1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA 3× leveraged crypto ETF generally targets three times its reference asset’s return for one trading day—not three times Bitcoin’s or Ether’s return over weeks or months. Because the fund resets its exposure and each day’s gain or loss applies to the fund’s then-current value, a sharp drop can leave it below its starting point even after the underlying asset recovers. The daily path, volatility, costs, and the fund’s actual reference exposure all matter.
Why a 3× ETF can lag a recovering coin
A daily leveraged ETF compounds a sequence of daily returns. If the fund loses value, later gains are earned from a smaller base. A recovery in Bitcoin or Ether therefore does not automatically restore the ETF to its earlier value.

The SEC explains that most leveraged and inverse ETFs reset daily and are designed to meet their stated objective on a daily basis. The reviewed ProShares Daily Target 3x Ether prospectus likewise says the fund does not seek its 3× objective over any period other than a day. A 3× daily target is not a promise to deliver three times the reference asset’s total return over a longer holding period. SEC Investor Bulletin; ProShares prospectus.

Two paths can end at the same benchmark value yet leave a daily-reset fund with different returns. The SEC warns that divergence can grow in volatile markets; “volatility decay” is a shorthand for one possible effect, not a guarantee that every leveraged fund will lose value. A smooth directional trend can produce a different result from a choppy path. SEC Investor Bulletin.

How a loss and recovery compound
A hypothetical 2× example from the SEC
The SEC’s illustration starts with an index and a 2× ETF each valued at $1,000. It is a hypothetical mechanism example, not a crypto result and not a simulation of a 3× fund.
| Day | Index move | Index value | 2× ETF move | ETF value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start | — | $1,000 | — | $1,000 |
| 1 | −10% | $900 | −20% | $800 |
| 2 | +10% | $990 | +20% of $800 | $960 |
The index finishes down 1%, while the ETF finishes down 4%, despite delivering twice the index’s return on each individual day. The second day’s 20% gain is calculated from $800, not the original $1,000. A later rise from a reduced base does not by itself erase an earlier loss. SEC Investor Bulletin.

Why “three times the period return” is the wrong calculation
In a simplified model, each day’s fund return is approximately the daily target multiple times that day’s benchmark return, and those fund returns then compound. Actual results also reflect expenses, financing and derivatives costs, tracking differences, and the specific exposure the fund uses. Multiplying Bitcoin’s or Ether’s total return for a month by three ignores the daily reset and changing fund value.
SEC examples show the scale of possible divergence
The SEC’s August 29, 2023 bulletin gives two examples spanning more than four months. These are not Bitcoin or Ether performance figures: the passage does not identify the indexes or funds.

| SEC example | Index result | Leveraged ETF result | Inverse ETF result |

| 3× daily leverage | around +8% | −53% | −90% for a 3× inverse ETF |
These regulator-published illustrations demonstrate how a daily objective can diverge sharply from an index’s multi-month return; they should not be read as predictions for a crypto fund. SEC Investor Bulletin.
“Crypto ETF” does not tell you what the fund tracks
Leveraged crypto funds do not all use the same benchmark or hold the same instruments. For example, the SEC-filed 2025 ProShares Daily Target 3x Ether prospectus describes a target tied to the Bloomberg Ethereum Index and says the fund does not invest directly in ether. A 2025 Direxion filing for Direxion Daily Bitcoin Bull 3X ETF describes seeking exposure to IBIT equal to 300% of fund assets. These are descriptions in the respective filings, not a guarantee that terms or listing status remain unchanged. ProShares prospectus; Direxion filing.

Before comparing a fund’s return with spot Bitcoin or Ether, check its current prospectus for the named reference asset or index and the method used to obtain exposure. A fund that references another exchange-traded product, an index, or derivatives can behave differently from spot crypto.

What to check in a fund’s current disclosures
- Reference: Identify the exact index, ETP, or other benchmark named in the fund objective.
- Target and reset: Confirm the stated multiple and that it applies to a single trading day.
- Exposure method: Check whether the fund uses derivatives or references another ETP; do not assume direct ownership of Bitcoin or Ether.
- Costs and risks: Review the latest prospectus for expenses, financing or derivative costs, tracking risks, and tax considerations. The SEC also points investors to FINRA’s Fund Analyzer for cost analysis: Investor.gov: Mutual Funds and ETFs.
- Holding period and market path: Consider that the same benchmark endpoint can yield different leveraged-fund results depending on the daily moves along the way.
The SEC cautions that leverage applied in an already speculative, volatile Bitcoin-futures market can magnify price moves, that a daily objective may not be met on every day, and that leveraged or inverse ETFs can have costs and tax consequences unlike traditional funds. Its bulletin represents SEC staff views, not a rule or regulation, and is general information rather than individualized investment advice. SEC Investor Bulletin.
