White Dwarfs vs. Neutron Stars: How Their Mass Limits and Magnetic Fields Differ

White dwarfs are limited by electron degeneracy pressure near 1.4 solar masses. Neutron-star limits depend on the dense-matter equation of state, with a 2025 model inferring about 2.3 solar masses. Their magnetic fields also differ: white dwarfs span a broad range, while magnetars reach roughly 10^15 gauss.

White dwarfs and neutron stars are both compact stellar remnants, but their limits come from different physics. A white dwarf is supported mainly by electron degeneracy pressure and has a familiar Chandrasekhar limit of about 1.4 times the Sun’s mass. A neutron star is supported by ultra-dense matter whose pressure depends on an incompletely known equation of state, so its maximum mass is model-dependent. A 2025 NASA/HEASARC analysis inferred a maximum near 2.3 solar masses under its assumptions, while NASA has reported an observed neutron star, PSR J0740+6620, at about 2.1 solar masses.

Magnetic fields show a similar contrast. White dwarfs can be magnetic across a very broad range, whereas neutron stars include magnetars with estimated fields near 1015 gauss. Neither class has one field strength that represents every member.

White dwarfs and neutron stars at a glance

The two objects are remnants of stars, but they occupy different density regimes and are held up by different forms of pressure. The numbers often quoted for them also describe different kinds of evidence: a theoretical stability limit for white dwarfs, a model-inferred bound for neutron stars, and a measured mass for one particularly heavy neutron star.

Property White dwarf Neutron star
Primary support against gravity Electron degeneracy pressure; electrons become increasingly relativistic as mass rises Pressure of ultra-dense matter, described by an uncertain equation of state
Key mass figure About 1.4 solar masses, the Chandrasekhar limit in the standard white-dwarf model (NASA, 2010) About 2.3 solar masses as a maximum inferred by a 2025 NASA/HEASARC NICER-related analysis under its stated assumptions
Observed high-mass example The 1.4-solar-mass value is a stability limit, not a typical measured remnant mass PSR J0740+6620 has a reported mass of roughly 2.1 solar masses (NASA, 2021)
Magnetic-field picture Detected fields span more than four orders of magnitude in the survey literature summarized by a 1995 NASA technical record; a cited weak-field measurement was about 85 kilogauss Ordinary neutron stars can power pulsar emission; magnetars are an extreme subclass with estimated fields around 1015 gauss (NASA)

The table should not be read as a direct “which is bigger?” contest. The white-dwarf figure is a long-established theoretical threshold, the 2.3-solar-mass neutron-star value is an inference tied to one analysis, and the 2.1-solar-mass value is the mass of a particular observed object.

What the white-dwarf mass limit actually means

Electron degeneracy provides the support

A white dwarf is the compact remnant left when a star has exhausted the fuel needed for ordinary nuclear burning and shed its outer layers. Gravity compresses the remaining matter until the electrons occupy nearly all available low-energy quantum states. The resulting electron degeneracy pressure does not depend on the remnant continuing to burn fuel; it comes from quantum mechanics.

Adding mass makes the star more compact and pushes the electrons toward relativistic speeds. In the standard idealized treatment, the way relativistic electron degeneracy pressure scales with density means that increasing mass eventually stops producing a stable increase in radius and support. That transition defines the Chandrasekhar limit.

The Chandrasekhar limit is about 1.4 solar masses

NASA’s “White Dwarfs” explainer, last modified in December 2010, gives the familiar limit as approximately 1.4 times the Sun’s mass. It is the approximate upper mass for a stable white dwarf in the standard picture, not a guarantee that every remnant below that value behaves identically and not a claim that every white dwarf is close to it.

Near the limit, details that are often omitted in short explanations become important:

  • Composition: The balance depends on the mixture of nuclei and electrons in the remnant.
  • Accretion: A white dwarf in a binary system can gain matter. The added mass changes its structure and can trigger a very different outcome from an isolated cooling remnant.
  • Rotation: Rotation alters the support against gravity, so a rotating object cannot be interpreted with the simplest non-rotating limit without qualification.
  • Binary evolution: Mergers, mass transfer and the timing of envelope loss influence whether a remnant remains a white dwarf or undergoes a later explosive or collapse event.

For those reasons, “1.4 solar masses” is best used as a stability benchmark for the white-dwarf remnant, not as a precise switch that applies independently of its history.

