First check which app you are opening: OpenAI says the Codex app updates into the new ChatGPT desktop app, while the previous ChatGPT app may remain installed as ChatGPT Classic. Then try the Windows app’s documented reset option; use blank-screen or frozen-page steps only when they fit what you see.
First identify the app that updated
OpenAI says the Codex app updates into the new ChatGPT desktop app, which includes Chat, Work, and Codex. The older ChatGPT desktop app may remain installed as ChatGPT Classic. That can make the app name or shortcut look different after an update, but it does not establish why a particular installation shows no window. See OpenAI’s migration guidance.

OpenAI’s July 16, 2026 release notes say Codex remains a separate view, with its workflows and history unchanged as part of the desktop experience update. A changed app label therefore does not, by itself, mean Codex was removed. The note is about the product experience, not a diagnosis of a missing Windows window. See ChatGPT release notes.

OpenAI’s Windows app guide lists Windows 10 x64 or ARM64, version 17763.0 or higher, as the system requirement. Check your Windows version if you are unsure whether the computer meets it. This requirement is a compatibility check, not proof that an unsupported Windows version caused the missing window. OpenAI’s current requirement is in Using the ChatGPT Windows app.

Reset the ChatGPT Windows app
OpenAI documents a reset option in Windows Settings. Follow this path:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed Apps.
- Find ChatGPT and open its three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced Options, then Reset.
This is OpenAI’s documented reset procedure for the Windows app, not a guaranteed fix for every case where no window appears. If the reset option is unavailable or the app still does not show, note that result for support rather than assuming the cause.

Choose blank-screen steps only if they match the symptom
OpenAI’s general guidance for blank, frozen, or endlessly loading experiences includes reloading, signing out and back in, clearing site data, disabling extensions or content blockers, and testing another browser profile, browser, network, or device. These suggestions are most relevant when a page or app interface is visible but blank, stuck, or failing to load.
- If a window opens but its content is blank or frozen: try reloading or force reloading, then sign out and sign back in.
- If the issue looks tied to a web session: clear site data, disable extensions or content blockers, or test another browser profile.
- If practical: try a different browser, network, or device to help determine whether the problem follows the account, network, or computer.
- If no desktop window appears at all: browser-focused steps such as clearing site data or disabling extensions may not apply, especially if the desktop process never displays a window.
OpenAI presents these as general troubleshooting steps, not as confirmed fixes for a post-update Windows desktop launch failure. See its troubleshooting and support guidance.

For Codex issues, distinguish the desktop app from the CLI
For a problem specifically affecting Codex, consult OpenAI’s Codex troubleshooting guide. OpenAI also describes Codex Doctor as a Windows command-line diagnostic for startup, connectivity, and performance. It can provide information about CLI issues; it is not documented as a repair tool for a graphical desktop app that has no visible window. Details are on the Codex plan page.

- Which app or shortcut you opened, and whether it was labeled ChatGPT, ChatGPT Classic, or Codex.
- The app version, if available, and your Windows version.
- When the update and missing-window behavior began, plus the steps you tried and their results.
- Any visible error message or diagnostic output, including Codex Doctor output if the affected component is the CLI.
For persistent browser issues, OpenAI’s guidance mentions browser console logs and a HAR file. Those are browser diagnostics; do not assume they are available or relevant when the desktop app never opened a window.
