What a Zigbee coordinator does—and what to choose first
A coordinator is the radio bridge between Home Assistant and your Zigbee devices. Home Assistant’s ZHA integration supports compatible coordinators; Zigbee2MQTT is a separate software route with its own adapter and firmware requirements. The same USB adapter is not automatically configured or interchangeable across both.

Start with these decisions:
- New ZHA network: choose Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2, the current official recommendation.
- Zigbee2MQTT: confirm that the exact adapter model and its firmware are supported and that you can apply the required adapter settings.
- Existing network: check backup and migration options before replacing the coordinator.
- Home Assistant Yellow: check its built-in Zigbee radio before buying a USB adapter. Home Assistant Green has no built-in Zigbee radio, so it needs a compatible coordinator for ZHA.

These are compatibility and setup distinctions, not a performance ranking. The official documentation cited here does not provide controlled head-to-head measurements of range, reliability, or maximum network size.
Which adapter fits your Home Assistant setup?
For a new ZHA network: Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2
Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation explicitly recommends the Connect ZBT-2 when setting up a new Zigbee network. Home Assistant describes its official hardware as made by Nabu Casa with the Home Assistant team. The older Connect ZBT-1 has been discontinued and replaced by ZBT-2, but remains supported for people who already own one.

If you intend to use Zigbee2MQTT instead, verify the current adapter configuration for the ZBT-2’s EmberZNet family. Home Assistant’s ZHA recommendation does not mean every integration will configure the adapter the same way.
For a third-party adapter: distinguish SONOFF E from P
The ZBDongle-E and ZBDongle-P are different radios, not revisions that can be treated as identical. The E uses Silicon Labs EFR32MG21 with EmberZNet; the P uses Texas Instruments CC2652P with zStack. Home Assistant lists both as known ZHA-compatible choices. SONOFF provides setup guidance for the E with ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT.

Before purchase or firmware changes, match the exact suffix to the instructions for your integration. A firmware image or adapter setting intended for one radio family should not be assumed to apply to the other.

Home Assistant Yellow includes a Zigbee radio. Home Assistant Green does not, so Green users need an external adapter for ZHA. Check the hardware documentation for your hub and configuration before buying: an additional USB coordinator may be unnecessary if your setup already has an appropriate radio.

Starting a network versus replacing a coordinator
A new network and a coordinator migration are different jobs. When replacing a radio, first find out whether you can restore a coordinator backup and whether your chosen software supports that adapter’s backup format. Zigbee2MQTT says coordinator backup is currently supported only for zStack- and EmberZNet-based adapters, and warns that migration may require repairing devices in some cases.
SONOFF’s ZHA instructions describe restoring a previous network backup when replacing a coordinator. The available choices depend on whether you want to preserve an existing network or erase it and create a new one:

- Preserve the existing network: use the applicable network restoration procedure and backup for the integration and adapter involved.
- Start fresh: erase the prior network and create a new one, then add devices to that network.
- Before disconnecting the old coordinator: check the software’s current backup and migration instructions. Do not assume that changing the USB radio alone transfers the network.
Set up the adapter in ZHA
- Connect the compatible coordinator to the Home Assistant host. If the adapter is plugged directly into a computer or hub, consider moving it away from the host with a USB extension cable.
- In Home Assistant, open Settings > Devices & services and add the Zigbee Home Automation integration.
- Select the detected serial device when prompted.
- Allow ZHA to detect the radio type. If automatic detection does not work, manually select the radio protocol that matches the adapter.
Successful detection does not guarantee that every Zigbee device will work without additional steps. Home Assistant does not publish an official list of every device that works out of the box with ZHA, and some models may require specific troubleshooting.

Set up and troubleshoot a Zigbee2MQTT adapter
Check Zigbee2MQTT’s supported-adapter instructions for the exact model, adapter family, firmware prerequisites, and settings. Confirm that coordinator firmware is installed; firmware that turns a coordinator into a router is not a substitute for coordinator firmware.

If Zigbee2MQTT will not start or cannot communicate with the radio, check these causes:
- The serial path is stale or points to the wrong device.
- The firmware or adapter settings do not match the coordinator model.
- Another integration, such as ZHA, is already using the same adapter.
- The USB connection, power supply, or nearby radio interference is disrupting communication.
- A Wi-Fi serial-over-IP connection is unstable. If a remote coordinator connection is necessary, Zigbee2MQTT prefers wired Ethernet over Wi-Fi.
USB placement can matter as much as the dongle
A coordinator plugged directly into a computer may be close to electronics and other transmitters that interfere with its radio. Zigbee2MQTT says a 50 cm USB extension cable can be enough to reduce this interference. Treat that as placement advice, not a guaranteed coverage increase: the sources cited here establish no universal coverage radius for these adapters.
Keep the radio away from the host and nearby sources of interference where practical, and secure the extension so the adapter is not under strain. If communication problems persist, test placement and the USB connection before assuming the coordinator is defective.

Choosing a supported coordinator is only one part of a Zigbee setup. Compatibility can depend on the integration, radio firmware, and the device model. Home Assistant says there is no official out-of-the-box compatibility list for all ZHA devices; when a device does not pair or expose the expected features, look for model-specific troubleshooting rather than assuming a different dongle will solve it.
