A $20 old Blu-ray player can make movie watching feel deliberate again: choose a disc, put it in, and give one film your attention. That was the appeal of this inexpensive purchase—not a claim that used players generally cost $20, or that every old model will work with every disc and television.
Why I wanted a Blu-ray player again
Streaming makes it easy to browse endlessly, switch titles halfway through, or forget what I meant to watch. A disc asks for a smaller decision: choose a movie, take it off the shelf, and press play. I bought an old Blu-ray player for $20 to bring that kind of movie night back into reach.

The price is part of my story, not a guide to current used-player prices. What mattered was that the player gave me a way to watch films I already owned without turning the evening into another search through a screen full of options.

What physical media changed about watching
A disc makes the film itself feel like the plan. There is a case to choose and a finite collection to browse; once the movie starts, there is less temptation to keep scanning for something better. That small bit of friction can be a pleasure when the alternative is spending more time choosing than watching.

It also makes a personal collection visible. The movie is there whether or not a streaming service’s catalog changes, though an old player still has to support the particular disc. The experience is not automatically better for everyone: streaming is more convenient, while discs reward people who enjoy having a tangible collection and choosing a title on purpose.
Can an old Blu-ray player play Blu-rays, DVDs, and CDs?
Often, but the exact answer depends on the model. Sony’s US support guidance lists playback of BD-ROM and BD-ROM 3D movie discs, along with BD-R and BD-RE. It notes that BD-XL support is limited to some models from 2011 onward. For DVDs, Sony lists DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, and DVD-RAM movie discs; for music, it lists CD-R and CD-RW, while noting limitations for CD-ROM and Super Audio CD. The page was last modified March 21, 2023, and advises checking the player’s manual for supported file types. Sony’s disc compatibility guidance is a useful starting point, but the exact model manual is decisive.

- Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
- Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
- Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
- Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
Do not assume that a player reads every disc or file just because it has a Blu-ray logo. If you have a particular DVD, CD, recordable disc, or file on a USB drive in mind, check the specifications or manual for that model before buying.

Will the player connect to your television?
HDMI is the simplest modern route when both devices have HDMI terminals. Sony recommends HDMI for optimum picture quality when connecting a Blu-ray or DVD player to a television, while noting that terminals vary by model and region. Check the rear panel or manual before assuming an older machine has HDMI. See Sony’s connection guide for the basic setup.

If the player and television both have HDMI, connect them with an HDMI cable, select the corresponding input on the TV, and follow the player’s on-screen setup. More unusual arrangements—such as connecting through an audio system—can depend on the exact equipment and output settings. Panasonic’s DMP-BDT270 / DMP-BD903 / DMP-BD93 basic manual illustrates why the model-specific instructions matter; its product numbers are described as current as of December 2014. Panasonic also provides a guide to connecting a Blu-ray player or system to an external device.
Do Blu-ray discs have region codes?
They can. Sony UK’s support guidance describes Blu-ray regional codes as letters and says a player generally supports discs from its own region unless otherwise specified. That is a reason to check the exact player and the disc—especially for an imported title—rather than assume that a disc will play because its format is Blu-ray. Sony UK’s region-code guidance is a starting point, not a substitute for checking the specific product documentation.

What to check before buying a used unit
There is no single compatibility answer for every older player. Treat a used machine as an individual piece of equipment and confirm these details before handing over money:
- Exact model: Find the model number on the front, back, or underside, then look up its manual and supported disc types.
- Disc and region: Check that it supports the formats you own and that its region is compatible with your discs.
- TV connection: Confirm that the player and television share a usable input, such as HDMI, and that you have the cable needed to connect them.
- Remote and basic operation: Check that a remote is included or that the player’s controls are usable, and, if possible, test powering it on, opening the tray, and playing a disc.
Those checks do not guarantee the condition of a particular secondhand unit; they help catch common mismatches between an older player, a TV, and the discs you actually want to watch.
