Official developer and platform descriptions point to a notable range of approaches, though they do not prove an industry-wide revolution.
What is changing about movement in games?
Movement is not a single feature that can be ranked by speed or freedom. In the examples announced or discussed in 2026, it serves distinct design goals: Tomb Raider ties traversal to Lara Croft’s identity; Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 describes movement as a controlled chain of combat transitions; Wuthering Waves presents traversal as part of exploring its world; Marathon emphasizes the cost of aggressive repositioning; and Gears of War: E-Day is rebuilding movement and combat around series pillars.

That variety is what makes the year feel quietly significant. The evidence supports a trend in design thinking, not a statistical claim that games across the industry have changed at a measurable rate. The sources are official descriptions and developer statements, not a representative survey or independent play testing.

How the games are approaching player movement
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis: movement as character
In a 20 July 2026 developer article, Crystal Dynamics framed traversal as central to Lara Croft’s identity. Game Director Raul Siqueira said the team wanted her movement to be “fluid and acrobatic in a way that only Lara Croft can move.” Design Director Jason Epps described the aim as movement that feels “graceful, fluid, and expressive.” The developers also describe a deliberate balance: the original design is intended to feel a little slower than modern games, while allowing players to chain traversal for speed and reach places faster. These are the creators’ goals, not an independent assessment of how the finished game feels.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: combat transitions with control
Activision’s multiplayer feature article, dated 21 August 2026, describes several mechanics intended to make movement responsive and create routes through the environment: Mantle Slide, Mantle Momentum, Mantle Steering, Supine Slide, Pipe Climb, and Fast Pipe Slide. The stated idea is not simply to accelerate every action. Mantle Momentum can preserve momentum until an obstacle is cleared; Mantle Steering lets a player aim or abort after a mantle begins. Pipe traversal adds vertical routes, while these transition options emphasize player control. The announced mechanics do not establish competitive impact or player preference.
A separate Xbox Wire article about the game’s movement technology and maps offers a second official perspective, including pipe climbing and new movement opportunities. It is another account of the same game, not a separate example of a broader industry trend.

Wuthering Waves: traversal as exploration
In its 26 March 2026 Partner Preview announcement, Xbox Wire describes Rover as able to soar, swing, slide, and travel quickly on a motorbike while exploring and fighting. Those options suggest movement designed to make the world itself a playground, rather than only to connect combat actions. The announcement does not establish how the options feel in play or whether they are available across all regions and platforms.
Marathon: mobility with a meaningful cost
Freedom to move quickly is not the only design goal. In a 31 March 2026 developer update, Bungie stated: “One of our core philosophies for Marathon is that rapid repositioning and aggression must always have a meaningful cost.” That principle treats mobility as part of tactical risk: a powerful way to change position should not necessarily be free. It is Bungie’s stated design philosophy, not evidence of how the balance works in a released build.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Gears of War: E-Day: movement rebuilt around series pillars
An Xbox Wire interview and podcast page dated 9 June 2026 describes The Coalition’s approach to Gears of War: E-Day as rebuilding movement and combat around the franchise’s pillars. That points to movement as part of a game’s core identity, but the available description does not specify mechanics, so it cannot support a more detailed comparison.
What these approaches have in common—and where they differ
They are easier to compare by purpose than by declaring one system “best.” The table summarizes the design intent described by the developers and platforms; it is not a ranking of how the games perform.

Why this is a low-key shift, not a proven revolution
These examples highlight a broader design question: should movement primarily create expression, combat agency, exploration, or tactical trade-offs? They also show why “more movement” is too simple a measure. Preserving momentum, adding vertical paths, allowing a player to steer or cancel a transition, and attaching a cost to aggression are different choices with different effects.

Nor do they establish how the announced designs will change before release or through patches. The careful conclusion is that developers are articulating varied, movement-centered design goals in 2026—not that every game has changed, or that a measurable industry-wide revolution has occurred.
