the country code, especially for people who travel or use numbers from another country.
- Keep important contacts in an account that your phone and permitted apps can access consistently.
- When using iPhone limited contact access, add each new WhatsApp contact to the approved selection.
- Review WhatsApp’s Contacts permission after migrating to a new phone or restoring a backup.
- When a work account is involved, check the organization’s mobile-app policy before troubleshooting the handset.
- When replacing a number, update the existing contact record and verify the WhatsApp conversation rather than leaving an obsolete duplicate.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Escalate to Apple, your Android manufacturer, the Exchange administrator, or WhatsApp support when the permission control is permanently unavailable, the phone’s Contacts app itself is missing entries, or the number is correct but cannot be discovered from any WhatsApp search. Include the phone model, operating-system version, whether the contact is personal or work-managed, and which permission state you observed. Do not send a full address book or unrelated private chats when reporting the problem.
If an iPhone permission remains greyed out after checking Screen Time restrictions, follow Apple’s support guidance rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings. If Android’s account path does not match the documented sequence, use the device maker’s instructions and read the confirmation text before proceeding.
