His official character profile places him in the National Operations Department. The novels pair his investigations with the recurring character Saga Bauer, building both self-contained mysteries and longer personal storylines.
Who is Joona Linna?
Joona is an unconventional, persistent investigator whose empathy and concealed past shape how he approaches cases, according to his official author profile. He is a fictional character, not a real police officer. The series follows him as he investigates new crimes, with Saga Bauer returning across the books.

Who writes the Joona Linna books?
Lars Kepler is the shared pen name of Swedish authors Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril, a husband-and-wife writing team based in Stockholm, according to Penguin Random House. The authors say “Lars” pays homage to crime writer Stieg Larsson, while “Kepler” refers to Johannes Kepler. They describe writing collaboratively, exchanging and revising text rather than dividing a book by chapters or characters. They also say they research topics including forensic science, forensic medicine, interrogation psychology, and operational tactics; those are the authors’ descriptions of their process, not independent confirmation of the novels’ procedural accuracy.
What is the reading order?
For the English-language titles, read the series in this order. The official author archive lists the first nine, and the Penguin Random House catalog adds The Sleepwalker as the tenth; Cargo’s Dutch series page numbers ten localized installments. Titles and release timing can vary by market.

Can you read the books out of order?
Yes. Lars Kepler’s official FAQ says every book can be read as a standalone: each brings Joona a new case and explains its mystery by the end. Reading in order, however, lets you follow the longer story of Joona and Saga Bauer. Choose a standalone if you want a resolved case without prior reading; start with The Hypnotist if you want the ongoing character arcs from their beginning.

Penguin Random House reports more than twenty million copies sold in forty languages, but its author page does not give a reporting year. HarperReach reports more than twelve million copies in forty languages. These are publisher-reported figures, not a reconciled audited total, so they should not be treated as a single precise sales count.
