Most Windows applications run on Snapdragon laptops when they are built for Arm64 or can run as x86/x64 programs through Windows 11’s Prism emulation. Native Arm64 software usually gives the best speed, responsiveness and battery life. Emulation covers a large range of ordinary desktop software, but it cannot translate drivers, and games can still fail because of anti-cheat, graphics APIs, launchers or device-specific performance.
Compatibility therefore depends on the exact application or game, its plug-ins and drivers, your Windows version, graphics driver and Snapdragon model. Use the checks below before replacing a working PC or buying a laptop for a particular title.

How Windows runs apps on a Snapdragon laptop
Snapdragon laptops use Arm processors, while much traditional Windows software was compiled for Intel or AMD x86 processors. Windows 11 on Arm handles both situations: Arm64 programs run natively, and many unmodified x86 and x64 programs run through an integrated translation layer called Prism.
Native Arm64 applications
An Arm64 build is compiled for the processor in the laptop. Microsoft identifies native versions as the preferred choice because they improve performance, responsiveness and battery life compared with an emulated build. Native software is also the safest option for demanding work, long-running background tasks and applications that rely on plug-ins or hardware integration.

Microsoft’s current examples of native Arm experiences include Microsoft 365 applications such as Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive and OneNote, along with Chrome, Spotify, Zoom, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite and DaVinci Resolve. These examples show that mainstream productivity, communication, creative and media tools are available, but each vendor’s current build, plug-ins and peripheral requirements still need checking.
x86 and x64 programs through Prism
Prism translates x86 and x64 instruction blocks into Arm64 code while the program runs and caches translated code for later use. It is part of Windows 11; you do not install a separate emulator. Windows 11 24H2 includes Prism, and newer Prism versions add support for emulated CPU features such as AVX and AVX2, which some applications and games require.
Windows 10 on Arm can emulate x86 software but does not provide x64 emulation. If a program is available only as x64, Windows 11 is the relevant compatibility target.
| Software type | How it runs | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Arm64 application | Native execution | Generally the best performance, responsiveness and battery efficiency |
| x86 application | Prism emulation on Windows 11 | Often usable; overhead and application-specific limitations may apply |
| x64 application | Prism emulation on Windows 11 24H2 and later | Broad support, but verify CPU features, plug-ins and performance |
| x64 application on Windows 10 Arm | Not supported by the operating system’s emulation layer | Use a native Arm64 build, Windows 11, or another computer |
| Kernel, device or print driver | No emulation | Must have an Arm64 driver |
Why an ordinary Windows app can still fail
The main executable is only one part of a Windows application. Emulation covers user-mode code, not every component that software may install or load.
Drivers are the hard boundary
Windows does not emulate kernel-mode drivers, user-mode drivers or print drivers. Any required driver must be compiled for Arm64. Microsoft’s documentation states: “Emulation only supports user mode code and doesn’t support drivers. Any kernel mode components must be compiled as Arm64.”
This affects printers, scanners, specialist input devices, security tools, storage utilities, audio interfaces and other hardware. An application may open normally while a feature that needs its driver is missing. Check the device manufacturer’s Windows on Arm or Arm64 driver before buying the laptop.

Shell extensions and injected components
Some software inserts DLLs into Windows processes or adds extensions to File Explorer and other system components. Examples include certain Explorer extensions and assistive tools. These components may need an Arm64 build even when the main application can run under emulation.

Microsoft reports that x86 applications using DirectX 9, 10, 11 or 12 work on Arm. Applications that require OpenGL later than version 1.1, or hardware-accelerated OpenGL, may not work as expected. Read the application’s own graphics requirements rather than assuming that a successful installation means full functionality.
Unusual runtime assumptions
Microsoft documents possible problems in applications that prohibit dynamic code generation or assume an emulated x86 process is running on an x64 host. These cases are less obvious than a missing driver, so an application’s support notes and recent user reports can be important when no native build exists.
Performance is part of compatibility
An emulated office utility may feel fine while a compiler, virtual machine, video workflow or other compute-heavy program exposes translation overhead. Graphics-heavy workloads can also be limited by the laptop’s integrated GPU, memory configuration or cooling. “Runs” should therefore mean that the complete task is usable at the speed and battery life you need, not merely that the window opens.
Which everyday apps are usually a good fit?
Native Arm64 versions are the strongest choices for office, browser, messaging and media work. The examples below are identified by Microsoft as native Arm experiences; availability of a particular plug-in, extension or enterprise add-on can differ.

Gaming: why support is title-specific
A game can launch under CPU emulation and still be unplayable or unable to start. A complete game installation may include a graphics engine, launcher, redistributables, an anti-cheat service and sometimes a kernel driver. Every one of those pieces must work on Windows on Arm.
Graphics and frame-rate limits
DirectX 9 through 12 support gives many x86 games a workable graphics path. OpenGL requirements above 1.1 or hardware-accelerated OpenGL dependencies can cause problems. Even when the API is supported, the Snapdragon laptop’s GPU performance, resolution, quality settings and thermal limits determine the frame rate.
Anti-cheat and low-level services
Anti-cheat support is decided at the game and service level. A title using an anti-cheat product that works elsewhere on Arm is not automatically compatible with every other title using that product. The game publisher may need to provide an Arm64-compatible service or driver.

