One concrete example: the ffmpeg.wasm project FAQ documents a maximum input file size of 2 GB. That makes a size limit a plausible explanation if your compressor uses ffmpeg.wasm, but the compressor and error are unknown, so it does not establish the cause in your case.
Could 2.2 GB be too large for a browser video compressor?
It can be too large for a particular implementation. The ffmpeg.wasm FAQ says the project’s maximum input file size is 2 GB and describes this as a hard limit in WebAssembly. Since 2.2 GB is above that threshold, a compressor built on ffmpeg.wasm could fail before it finishes processing the file.

This is not a universal browser limit. The figure applies to ffmpeg.wasm as documented by that project; other compressors may use different browser-side code, process files on a remote server, or set their own upload limits. Without the compressor’s name and exact error, size is a reasonable lead, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Why the AVI extension does not settle the cause
AVI identifies a container format, not the particular video and audio codecs or streams inside the file. Two files ending in .avi can therefore contain different media data, and the extension alone cannot show whether a given compressor supports the file.

FFmpeg’s format documentation describes formats through their demuxers and muxers, each with its own handling. If the file imports but fails during decoding or conversion, codec or stream support may be involved. AVI by itself does not prove that the file is incompatible with browsers or that it caused the failure.
How to narrow down what happened
- Identify the compressor. Check its help page or technical details for the processing engine and maximum input size. If it identifies ffmpeg.wasm or states a 2 GB maximum, your file exceeds that documented limit.
- Note when it fails. A rejection during selection or import points toward an input or upload limit. A failure after processing starts could also involve codecs, metadata, memory, or device resources; the timing alone does not prove which one.
- Record the exact error and setup. The compressor name, browser, operating system, and full error message can distinguish a documented size ceiling from a tool-specific support problem. For a remote service, check its upload limit; for local browser processing, check its stated file-size and format support.
- Check the file’s actual streams. If the tool reports a codec or stream error, inspect the AVI’s contents with a media-information utility or try another tool that explicitly supports those streams. The
.avisuffix is not enough to identify them.
Would another browser-based approach fix it?
Not necessarily. WebCodecs gives web applications low-level video and audio encoding and decoding capabilities, including from dedicated workers, but it is not a complete file converter. An application still needs other components to demux media from a file and mux the encoded result into a container. Codec support also varies by browser and device, as explained in MDN’s WebCodecs documentation.

So a compressor using browser-native media APIs may avoid one implementation’s specific limit, but the API alone does not guarantee that it can read this AVI, handle its codecs, or process a file of this size.

ffmpeg -i input.avi output.mp4
This converts the container and media as needed for the output; it does not guarantee a smaller file. To target a smaller size, choose encoding settings that suit your size and quality goals. The result depends on the source and those settings, so there is no reliable size reduction to promise without examining the file and configuration.
FFmpeg runs locally when you use it on your own computer, unlike a service that uploads the file to a remote server. Check the service’s handling of uploads if you choose a server-based compressor; no privacy or performance comparison can be inferred just from the file size or the conversion command.
