Disable startup apps you recognize and do not need to open automatically—not every app marked “High impact.” In Windows 10 and 11, review the list in Task Manager, weigh each app’s impact against whether you rely on its syncing or notifications, and change only a few entries at a time. There is no universally safe list of app names, and Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements.
Which startup apps are good candidates to disable?
Start with enabled entries you can identify and do not need as soon as you sign in. An app may be a reasonable candidate if you are happy to open it yourself when needed and do not depend on its background activity.

- Consider disabling: a recognized app you use occasionally and do not need running or checking for updates immediately after sign-in.
- Think twice: an app you rely on for automatic file syncing, timely notifications, or immediate access.
- Do not guess: an unfamiliar name is not evidence that an entry is unnecessary. Find out what the app or publisher is before changing it.
Task Manager’s “Startup impact” label can help you prioritize, but it does not tell you whether you personally need an app or guarantee how much faster the PC will feel.
How to review and disable startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps and review enabled entries, their names, and their Startup impact.
- Select an app you recognize and do not need at sign-in, then choose Disable. Begin with one or a few low-risk apps so you can tell what changed.
- Restart the PC. Notice whether startup or sign-in feels better and whether a feature you use has stopped working.
- If you miss a feature or discover an app is needed, return to Startup apps, select the entry, and choose Enable.
You can also use Start > Settings > Apps > Startup and switch an app off. Microsoft notes that Task Manager provides more detail about startup impact.

What Task Manager’s impact labels mean
Microsoft defines the labels using an app’s total CPU and disk usage during startup. These are categories for startup activity, not promises of a particular improvement in everyday speed.
| Label | Microsoft’s definition | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| None | The startup app is disabled. | It is not an enabled startup entry. |
| Not measured | The app is enabled, but there is no measurement data. | Do not treat the missing measurement as proof of low impact. |
| Low impact | Total CPU usage is under 300 milliseconds and total disk usage is under 292 kilobytes. | Use your need for the app, rather than the label alone, to decide. |
| Medium impact | Total CPU usage is under one second but above 300 milliseconds, or total disk usage is under 3 megabytes but above 292 kilobytes. | Consider whether its automatic launch or background behavior matters to you. |
| High impact | Total CPU usage exceeds one second or disk usage exceeds 3 megabytes. | Review it early, but disable it only if you recognize it and do not need it at sign-in. |
These thresholds are Microsoft’s criteria for the Task Manager labels; they are not measurements of the speed gain you will get by disabling an entry. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance warns that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvement from performance steps.

Why some apps should keep running
Disabling an app’s startup entry prevents it from launching automatically; it does not necessarily remove the app. The trade-off is convenience and background activity: some apps sync files or deliver notifications. If those functions matter, leave the app enabled or open it manually when you need it. Microsoft’s guidance on Windows background apps and privacy explains that background activity can support app functions.

What to do if a startup problem needs troubleshooting
A clean boot is a diagnostic method for isolating problems, not a routine way to speed up a PC. Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions include hiding Microsoft services before disabling other services, then disabling enabled startup items in Task Manager. Some functionality may temporarily be lost.
Keep a record of what you disable during troubleshooting. When the test is finished, follow Microsoft’s restoration steps to return to normal startup, enable services, and re-enable the startup programs you turned off.

Windows 10 support is a separate issue
Startup-app management is available in Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance, but disabling startup apps does not change an operating system’s support status. Microsoft’s Windows startup settings page states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, and recommends moving to Windows 11.
