Then choose a drawing model, a way to represent time, and an output strategy that fit those requirements. SVG provides a plausible vector foundation; frame-based video tools and JSON animation formats offer useful design references, but none dictates the right syntax or runtime for your project.
Decide what the language is for before settling its syntax
A language for beginners making explainers has different priorities from a programmable toolkit for motion designers or a data format consumed by a renderer. Write down the intended author, the expected workflow, and the deliverables before choosing keywords, braces, or a scripting API.

- Author: Is the primary user a non-programmer, a developer, or an animator comfortable with both code and visual tools?
- Workflow: Will authors describe scenes from scratch, import existing vector artwork, or combine both?
- Output: Must a project produce animated SVG, rendered video, or both? Name the target players and environments rather than assuming one format works everywhere.
- Execution: Does the language need to run in a browser, as a command-line renderer, or in another environment?
- Reproducibility: Should a given project reliably produce the same image at each frame, and what rules will govern fonts, external assets, and rendering?
These are product choices, not questions settled by an animation format. In particular, the available documentation does not establish which audience or syntax is best for this project.

Whiteboard animation is not just an image appearing on screen: the order and manner in which a drawing is revealed often carry the action. Represent that behavior explicitly instead of leaving it to incidental details in a renderer.

Choose how artwork enters a scene
You can define shapes as native primitives, accept imported SVG paths, or support both. Primitives make common shapes easier to author and validate; imported paths give artists a route for using existing vector work. If the language supports both, specify how each enters the same scene model.
SVG is a reasonable foundation to evaluate. MDN’s SVG animation guide describes SMIL-style animation for changes to attributes, transforms, colors, and motion along a path. The SVG Working Group’s animation editor’s draft dated 14 September 2025 also describes scripting access to attributes and styles and DOM interfaces for animation. That document is a draft, not a final stable specification; verify the support and behavior of the actual SVG viewers you intend to target.

For each draw or reveal operation, decide whether authors can control:

- Which path is drawn, and where its drawing begins and ends.
- The direction in which it is revealed, including whether the authored path direction is respected or can be reversed.
- Its place in the drawing order and its relationship to other paths.
- When it starts, how long it takes, and whether the scene includes pauses or overlaps.
SVG animation mechanisms demonstrate that paths and other properties can be animated; they do not prescribe a whiteboard-specific language or decide how these controls should appear in your syntax. Make the rules part of your own scene model so authors can reason about the result independently of a particular output renderer.
Choose a time model that matches authoring and rendering
Time can be authored in seconds or in frames. A seconds-first interface can read naturally for an editor planning a voiceover; a frame-based interface can make exact frame evaluation explicit. Either choice needs a defined conversion rule if the project supports both.
Also decide how actions compose. A simple linear sequence is easy to inspect, while nested sequences can group reusable sections. Event-driven triggers or a free-form timeline offer other models, but add their own rules for ordering and evaluation. Select the smallest model that supports the work your authors actually need.

Remotion’s documentation offers a useful programmatic-video reference: its APIs include current-frame access, interpolation, and sequences. Its path documentation also illustrates SVG path operations and integrations with animation systems. Treat these as examples of design axes, not evidence that the same abstractions or APIs are right for a separate language; check current documentation and package versions if you build on Remotion.

A direct renderer gives you control over the language’s semantics and output, but couples the language to the renderers and formats you implement. An intermediate representation can separate author-facing syntax from rendering targets, at the cost of defining and maintaining another layer.
Lottie is one existing data-first reference. Its official documentation describes it as a JSON-based format for animated vector graphics and documents an Animation object. But the Lottie specification explicitly describes itself as a work in progress, and the documented subset consists of features approved by the community. Do not promise broad compatibility based on the format name alone: check the current specification and the behavior of the target players against the features your language needs.

Before choosing an export target, list the features your language must preserve—especially path reveals, timing, grouping, and any interactions—and compare those requirements with the target’s actual capabilities. If the needed behavior does not map cleanly, keep the language’s own model authoritative and define precisely what an export can and cannot retain.

If the language produces video or supports frame-by-frame rendering, make evaluation rules explicit. A renderer should be able to determine what a given frame contains from the project, the frame or time value, and the declared assets and settings—not from hidden state that changes between renders.
- Define how duration, frame rate, and frame numbering relate, including what happens at the final frame.
- Specify how fonts and external assets are located and what happens when one is unavailable.
- Clarify whether animations are evaluated from an absolute time or by advancing mutable state.
- Test the same project on each supported renderer and platform before claiming consistent output.
Remotion’s frame-oriented APIs show one way to organize programmatic video around a current frame. The cited documentation does not establish performance or cross-platform determinism for your implementation; those require choices and evidence from your own renderer.

Build the smallest useful language, then validate its boundaries
Once the user, scene, timing, and output requirements are clear, choose a surface syntax that exposes those concepts without making routine animations cumbersome. A beginner-friendly declarative language, a general-purpose scripting API, and a data-first scene format solve different problems. There is no basis here for declaring one universally superior.
Prototype a small animation that includes several paths, a deliberate drawing order, a pause, and a final reveal. Use it to test whether authors can predict the result, whether the time model is unambiguous, and whether the chosen output preserves the intended sequence. Then test an imported SVG and a missing asset to expose assumptions the simplest scene will not reveal. These are validation steps for your own design, not claims about performance or compatibility established by the format examples.
