Many power-tool brands use 18V as the nominal voltage class for a family of cordless tools. Some products in the same class are labeled “20V MAX” because that figure describes maximum initial voltage, measured without a workload—not nominal voltage. The shared label makes a useful platform foundation, but it does not make batteries interchangeable across brands.
Why 18V shows up across so many tools
An 18V battery platform lets a manufacturer build a family of tools around compatible batteries and chargers. An owner who already has supported batteries may be able to buy another tool as a bare tool rather than add a duplicate battery and charger.

The platform can span different kinds of work. Bosch says its Professional 18V system covers applications including drilling, screwing, cutting and grinding, with batteries and chargers shared across tools in that system. BLACK+DECKER describes its POWERCONNECT platform as spanning power tools, lawn and garden, and home-cleaning products. These are examples of manufacturers’ own platform designs, not evidence that every brand chose 18V for the same reason.

Lithium-ion battery voltage changes with charge state, and manufacturers may label a battery class using different voltage conventions. DEWALT says its 20V MAX battery measures 20 volts at maximum initial voltage without a workload, while its nominal voltage is 18 volts. So “18V” and “20V MAX” can describe the same nominal class; the label alone does not establish that two batteries fit the same tool or perform identically.

Do not infer torque, cutting speed or overall tool power from the voltage label alone. Tool design, battery capacity, electronics, heat management, pack size and the intended task all matter. Bosch’s battery guidance likewise advises considering capacity, cooling and size alongside voltage. Its Professional 18V page says output of up to 2,000 W can be expected when its 18V tools are paired with an EXPERT battery; that is a Bosch-specific claim, not a general rating for 18V tools.
Does an 18V battery fit any 18V tool?
No. “18V” is a voltage class, not a universal connector or compatibility standard. Battery interfaces, electronics and charger requirements are specific to manufacturers’ platforms and sometimes to product generations. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact tool, battery and charger models before buying.

Compatibility claims need to stay within their stated scope. Bosch says its batteries and chargers work with tools in its Professional 18V System. Its AMPShare alliance extends compatibility to supported products from participating professional brands; neither claim means that all 18V batteries work with all 18V tools.
What adapters can—and cannot—do
A manufacturer-approved adapter may bridge particular generations of a platform, but it is not a universal solution. DEWALT says its 18V-to-20V adapter works with most DEWALT 18V tools and identifies exceptions, including FLEXVOLT batteries, several larger 20V MAX XR packs and specified legacy tools. DEWALT also says an 18V charger must not be used to charge a 20V MAX battery through the adapter. Verify the current compatibility guidance for the exact models before relying on an adapter.

Legacy-system availability can also change. In a September 7, 2021 announcement, DEWALT said it planned to phase out supply of legacy 18V NiCad batteries, with supply then estimated through March 2022, and recommended transitioning to 20V MAX. That announcement is historical context, not a guarantee of current replacement-pack stock.

- Compatibility: Confirm which exact tools, packs and chargers work together, and whether compatibility is limited to a brand, generation or alliance.
- Tool range: Check whether the platform includes the tools you need, including relevant outdoor or household products.
- Runtime: Amp-hour capacity is one factor in runtime; it is not the same thing as voltage or tool power.
- Weight and handling: Higher-capacity packs can be larger and heavier. Consider overhead work and long sessions as well as runtime.
- Heat and charging: Battery cooling and available charging options can affect working conditions and interruptions.
- Tool performance: Compare the specifications and suitability of the particular tool models for your tasks, rather than judging by voltage alone.
- Support for older platforms: For a legacy system, check current replacement-battery availability, service information and adapter restrictions. A past phase-out notice does not establish what is in stock today.
There is no single industry-wide explanation established here for why every manufacturer uses this voltage class. The practical point is that 18V is a common nominal platform label, while platform breadth and compatibility are specific to each manufacturer.