Do not confuse the remnant mass with the star’s birth mass

The Chandrasekhar limit concerns the mass of the compact remnant. It does not say that the original star formed with 1.4 solar masses. A star can begin with substantially more mass, lose most of it during its evolution, and leave a white dwarf whose final mass is well below the limit. Any comparison that calls 1.4 solar masses a white dwarf’s “initial mass” is mixing two different stages of stellar evolution.

Why neutron stars do not have one settled mass limit

The equation of state controls the maximum

Neutron stars compress a stellar core far beyond the densities found in ordinary matter. Their support comes from the pressure produced by that ultra-dense material, including the interactions among particles at densities that laboratory experiments cannot reproduce throughout a star. The relationship between density and pressure is called the equation of state (EOS).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Different plausible equations of state predict different radii, internal compositions and maximum masses. Astronomers therefore cannot quote a single neutron-star cutoff with the same status as the standard Chandrasekhar value. Mass and radius observations rule out some EOS models and favor others, but the upper mass remains an inference from the surviving models.

What the 2025 NASA/HEASARC result says

A NASA/HEASARC summary of a 2025 NICER-related EOS analysis reports an inferred maximum supported neutron-star mass of about 2.3 solar masses under that analysis’s assumptions. This is a model result, not a direct observation of a star that sits at a universal edge. The number should be quoted with its date and source because a different EOS analysis, or new observations, can move the inferred bound.

The result illustrates why the question “Is there a mass limit for neutron stars like there is for white dwarfs?”—the wording preserved in a NASA public astronomy Q&A—needs a qualified answer. Neutron stars do have a maximum mass in any chosen physical model: beyond it, no stable neutron-star configuration exists. What is unsettled is the exact value of that maximum in nature.

A massive observed star is not the same as the theoretical maximum

NASA’s April 17, 2021 NICER report gave PSR J0740+6620 a mass of approximately 2.1 solar masses. This is an observational constraint from one object. It demonstrates that the neutron-star EOS must support at least a star in that mass range, within the measurement’s uncertainty; it does not establish that 2.1 solar masses is the upper limit, nor that every neutron star can reach it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2.1 and 2.3 figures are therefore compatible. The first describes a measured, unusually massive neutron star. The second is a model-inferred maximum from a later analysis. A maximum must be at least as high as the mass of a stable object that has actually been observed, but the gap between an observed example and the predicted endpoint is where EOS uncertainty remains.

How the magnetic fields differ

White-dwarf magnetism is a broad population, not a single value

White dwarfs are sometimes described as non-magnetic because many introductory examples focus on gravity and degeneracy pressure. In reality, some have measurable magnetic fields, and the strengths are diverse. A NASA Technical Reports Server record from 1995 summarizes survey literature in which detected white-dwarf fields covered more than four orders of magnitude. The same record cites a weak-field measurement of about 85 kilogauss.

“More than four orders of magnitude” means the survey detections extended across a factor of at least ten thousand from the low end to the high end represented in that literature. It does not supply a modern population average, and it does not justify assigning one field strength to all white dwarfs. The record is survey-era evidence, so it should be treated as historical context rather than a current, complete census.

Magnetism can affect how material flows in a binary system, how an accretion column forms and how radiation is polarized. Those effects make a field observable, but they do not replace the degeneracy-pressure explanation for the white dwarf’s overall mass support.

Neutron stars include the magnetar extreme

Neutron-star fields can be powerful enough to shape the behavior of charged particles and produce the coherent emission associated with pulsars. Magnetars are an exceptional high-field subclass. NASA’s magnetar explainer gives an estimated field scale of roughly 1015 gauss.

That value is an estimate for the magnetar extreme, not a field strength shared by every neutron star. A neutron star’s observed activity depends on its field geometry, rotation, age and environment. A pulsar and a magnetar are both neutron stars, but they need not have the same magnetic intensity or produce the same signals.

Why a simple field-strength ranking is misleading

It is tempting to conclude that neutron stars are “more magnetic” than white dwarfs because 1015 gauss is so large. The comparison is directionally useful only when the categories are stated: magnetars occupy the extreme end of the neutron-star distribution, while white dwarfs show a wide range that includes weak fields. The available evidence does not provide one directly comparable, modern population-average field for both classes, so a precise ratio would overstate what is known.