Qualcomm announced Fortnite support on Snapdragon X Series with Easy Anti-Cheat and described work with providers including Tencent ACE, Roblox Hyperion, Denuvo, InProtect GameGuard, BattlEye and Uncheater. This shows that support is expanding, not that every game using one of those services is guaranteed to run.
Validated game figures, with their limits
Microsoft and Qualcomm reported nearly 1,400 jointly validated games in 2024. More than 1,200 of those were reported to offer a good experience at 30 frames per second or higher at 1080p. This is a dated validation snapshot, not a promise for every Snapdragon laptop, Windows build, driver or later game update.
Xbox PC app and Game Pass on Arm laptops
Microsoft announced an Xbox PC app for Arm-based Windows 11 PCs in January 2026. In that announcement, Microsoft said more than 85% of the Game Pass catalog was compatible with these PCs. The percentage describes a catalog snapshot at that time. It does not mean that every listed game installs locally, performs well, supports every Snapdragon model or remains compatible after updates.

- Find the publisher’s architecture information. Look for an Arm64 or Windows on Arm release and confirm the supported Windows edition and build. If only x86 or x64 is offered, note that the program will rely on Prism under Windows 11.
- List every dependency. Check for kernel or user-mode drivers, print drivers, Explorer or shell extensions, plug-ins, launchers, virtualization components and hardware security keys. The dependency, rather than the main executable, is often the blocker.
- Confirm graphics requirements. Record whether the software requires DirectX, OpenGL or another graphics path. DirectX 9–12 x86 applications are supported on Arm; OpenGL later than 1.1 or hardware-accelerated OpenGL can cause compatibility problems.
- For games, check the publisher first. Verify the current game version, launcher and anti-cheat status. A CPU-emulated executable does not prove that the anti-cheat service or graphics stack will work.
- Search the WorksOnWoA catalog. Microsoft Support recommends WorksOnWoA as an evolving, third-party open-source compatibility resource. Microsoft’s August 2026 developer blog said the catalog contained more than 7,000 verified apps and games and used Microsoft compatibility data. Treat an entry as a starting point, then match it to your exact Snapdragon model, Windows build and driver.
- Check the current Xbox catalog for Game Pass titles. Confirm local installation and Arm support for the individual game instead of relying on the January 2026 catalog percentage.
- Record versions when you test. Note the Windows build, graphics-driver date, application version and game version. Prism behavior, drivers, launchers and anti-cheat integrations change over time.
What to do when an app will not launch
Install all current updates
Update Windows 11, the laptop’s graphics and chipset drivers, the application, its launcher and any redistributable packages. Prism improvements and compatibility fixes are delivered through Windows and software updates.
Try the application compatibility settings
Windows 11 24H2 Prism supports additional emulated CPU features, including AVX and AVX2. Windows provides app-specific compatibility controls that can hide newer CPU features or change synchronization behavior when a program has problems. These settings can reduce performance and may cause a crash or prevent launch, so change one setting at a time and restore the default if it makes the problem worse.
Separate an application problem from a driver problem
If the program opens but a printer, scanner, audio interface, security feature or other device is unavailable, look for an Arm64 driver rather than reinstalling the application repeatedly. If no Arm64 driver exists, emulation cannot supply one.
Check the game’s anti-cheat and graphics path
For games, identify whether the failure occurs in the launcher, anti-cheat initialization or graphics startup. The publisher’s support page is the authority for whether that exact title and version support Windows on Arm. A different game using the same anti-cheat technology is not evidence of compatibility.

Native Arm64 versus emulated x86/x64: choosing between versions
| Decision factor | Native Arm64 | Emulated x86/x64 |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Requires an Arm64 release and Arm64-compatible dependencies | Often runs without a port, but drivers and certain extensions still need Arm64 support |
| Responsiveness | Usually the better choice | Can be sufficient for ordinary workloads; overhead varies by application |
| Battery life | Microsoft recommends it for optimized battery use | May use more power, especially during sustained work |
| Games | Still depends on graphics and anti-cheat support | CPU translation does not solve graphics, launcher or anti-cheat blockers |
| Maintenance | Check Arm64 plug-ins and drivers | Check Prism version, emulated CPU features and application-specific settings |
The practical answer
Choose a Snapdragon laptop with confidence for mainstream Windows 11 productivity, browsing, communication and many creative applications when native Arm64 versions are available. Older x86 software often works through Prism, and Windows 11 24H2’s x64 emulation is substantially broader than Windows 10 on Arm.
Be cautious if your workflow depends on proprietary hardware, print or kernel drivers, Explorer extensions, OpenGL beyond 1.1, virtualization or a particular competitive game. For those cases, verify the exact application or title, its dependencies, the laptop model, Windows build and current driver before purchase. Compatibility catalogs and Microsoft’s published figures are useful guides, but they are dated snapshots rather than permanent guarantees.
