Change the settings that determine what reaches your wrist, when the display stays visible, which health sensors run continuously, and when the watch stays quiet. Start in Mi Fitness with a small notification list, decide whether you need Always-on display (AOD), enable only the health monitoring you will actually use, then configure Do Not Disturb (DND) and vibration. This order makes the main trade-off clear: more information available at a glance generally means more battery consumption.
Menu names and synchronization behavior can vary with watch firmware, Mi Fitness version, phone platform and region. The paths below follow Xiaomi’s global Watch S5 46mm FAQ; if a label differs, update both the app and watch before troubleshooting.

What to change first: a practical priority order
There is no single best Xiaomi Watch S5 configuration. A commuter who must not miss a call needs different alerts from someone who wants a quiet watch for meetings, while an athlete may accept shorter runtime for continuous sensor data. Use this order to establish a sensible baseline:
- Notifications: choose which phone apps can interrupt you and whether an alert wakes the screen.
- Display: decide whether AOD and a longer screen timeout justify their battery cost.
- Health monitoring: turn on the measurements that answer a real need rather than enabling every sensor by default.
- Quiet hours: configure DND, silent mode, volume and vibration for work, sleep and other routines.
- Quick controls and permissions: keep everyday toggles accessible, but remember that phone permissions cannot be fixed from the watch.
After using this baseline for a day, change one setting at a time. That makes it easier to identify which feature is responsible for extra interruptions or faster battery drain.

1. Select only the notifications you want on your wrist
Notification delivery requires two configurations: the watch must be allowed to mirror selected apps in Mi Fitness, and the phone must allow those apps and Mi Fitness to operate in the background. On the watch, Xiaomi says the default alert is vibration without lighting the display.
Set app notifications in Mi Fitness
- Open Mi Fitness on the phone.
- Tap Device.
- Open Notifications and calls, then App notifications.
- Enable notification mirroring or select individual apps.
- Begin with time-sensitive apps such as calls, messages, calendars or a work-security app; add less urgent apps only if you find you need them.
This selective approach reduces wrist interruptions without silencing the phone. The watch can optionally Wake screen when notified, which is useful when you need to read an alert without raising your wrist, but it increases screen activity. Notify only when worn can prevent alerts while the watch is off your wrist.
Check the phone-side permissions
Allow notifications for each chosen app in the phone’s own Settings app. Mi Fitness also needs notification access and permission to run in the background. Android manufacturers use different names for unrestricted battery use, autostart and background activity, so look for those controls if alerts stop when the phone is idle.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →On an iPhone, Xiaomi documents an additional Bluetooth permission: open the watch entry in Settings > Bluetooth and enable Share System Notifications. In iOS, also allow Mi Fitness notifications and Background App Refresh. These requirements are described in Xiaomi’s Watch S5 46mm FAQ.
If an expected alert does not arrive
- Confirm the app is enabled under Mi Fitness > Device > Notifications and calls > App notifications.
- Check that the phone app itself is permitted to send notifications.
- Recheck Mi Fitness notification, Bluetooth and background permissions.
- On Android, remove Mi Fitness from aggressive battery-management or sleeping-app lists where appropriate.
- On iPhone, verify Share System Notifications and Background App Refresh.
- Keep the phone and watch connected over Bluetooth, then restart Mi Fitness if the list appears stale.
Xiaomi states that notification quick replies are not supported on the Watch S5, so an incoming message can be read but not answered with a watch-side canned response.

2. Set display wake, AOD and timeout around your routine
For most owners, leave AOD off initially and use wrist raise or a tap to check the time. Turn AOD on only when constant glanceability is worth the shorter runtime, and schedule it for the hours you actually need.
Configure Always-on display
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Select Always-on display.
- Choose an always-on option or schedule it. Xiaomi’s stated default scheduled window is 08:00–22:00.
AOD can use a watch-face-specific always-on design or a system default. Xiaomi warns that it shortens battery life, may switch off when the watch is removed and is disabled when sleep is detected. Therefore, an overnight AOD schedule does not guarantee an illuminated display during detected sleep.
Adjust screen auto-lock and wake behavior
Screen auto-lock can be set from 5 to 60 seconds; Xiaomi lists 5 seconds as the default. A short timeout conserves power and prevents accidental touches. A longer timeout helps when reading a workout metric or message without repeatedly touching the screen. Pair the timeout with your notification choice: if notifications already wake the screen, a long timeout may add unnecessary drain.
The control center offers a quick Raise to wake toggle. Use it when you want the screen available without AOD, and disable it if frequent arm movement causes unwanted wake-ups.
3. Enable health monitoring deliberately
The Watch S5 can collect more data than every owner needs. Enable a function when you have a clear use for its trend information, and remember that smartwatch measurements are wellness features, not a medical diagnosis.

Heart rate
In the heart-rate settings, Xiaomi labels the continuous option Continuous monitoring (Smart). Continuous sampling can make trends and exercise readings more available, but it uses additional power. If you mainly check heart rate during workouts, leave continuous monitoring off and use workout-specific measurements instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStress
Stress settings include All-day monitoring. This is useful if you intend to review changes throughout the day; it is unnecessary if you never consult stress trends. Enabling it adds sensor work and therefore contributes to battery use.
Blood oxygen (SpO₂)
SpO₂ settings provide All-day tracking. Turn it on only if continuous oxygen-saturation trends are relevant to your personal tracking plan. Spot checks may be a better compromise for owners prioritizing runtime.
Sleep
Sleep settings include Advanced monitoring. Choose it when detailed sleep-stage or breathing-related trend information matters to you, and expect more overnight monitoring activity than with basic sleep detection.
Xiaomi says continuous sensor functions consume extra battery and may be switched off automatically when the watch reaches a low-battery state. After charging or restarting, check the settings and manually re-enable the functions you still want; do not assume a low-power shutdown restored every previous choice.