Mass limit and magnetic field are related only indirectly

Both mass and magnetism reflect the remnant’s history, but neither field strength nor magnetic activity can be substituted for a mass measurement. The mass limit is set by whether pressure can balance gravity. A magnetic field can influence the motion of charged matter and the signals we detect, yet the field is not the primary support mechanism in the standard white-dwarf or neutron-star structure described here.

Conversely, the same compactness that makes neutron stars extreme objects affects how their fields and rotation manifest to an observer. That is a connection in the observable behavior, not evidence that one universal magnetic threshold determines the maximum mass.

How to read claims about these objects

When a news story, textbook or social-media post presents a number, identify what kind of number it is before comparing it with another:

  1. Classify the quantity. Is it a theoretical limit, a model-inferred bound, an estimate for a subclass, or a measured property of one object?
  2. Check the date and source. The white-dwarf educational value comes from a 2010 NASA explanation; the neutron-star maximum cited here comes from a 2025 NICER-related summary; the PSR J0740+6620 mass was reported by NASA in 2021.
  3. Keep the object category intact. “Neutron star” includes ordinary pulsars and magnetars. “White dwarf” includes magnetic and apparently non-magnetic remnants.
  4. Carry the assumptions with the figure. The 2.3-solar-mass value depends on an EOS analysis. The 1015-gauss value describes a magnetar-scale estimate. The more-than-four-orders-of-magnitude white-dwarf range comes from older survey literature.
  5. Separate formation from final state. A progenitor’s initial mass and a remnant’s final mass answer different questions.

Common misconceptions and their corrections

“Every white dwarf is close to 1.4 solar masses.”

No. About 1.4 solar masses is the approximate upper stability limit in the standard model. Most remnants need not be near that boundary, and their histories determine their final masses.

“A 2.3-solar-mass neutron star has been weighed directly.”

No. The 2.3-solar-mass figure is an inferred maximum from a 2025 EOS analysis. The approximately 2.1-solar-mass PSR J0740+6620 is an observed massive example, not the same claim.

“White dwarfs have no magnetic fields.”

Some do. The NASA survey synopsis reports detections spanning more than four orders of magnitude and includes an approximately 85-kilogauss weak-field measurement. The evidence does not support one representative field for the whole population.

“Magnetar fields prove that magnetic pressure holds up neutron stars.”

Magnetar fields are central to their extreme emissions and particle behavior, but the mass-support question concerns the pressure of ultra-dense matter and its equation of state. The two issues should not be conflated.

What remains uncertain

The central white-dwarf threshold is comparatively stable as a teaching result, although real outcomes near it depend on composition, rotation, accretion and binary evolution. Neutron-star interiors are less settled: measuring masses and radii narrows the EOS possibilities, but no observation has turned the model-dependent maximum into a universal constant.

Magnetic-field comparisons have a similar evidence boundary. The cited white-dwarf range comes from a 1995 technical-record summary, while the magnetar value is an estimated extreme. Those sources establish that both classes can be magnetic and that magnetars are extraordinarily strong-field objects; they do not establish a single current population ratio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for the comparison

A white dwarf reaches its familiar limit when relativistic electron degeneracy can no longer provide stable support, at approximately 1.4 solar masses in the standard Chandrasekhar picture. A neutron star’s endpoint is set by the unknown details of ultra-dense matter: NASA’s 2025 summary places one model’s inferred maximum near 2.3 solar masses, while the roughly 2.1-solar-mass PSR J0740+6620 shows that nature produces neutron stars at least that heavy. Magnetically, white dwarfs range widely, whereas magnetars represent the neutron-star extreme near 1015 gauss. The scientifically honest comparison is therefore one of different support mechanisms, different kinds of mass evidence and broad magnetic populations—not two objects with single, directly interchangeable numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Chandrasekhar limit the mass of the star that becomes a white dwarf?

No. It is the approximate upper stability limit for the white-dwarf remnant, about 1.4 solar masses in the standard model. The progenitor star can have a different, generally larger initial mass and lose material before the remnant forms.

Could future observations change the quoted neutron-star maximum?

Yes. The approximately 2.3-solar-mass value is inferred from a 2025 equation-of-state analysis. Better mass-radius measurements or a revised model of ultra-dense matter could change the allowed maximum.

Are all magnetized neutron stars magnetars?

No. Magnetars are a high-field subclass of neutron stars. Other neutron stars, including pulsars, can have strong fields without reaching the magnetar-scale estimate of about 10^15 gauss.
