Which Windows Settings Should You Change on a New Surface Laptop?

Start with Windows and Surface updates, then check the battery, power, display and backup options that matter for how you use your new Surface Laptop.

On a new Surface Laptop, install Windows and Surface updates first, then review battery recommendations, app usage, power mode, adaptive display behavior, smart charging and backup restore. Most are options to check—not settings everyone needs to change.

1. Install Windows, driver and firmware updates

Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Microsoft recommends automatic updates for most users. Keep the laptop connected to power and make sure its battery is at least 40% before installing Surface updates. After the main updates finish, check for optional updates and install those that name Surface drivers.

Windows 11, version 25H2, is rolling out in phases, so a device may not be offered the update immediately. The Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available toggle opts in to earlier non-security updates; it is optional. See Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance and Surface driver and firmware instructions.

2. Review battery recommendations and app use

Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations. Review the suggestions and open Battery usage to see which apps are using power. If an app is consuming battery when you do not need it, close it or disable it from starting automatically. Apply recommendations that fit your habits rather than changing every option blindly. Menu availability can vary by Surface model and Windows version. Microsoft’s Windows battery guidance explains the related controls.

3. Pick a power mode for the way you work

Use Recommended as a balanced starting point. A higher-performance mode may help with demanding work, but can also increase warmth and fan speed. You can choose a mode separately for plugged-in and battery use in Settings > System > Power & battery. Surface fans may run more during the first 24 hours as Windows completes background updates and syncing; that initial activity is not, by itself, proof of a problem. Microsoft’s Surface power and performance guidance covers the settings.

4. Keep adaptive brightness on unless it disrupts your work

On supported Surface models, Windows can adjust brightness and contrast in response to displayed content. Microsoft says this behavior can save power and extend battery life. Leave it enabled if the changes are unobtrusive; turn it off if brightness or contrast shifts interfere with your work, with the understanding that battery runtime may decrease.

5. Leave smart charging enabled

Smart charging helps protect battery health. When the Surface detects conditions such as extended plugged-in use or elevated temperature, it may temporarily limit charging to 80%; it can also pause the limit to allow a full charge based on usage. An 80% stopping point under those conditions is expected behavior, not necessarily a fault. Microsoft advises against disabling smart charging. Details are in Microsoft’s smart charging guidance.

6. Restore a Windows backup if you have one

If you backed up another Windows device, sign in during setup with the Microsoft account associated with that backup and choose it when prompted. Depending on the backup, Windows may restore files, settings, apps and Wi-Fi information. This step is only relevant if a backup exists. See Microsoft’s Windows Backup and restore instructions.
