Which Windows Update Storage Fix Should You Try First?

See how much space Windows updates typically need, how to clean up safely, and when an external drive can help.

If Windows says there isn’t enough storage to install an update, check your free space, then use Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations to remove only files you have reviewed. If that is not enough, Windows may offer an update workflow using an external drive—but it can still require free space on the PC’s internal drive.

How much free space does Windows need?

There is no single amount that guarantees every Windows update will install. Microsoft says feature updates typically need 6 GB–11 GB or more, while quality updates typically need 2 GB–3 GB or more. The actual amount depends on the update path and optional content installed on the PC. Windows may also need room for temporary files and rollback support, which is typically kept for 10 days. Microsoft’s storage guidance does not specify a universal target for every device.

Do not confuse those typical update ranges with Microsoft’s separate minimum free-space figures for an OS upgrade: 16 GB for a 32-bit OS and 20 GB for a 64-bit OS. Those upgrade figures are not requirements for every routine update. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance lists those figures in the OS-upgrade context.

Check available space before deleting anything

  1. Open File Explorer and select This PC to see the free space on the Windows drive, usually C:.
  2. Or open Settings > System > Storage to see how storage is being used.
  3. Note the free-space figure, then use one of the cleanup options below and check it again.

Free space with Windows cleanup tools

Windows’ built-in tools are the recommended first step. In Settings > System > Storage, open Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations, depending on the options shown on your Windows version. Review the listed categories and choose only items you are comfortable removing. Cleanup recommendations can include personal files, so do not select a category without checking what it contains.

#1 Best Overall

Microsoft advises taking the steps in order and checking whether enough space has been freed after each one. If the update still reports insufficient space, return to Storage and review another category rather than deleting files blindly. Microsoft’s storage instructions cover Storage Sense and cleanup options.

Can an external drive help install the update?

Yes, if Windows offers the external-storage option in its update flow. Microsoft documents using an external storage device with at least 10 GB free. A USB flash drive or other external USB storage device can serve this purpose; the guidance does not specify a particular model.

  1. Back up important files before starting.
  2. Connect the external drive and keep it connected during the update.
  3. If Windows Update displays Fix issues, select it and follow the on-screen steps to choose the external storage.
  4. After installation is complete, follow Microsoft’s instructions; the external device may then be removed.

External storage does not guarantee that Windows can avoid using the internal drive. Microsoft warns that if internal free space is still insufficient, Windows may prompt you to free more. Microsoft’s external-storage instructions explain this workflow.

Which option should you try?

Option Best fit Important limitation
Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations You can identify files or categories that are safe to remove. Review the suggestions first; deleting files does not guarantee a particular amount of recovered space.
External storage during the update Windows offers Fix issues and you have an external device with at least 10 GB free. The PC may still need additional free space on its internal drive.

If the update still will not install

Once you have freed space, run the Windows Update troubleshooter and use the specific error shown by Windows to guide the next step. A storage warning may be only one part of an update failure. For example, Microsoft lists insufficient disk space as one possible cause of error 0x800f0922 and includes freeing space among its troubleshooting steps; the same page also suggests disabling a VPN as a diagnostic step. Windows 10 support status

Storage cleanup can help resolve a low-space update error, but it does not change whether a Windows version is supported. Microsoft says standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Under its standard support terms, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice explains the change.