4. Configure DND, silent mode and sound levels
Turn on watch-side Do Not Disturb
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Sound and vibration.
- Select DND.
- Choose the immediate mode or schedule available on your software.
Watch-only DND works directly on the watch. Synchronizing DND with a phone is conditional: Xiaomi supports it only with specified Xiaomi phone, watch, Mi Fitness and software combinations. On another phone or an older software version, a phone schedule may not mirror to the watch. If synchronization is missing, use the watch’s own DND control or update the phone, Mi Fitness and watch firmware before trying again.
Use silent mode when vibration is enough
Silent mode changes incoming calls, app notifications and reminders to vibration. It is a useful middle setting when you need alerts but do not want audible interruptions. Alarm, ring and media volume have separate controls, so lowering one does not necessarily lower the others.
For meetings, set silent mode or DND before the meeting begins. For sleep, use a scheduled quiet period and verify whether phone synchronization is supported rather than assuming the phone’s schedule controls the watch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Keep high-use controls in the control center
Swipe to the watch control center for quick access to Raise to wake, silent mode, battery saver, DND, WLAN and Settings. These toggles are ideal for temporary changes: enable battery saver during a long day, turn on DND for a presentation, or disable Raise to wake in a dark room.
Quick controls do not replace phone permissions. Tapping a notification or Bluetooth toggle on the watch cannot grant Mi Fitness notification access, Background App Refresh or Android background execution; those still require the phone’s Settings app.

How much battery do these choices use?
Battery life is the organizing trade-off for the initial setup. Xiaomi’s figures are laboratory estimates, not independent testing, and actual results vary with settings, habits, signal conditions and environment.
| Usage scenario | Xiaomi’s reported result | What the test qualification means |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum-battery scenario | Up to 21 days | Reported by Xiaomi for the Watch S5 46mm; excludes AOD power use. |
| Typical usage | Up to 14 days | Xiaomi’s laboratory scenario includes specified notifications, monitoring, wake events, workouts, music and calls. |
| AOD usage | Up to 9 days | Xiaomi’s laboratory AOD scenario; real runtime varies. |
Xiaomi further says AOD can consume approximately 15%–20% of the battery within 24 hours, while heart-rate monitoring alone can consume approximately 15%–20% within 24 hours in Bluetooth mode. Those percentages are manufacturer FAQ figures under its own conditions, not a promise for every owner. Xiaomi also says enabling AOD can reduce the maximum estimate to about half.
Use the numbers to compare settings, not to predict an exact charging date. If your watch lasts much less than expected, first check whether AOD, continuous heart-rate, all-day stress, all-day SpO₂, advanced sleep monitoring, frequent workouts, WLAN or repeated screen wakes are enabled.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

If uninterrupted battery life matters most
- Allow notifications only for calls, messages and essential calendar or security apps.
- Keep AOD off and retain the 5-second auto-lock.
- Use Raise to wake only if you find it reliable.
- Enable health monitoring selectively, beginning with the one metric you review most.
- Use battery saver from the control center during travel or long days.
If glanceable information matters most
- Schedule AOD for active hours instead of leaving it on overnight.
- Use a moderate auto-lock interval so the screen does not remain lit after every check.
- Enable Wake screen when notified only for apps whose alerts need immediate attention.
- Accept that the AOD scenario is rated up to 9 days by Xiaomi, compared with up to 14 days for its typical scenario.
If health trends matter most
- Enable only the continuous heart-rate, stress, SpO₂ or advanced sleep functions you will review.
- Check battery status after several days of normal use before adding another sensor.
- After a low-battery shutdown or restart, verify that continuous features are still enabled.
Software, platform and regional checks
Xiaomi’s Spain specification page lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 14.0 or later compatibility for the Watch S5 46mm. It also identifies a regional product configuration with Xiaomi HyperOS 3 and Bluetooth 5.4. Availability of functions, labels and NFC can vary by region, and the global FAQ notes software prerequisites for some features. Check your local product page and installed versions rather than treating the Spain listing as universal.
Before relying on a setting, update Mi Fitness from the phone’s app store and install any offered watch firmware update. Re-pairing should be a last resort after permissions, background operation and software versions have been checked, because it can require restoring preferences.
A compact troubleshooting checklist
- No notifications: verify the app selection in Mi Fitness, phone notification permission, Mi Fitness background access and Bluetooth connection.
- iPhone notifications missing: enable Share System Notifications for the watch in Bluetooth settings, then allow Mi Fitness notifications and Background App Refresh.
- DND does not sync: confirm that the phone model, watch firmware and Mi Fitness version meet Xiaomi’s supported combination; otherwise use watch-side DND.
- Battery drops quickly: check AOD, continuous heart rate, all-day stress, all-day SpO₂, advanced sleep, Raise to wake and notification screen wake.
- A health option disappeared: charge and restart the watch, then inspect the setting again; Xiaomi says low battery can disable continuous monitoring.
- Screen stays lit too long: reduce auto-lock toward the 5-second default and disable Wake screen when notified for low-priority apps.
For model-specific menu differences, consult Xiaomi’s Xiaomi Watch S5 46mm FAQ. For compatibility and regional hardware details, see the Xiaomi Spain specifications page.
