Can you play music from a phone through a Yamaha digital piano?
Yes, on models with Bluetooth audio. Pair a compatible smart device with the piano, then play audio from the device so it comes through the instrument’s speakers. Yamaha describes this use for the P-145BT and P-525; its P-Series overview also lists Bluetooth audio for the P-225. The feature is useful for playing along with songs, but the cited product information does not compare audio quality or connection latency.

What is the difference between Bluetooth audio and Bluetooth MIDI?
Bluetooth audio is for listening
Audio sends sound from a phone or other smart device to the piano’s speakers. It does not, by itself, make an app communicate with the piano’s keys or controls.
Bluetooth MIDI is for musical data
MIDI transmits performance and control data rather than a finished audio stream. It can let an app communicate with an instrument. Yamaha identifies Bluetooth MIDI on the P-525 and describes it as the wireless connection for Smart Pianist.

Yamaha’s P-525 Owner’s Manual treats the two connections separately: Smart Pianist requires the Bluetooth MIDI connection, and Bluetooth Audio is an additional connection when playing audio through the app. The manual also describes USB for transmitting audio and MIDI. These instructions apply to the P-525; do not assume the same procedure or features on another model.

No. App compatibility and built-in Bluetooth are separate questions. Yamaha’s Smart Pianist compatibility information says connection methods vary by instrument and can include USB or optional wireless equipment. Check the connection method for the exact model rather than inferring wireless support from an app-compatibility listing.

How should you choose between the models?
- Choose the P-145BT if your priority is a portable piano with built-in Bluetooth audio for phone playback. Yamaha also lists USB to HOST MIDI and audio support and Smart Pianist app support.
- Consider the P-225 if you want another portable option with Bluetooth audio. The cited Yamaha overview does not establish Bluetooth MIDI for this model.
- Choose the P-525 for both listed Bluetooth functions if you specifically need phone audio playback and Bluetooth MIDI for wireless Smart Pianist use.
These are feature distinctions, not rankings of sound, action, durability, or value; the cited Yamaha materials do not provide comparative tests for those qualities.

- Open the official product page and specification for your country or region. Yamaha notes regional variation, and the USA listings do not establish local availability.
- Confirm whether the model specification says Bluetooth audio, Bluetooth MIDI, or both. Do not treat the word “Bluetooth” as enough to identify the function.
- If you plan to use Smart Pianist, check the app’s compatibility details and the connection method for your particular instrument.
- Check accessories against the selected model. Yamaha’s P-145BT specification lists separately sold headphones, stands, pedals, footswitches, a keyboard bag, a power adaptor, and a wireless MIDI adaptor, but it does not establish that every listed item fits every Yamaha digital piano.
